2000 Rancher 350 ES 4x4

O.K. here's the story.I pulled the motor out so I could fix why the bike wouldn't shift gears. After pulling the motor I removed the clutch cover and looking over all of the parts that were used to make it shift.I found the culprit and replaced it with a spare that I had from a parts engine. In order to remove it I had to slide the clutch basket forward a little, removed and replaced the bad part then slid the clutch back and finished assembling the engine. Before I put it back on the frame I checked it to make sure it shifted and it did with no problems.I put the motor back on the frame and I hooked up the wiring and exhaust pretty much just the bare minimum of what it would take just to start it and test it.(None of the front wheel drive was hooked up if it matters or not and the front and rear of bike are completely off the ground).

And now finally here is my problem. When I start the bike the es shifts just fine,BUT the tires do not turn in forward or reverse. When I shift either direction I know it is going into gear cause as soon as I shift you can see the tires turn just a little, but when I give it gas they don't turn at all.I can spin the tires with my hand and they turn freely and I know when it is in gear cause I can watch the output shaft on the front wheel drive turn as I spin the back tires. Is there another internal problem with the engine or is it my clutch. The reason I believe it may be my clutch is because I messed with the adjustment on the clutch cover before removing it(thinking it was something that needed to be removed in order to remove the cover)and I'm not quite sure how to set it the way it should be set.Anybodies help would be greatly appreciated I'm just a poor white boy that can't afford a mechanic's rate so gotta do it myself.Sorry for writing a whole book here, but I just wanted to give the most info.as possible for an accurate diagnosis.Thank-You for your time.

* I changed your thread title to get you better responses from searches.

That Honda transmission is a bit different and is not belt driven from what I remember. I think there are clucth packs in there though. It sounds like it's just not engaging the final drive.

Definately sounds like the clutch is the problem, it sounds like you loosened something too much, you could try tightening whatever adjustment you messed with to start with. I would definately suggest buying a manual, it will have info on how to properly adjust the clutch.

Someone from another forum sent me directions on adjusting the clutch.Didn't work.I guess I'm just gonna have to back track, but this time I think I'm gonna just leave the motor where it sits and just pull off the clutch cover and take a peek inside hopefully it is something obvious. Thanks

what does your dash tell you when you shift it electrically? do you get the gear number or just " - -" if so, it is prob the shift angle sensor. it screws into the back of the case just above the swingarm. It is a common problem on Hondoos.... the computer doesnt know what gear it is in so it defaults to neutral.

Not saying this could be the only problem, but it is a common failure part on the ES quads.

good luck. prob should buy a book.

Yeah I've heard tons of problems that involved the angle sensor being the problem, but when I shift it the screen does display the gear number it is in rather than "--"plus when I try to manually shift it will shift gears ,but when I give it gas it just won't move.Keep in mind that it is on jack stands and when I do shift it in forward or reverse the tires do turn for just a second to let me know it is shifting but just not holding. As for getting the book for it.........Well I guess I'm a little hard headed when it comes to reason and a book would make it to easy.LOL Besides that is why they have forums.LOL I'll give it a little longer before I break down and listen to reason and get the book. Thanks for your input ,but I think the angle sensor is ruled out.I'm totally open for anymore suggestions.

I have a 2009 Honda Rancher TRX420FA with shifting problems.
Usually it shifts ok when cold but after couple minutes it will stop shifting with no codes.
The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in first gear is 74psi. The 2nd shift clutch oil pressure when in second gear is 74psi.
The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in neutral is zero. The problem is when the tranny is in neutral the 2nd shift clutch pressure starts around 10-15psi and builds to 20psi. Is this normal?

Hi everyone and thanks for reading.
My husband and me are getting ready to host the 2nd Quad Runners event at our nudist campground. The first one (last year) went pretty well with about 20 quads attending and have to say, it was a smaller group, but they made up for their size with the large interest in partying and there was plenty of nudity as the Saturday night went on.
We have decided to host another one this summer, but we are looking for some fun (but safe) riding events. Our grounds are almost all flat and remember we are a nudist campground so many of us are bare as* naked so "slow ride" events would be the best.
Give us your thoughts and ideas and feel free to ask us anything you would like, and we will answer right here in the thread.
Thanks for your help and ride safe.
BTW, let us know what "anything goes" means for this thread section.

      Hi all,

I am wondering if any of you have a Clutch Starter gear from a 1988 era quadrunner 250 sitting around that you could get me a precise measurement of the outer diameter of the race the sprag engages onto, for me? I need to machine a damaged race down and install a hardened sleeve and need that measurement (it's on a different gear than the OEM one, so I can't buy and use a OEM gear).

Hi guys, I was given a 2000 Honda Recon fourtrax 250 (I think that's the full name lol). The previous owner had it sitting for a while before I got it. It sat for another few years in my ownership. I got it up and going on its first test drive today!! I was wondering where everyone buys their parts from?  Coming from the car community, we have sites like RockAuto and many more. Anything like that for quads? Also would like to be pointed in a direction, if possible, for plastics. I am missing a few and would like to have it complete. I appreciate any input!

I have (2) sets of brand new plastics available for Honda Rancher 420 2014-2023. These are genuine genuine OEM Honda plastics. One set is white and the other set is green. The boxes these are in are too big to ship.(Unless you want to pay for it. If so, lookup your own shipping rates from 17325 and box size is 58"x35"x18").  $400
