ATV Seat Repair, ATV Seat Cover, or Reupholster

Recommended Posts

Over this winter I started to get some cracks in my ATV seat cover on my Yamaha Grizzly and they got progressively worse. One crack ran across and more cracks at started to form.  For the time being, I bought some wide black duct tape as a temporary repair. I’m thinking or a few seat covers but and alps thinking of reupholstering the seat. Any thoughts? I guess my quad is officially old now being a 2004 and to be expected...

I used 3M Super Tough Heavy Duty All Weather Extra Wide Black Rubberized Duct Tape 2.83-in from Lowes.

I'm leaning towards this seat cover on ebay which I can just use my pneumatic stapler with.

I was also looking at this Kolpin Gel-Tech Black Seat Cover on Amazon

Looks Like I can get a new one on Partzillla for $100

I have recovered a lot of seats, but not one with that many compound curves.  If the cover is a formed cover I'd just recover it.  If it's flat material though, it's going to have a lot of wrinkles.  The picture seems to be a formed cover though....

The last 300 seat I recovered had several holes in the foam.  I ended up filling them with spray foam and then shaving it to form with a cheese grater type of file.  Worked really decent.

My seat was pretty bad. I bought the Kolpin Gel-tech seat cover and wasn't quite fully satisfied with it. So I got some spray contact glue and glued it down (so I didn't need the straps that normally hold it down). Then I bought some outdoor/marine grade vinyl and stretched it around and stapled it to the underside of the seat frame (my seat frame is plastic). I used a air stapler. Made it a pretty easy job with a second person to staple while I stretched and held it.

I've got a couple of pockmarks in the seat of my 92 Bayou. I'm wondering if it's necessary to tape them to keep the damage from spreading?

100% yes, I do boat upholstery for a living and I've rehabbed a few wheeler and motorcycle seats - if you leave the foam exposed to UV for much more than a week or two it will start to degrade and get progressively worse til you have deep valleys or pock holes. cover with tape until you can buy a yard worth of 4-way stretch vinyl. This site https://www.marinevinylfabric.com/products/36x54-marine-vinyl?variant=39463706361940 has really good pricing for vinyl and a sale on right now where you can get single yards of 4-way for $16, enough to do 2 seats probably. 4-way stretch makes it MUCH easier to cover those compound curves without having to sew in gussets, but it will also show imperfections in the foam beneath more readily. If a seat's foam is really bumpy, a layer of sew foam (scrim backed foam) or headliner material will help give it a smoother appearance. If there are deep valleys or chunks missing, you can either fill in with similar foam, by gluing it in with contact cement, or you can shave out surrounding foam and make a lower seat profile by using an electric turkey knife.  You can pick up a decent air stapler from Harbor Freight for about $30, I use the 20 gauge one with 3/8" staples for most seats, 1/2" if its a super thick spot. Hope it helps and happy to answer any questions.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

What's the best kids atv out there? I've seen everything from the ones released by the major manufacturers to all those knock offs. Kawasaki has a KFX 50 that is pretty nice for under $1800...

Anyone purchase or check out Rockymtnatv lately? Well I was just browsing over there and they have a pretty cool section called Ten Dollars Or Less. Some interesting things to check out if you are in the market.

The stock driver seat cushion is separated at a seam. I took the seat apart and found that the material has torn and cannot be re-stiched. I'm trying to find a replacement seat. Any suggestions? Hoping for a used seat but couldn't find one on Ebay.

      Hey I have a 1997 big bear 350 4x4
I replaced the shifter shaft and the shift arm linkage and the rod when I installed them all I was unaware that you had to line the dot on the shifter shaft with the gap on the linkage arm gap put it all back  together and rode it I can't get it to shift in the right gears  I can move the shift cam by hand and goes in different gears but with the shifter shaft in it riding I can't put it in R or N
Anyone know how to line up the shifter shaft and the shift cam s
