2008 Kawasaki Prairie 360 4x4 that won’t rev

Hello all, I have a Kawasaki that will idle perfect but won’t go over 10 mph.

Reset limp mode, checked belt sensor, it will go into 4 wheel drive but won’t rev up more than 2500 rpm’s. I have no lights blinking.

Ran perfect for months until I let it idle while cutting limbs on the trails.
Had a new carb, air filter and gas, just won’t rev up.
Assistance would be appreciated..

tks

Might pay to try a new spark plug before spending too much more money.

And can you describe what it actually does when it won't go over 2500.. does it start killing and then restarting the engine, or does it slowly fade out of power, does opening the throttle faster or slower, or more or less make any difference, does it do it in neutral or only in gears and under a load ?

And if you download a service manual and have a look it will tell you how to check for trouble codes.. They are something you should check for.

It sounds kind of like a fuel restriction, but because of your description of how it happened, im not sure, it didn't get too hot while idling did it, they are air cooled an need a good amount of air flow to keep cool, but if it just happened its not that hot so maybe not. You could replace the plug like Mech suggested and maybe check for proper fuel flow, and maybe do a compression test, while you have the plug out. Just grabbing at straws here, more information as to how it runs would be helpful.

I just reread and if it has a carb then it won't have trouble codes.. disregard that.

If it's got a carb though then I don't think it's going to have any limp mode either..  Can you explain what you meant by resetting the limp mode please.

And, I just read in here that some kawasaki limit the revs if the park brake is engaged, which it will do by reading the brake light voltage..  Might pay to check the park brake switch and operation.

I thought it was the carb needle not completely engaging (up and down) but i was wrong,  checking the spark arrestor to see if its clogged, its a 2008 never been cleaned.  Gonna check the valves, air box filter which is new, checking the coil also...it idles perfect, but when i put it in gear won't go over 10 mph, will rev to 2200 rpms not any higher in neutral. doesnt miss or shudder.

I tested the belt switch with voltmeter, on ohms across switch I get no change when move the switch on and off. Could this be the problem?

Checked the fuel flow and its ok..

I cleaned the belt switch with Electromotive Cleaner and still no change, get no reading with an ohm meter when I move the switch... I can't find a switch without buying the complete clutch cover. so can I jump the switch to see if that's the problem, would that affect anything if I jump the switch?  Thank you for all your assistance.

So if you put it straight into second gear.  would it go faster or start struggling even earlier ?

It’s automatic, belt driven, goes same speed no matter what I do, even adding some choke. But the belt switch doesn’t work, using an ohm meter no reading on or off… so it must be in constant limp mode?

Yes,I believe that will do the trick.

BELT SWITCH BYPASS KIT

    • All Brute Force, Prairie and Twin Peaks 700
  • Description
    • The Belt Switch (AKA CVT Switch, Belt Sensor, etc.) is a common failure point on your ATV that causes you to go into limp mode.  Kawasaki is the only manufacturer of this switch design.  Other ATV  manufacturers do have a belt switch because they believe it to be unnecessary (and so do we).  Install our Belt Switch Bypass Kit to ride worry free

Thank you all for the replies and info.

I removed the breather hose and moved the diaphragm in the carb with my finger. The diaphragm would only move up about 3/4 of the way.  The spring had kinked at the top where it sets in the top cover. Which wouldn't allow for full throttle.  I removed the cover and repositioned the spring, this allowed the diaphragm to move up its full span.  I also changed the plug and adjusted the valves as suggested.  You guys are awesome. The machine runs like new.   Thank you

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

having an issue with the unit when running under a load up a hill or in high gear, seems like the belt is slipping, there is a clapping sound coming from the primary clutch like it releases and snaps back in. i don't think I should have a noise like that. this is a friends unit and he has already replaced the primary twice with the same result.
not sure where to look next

Hello, im looking for some input on this situation i have. My 94 Mojave has no spark, and i have no idea what it is. Ive replaced/tested the magneto, the pickup coil, cdi, the ignition coil. Even the key and Killswitch. I haven't tested the harness its self, but i have tried another harness and still nothing. The only thing i can think of is the fly wheel itself. I have found a lot of metal shavings in the fly wheel and have cleaned it the best I could. But nothing happened afterwards. I am truly stumped here and hoping some of yous could shed some knowledge/ideas that could help get this thing to fire.

Hi guys. I have a problem where the quad will start and run well for about 5 minutes and then it dies. On inspection the airbox has oil in it (quite a lot). The oil is pumping through the cylinder head breather hose. This problem first happened suddenly. I have since done the top end including, piston, gaskets, rings and valves. I have also done the carb (not that I thought that this was the problem). The compression seems normal. The only thing that I can think of, is that I did not grind the valves well enough. Anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? Any other thoughts?
