Hi, I'm curious how in the heck do you properly check the oil level in a trx 400 ex?

Every time I pull out the dipstick it gives different readings. When I first go for a ride to warm it up I check the oil level and it only has a drop on the stick, the second it reads over full, the third its in the center of the stick.

I know the difference is probably due to the oil pump pushing oil into the engine at different intervals.

With it doing this I have no idea if I need to add some oil or not.

Thanks

yes, I do have the motor off. the problem is every time I check the oil it has a different reading. even directly after changing the oil. last time I changed the oil it did the opposite said full then said empty then was overfull then normal, then back to empty then full, it's really aggravating not knowing how much oil is actually in there. is this normal on these machines or is mine having some sort of an issue where the oil is staying in the engine and not flowing back into the tank?

Thanks

I'm sure someone on here with a 400 Honda will be able to better answer this for you. It's Mother's day, so maybe they are not on. I now Stoobitbot has a 400 and he's a supermod here.

I actually have a 450 but Start the engine and let it run for 3 or 4 minutes. Then, shut the engine down and remove the oil filler cap on the oil tank. The cap has the dipstick attached to it. Insert the dipstick down in the oil tank but don't screw it in. The oil level should be between the two marks.

I cannot explain the raising and dropping of the oil...

OK, now I was told when changing the oil because of the pump you have to fill it and drive it then add more to it to circulate the oil get it up in the cooler and engine etc. and the same goes for draining it. drain it out then run it and drain it out again. is this the correct method?

I did try that was hesitant of course but after the oil stopped draining out I fired up the engine then after I shut it down I got close too another quart out of it.

I think all the different readings has to be because of the pump. 1 time I read it the oil cooler might be full and the tank close to empty, the next time I read it the cooler or enginre might be empty and the tank will be full. does this make sense?

I would believe that when the quad is shut off all the oil should drain back into the tank, but being the tank is separate and there is no gravity flow from the engine to the tank has me wondering.

thanks

Just some friendly advice on new tires. Check with your ATV dealer.
There are so many aftermarket sites, Revco, Royal Distributing, Partzilla, and on and on. Even with their “ big sales”, my local Canam dealer’s REGULAR price beat the tire prices of the 3rd party sellers! People often assume the Dealership will cost them more, but I found this not to be true!

I have replaced the cracked stator cover on my non-running 2006 LT-F400F that I purchased recently, checked all the shafts vs the service manual and pics and advice here.  I replaced missing gears, bushings and washers, made sure that truth marks were all aligned properly, that the shift cam springs felt like they returned properly, etc.  IAfter installing the new stator cover I checked the transfer lever for proper movement from L-H-R and then cranked it up.  Happily, it runs and changes gears well in L,  but it will not shift into H or R for anything.  I have opened it back up and am going back through it looking for the missing puzzle piece(s) but how can I best check that I have everything right this time before buttoning it back up?

So I decided to pick up a small trailer if I could get one for the right price.  I found this one for a few hundred bucks on Craig’s list.  It is  a galvanized trailer which is exactly what I was looking for. The wood was shot and needed some minor repairs which I could care less about as long as the chassis was good.
I striped it down and put a new deck on. I had some vinyl realtree graphics that I had laying around so I added them to the fenders which I think worked out well. Very happy with this little guy.
I'm having the iron workers at my jobmake me up a few lightweight side rails that will have a 22 degree bend in them to accommodate the tires that slightly hang over the edge and will incorporate some tie down points as well.

      Following on from this thread;

I've finally got around to pulling the clutch cover off to have a look at the shifter ratchet mechanism. The screw holding the pinned star wheel has come loose and the wheel flops about. Unfortunately the keyway on the shifter cam has broken on both sides, I found both pieces.
      Anyone had this problem?
The keyway on the cam "ramps" out, so I'm thinking of making a slightly longer key with a ramp ground into it. I'll put it back together with retaining compound. It may not work but I think it's worth a try.
