Legal Issues

Hello,

I'm in NJ, so not the same state, but I believe our laws are similar.  I believe the best way to get the information you want is always to go directly to the source. If you check out Google and search new york state atv laws, the top results should show the result ATVs: Information for Owners and Operators - New York DMV on the official NY DMV government website. That looks like it details pretty much everything you will need to know.

It does mention that ATVs are not allowed on public land unless otherwise noted by posted signs. This is a step up from NJ. In NJ, they just don't even consider allowing it in any capacity. I'd recommend looking over that site to get all your official answers.

Hopefully someone on the forum in NY state can chime in with a more "boots on the ground" perspective.

Hope this helps a bit.

I feel bad for some of you folks with those laws . Where I live most people own an atv and use them on a daily basis . The laws are much different, most people don’t even have theirs registered or insured (especially a lot of older or second hand bikes )

You must live in America! I'm jealous.

Same here, yes US, in fact i was going to register mine even thought it was 23 years old, and DMV seemed surprised i wanted to do that and told me even if you register it still not legal to ride on a public road.

Just aquired this Honda 4514. I had heard of them and seen them but had never really looked at one. Amazing machine from the 90s.
It has a 14 HP inline 2 cylinder engine. A cute little fan like the old school cars had and a little radiator. It has a timing belt on the back of the engine running the cam and a water pump. Just like a miniature car engine with  electronic clutches to turn blades on and off. Pretty hight tech for the 90s not a small thing and built like a tank weighs in at 600 pds hydrostatic trans. I have found out that almost anything you have to do to it the engine has to come out starter timing belt water pump. Very expensive parts i think most got junked for that reason, i did find out they were built by John Deere except for the honda engine.
Does anyone here have any expierience with these.

Hey all, just posting to introduce and get ball rolling on the required number of posts to download a freakin manual. Recently picked up an 86 LT230S for $800, runs OK and kids having some fun on it so far, but it needs some work. I did an oil and filter change, other than a rough idle it's not bad, ordered some new front tires as those are thrashed, and getting left rear looked at as it has a slow leak and was somehow mounted backwards! Not sure how that happens and nobody noticed. Anyway, yeah sure I'll be posting more specific questions as I get into it, hope to just have it solid enough for kids to rip around at grandpas.

What are your riding location preferences? Mud Park? Personal Trails? Public Land?
