Well that smoke when it starts could be the cause. Oil, even clean oil, burns black.

But, since it runs bad after an hour, it probably means you need to adjust the idle mixture. The idle mixture might need adjusting because there are other problems in the carby, which may need attention, but you should try adjusting it first to hopefully cure the black sparkplug, and also to check that the idle does adjust as it should. If the idle doesn't adjust properly it's a sign of carby problems.

When you adjust the idle mixture, you should do it at as lower idle speed as possible, then adjust the speed and mixture in turns getting the idle speed as low as possible, with the mixture set half way between the point where it starts to slow because it's getting too rich, and the point where it starts to slow because it's getting too lean.. The thing to take note of, which indicates other work being needed, is how far you turn the idle mixture screw before the speed starts to drop. If the carby is all good the idle mixture screw should not need turning more than about a half a turn between too rich and too lean.

I'd adjust the idle, and then see whether the spark plug starts to clean itself after a few hours use. .

The smoke at start up, especially if its been sitting for a while, is oil leaking past the valve guide seals and getting into combustion chamber, very common on older engines. If your black plug is shiny its oil burning, if it flat black its too rich. Strange that it runs and idles fine for an hr, is seems like something is heating up. When it cools will it idle again. You might check your choke cable to make sure its not sticking and is doing what its supposed to do. Mech gave the correct procedure for adjusting carb I would start there . The only thing I might add is change the plug, iv had plugs not fire as well when they get hot, drove me nuts trying to find that.

Yup, good point Gw.. the shinny or matt black is an indicator of whether it's oil or fuel burning..

The spark plug, yeah I thought of suggesting changing it but they hadn't mentioned misfiring.. but a different heat range would perhaps keep the plug cleaner.. You could check what heat range the plug is meant to be Sandy..  It will be in the manual or a bike shop will tell you.. or anyone that sells spark plugs really..  And, I'd suggest you buy an NGK plug.. they seem to last longer than any other make in japanese bikes

It would probably be a good idea to check the aircleaner isn't dirty, or over oiled, and it might pay to check the valve clearances too. If they are too tight they might be preventing a valve from fully closing once it gets really hot.

My 1992 TRX00 recently stopped firing.  I understand this is a common problem. I have ordered an aftermarket CDI unit.    TJ

Hey all, new to the forum! I just bought a 1998 Kawasaki bayou 300, 4x4 not running. Initially I found no spark. Ended up playing with the plug wire (made sure plug top and wiring was touching) and got spark yesterday and the quad fired up off ether. Come to work on it today and now no spark again. Before I got spark and now today if I touch the plug after cranking I get shocked, and it will spark after I release the starter button. I was jumping the quad with a freshly charged car battery that has 12v while cranking. Cleaned out the kill switch and ignition button. All looks good. Purchased new plugs. They're are a lot of wires cut/ disconnected. But shouldn't matter if I got spark without them connected...

HI everyone. New to this forum. I have 98 Kawasaki Bayou 400 with an apparent electrical issue. I have the Clymer manual, but I am not exactly sure where to start. The issue started a month ago and the neutral light would go on and off intermittently. Eventually it went completely off , and I thought it was a shifting issue. I took the case off and checked the clutch and all mechanical shifting components are good, so I think I eliminated that. The switch sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Last time I tried, I did hear a clicking sound near where the battery is right before the light went out. Does anyone have any ideas where to start? Hoping this is an easy fix.

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.
