I was dragging some small tree branches yesterday and my grizzley 700 (EFI) backfired and died. Until that moment, it has run perfectly since I bought it new. It restarts but doesn't want to keep running. After sitting for an hour, it started, ran for 30 seconds and then died again and was harder to restart. It has less than 200 miles, has never been in water, and has good gas in the tank. I called my dealer and his guess was the fuel pump. I don't have a service manual. Is there a fuel filter in the fuel line somewhere? Is the fuel pump in the gas tank? I will probably buy a manual; are the aftermarket ones good enough? Yamaha wants 80 bucks for theirs. Thanks in advance for any replies.

The fuel pump is in the gas tank, it is located directly behind the filler cap under the plastic. I would test it before you replace it, your problem could just as easily be the fuel injector or the throttle position sensor, or something else. A repair manual is definately a good idea because it should have specs and info that you can use to test some of the possible problem parts and it will also have a troubleshooting guide that can help you diagnose your problem. It is hard to find aftermarket manuals for newer machines, so I think the factory manual is going to be your only option, but it is the best way to go IMO. Ebay has the factory manual for $75, but you have to pay for shipping, so you may as well get it from the dealer. What I would not get from the dealer is parts, when you get ready to order parts, check Babbits Sports Center, Service Honda, and Bike Bandit. You will save alot of money on the parts by buying them from an online retailer, and they have the same OEM parts that the dealer will have. Good luck.

Wish I'd bought the extended warranty. My last Yamaha (350 Moto4) went 20 years with no service problems. New fuel pump is over $400.00; guess I'll give the dealer some bucks to find out what's wrong. Thanks for the replies.

I would get a manual and try and diagnose the problem yourself before letting a dealer rape you and maybe replace a few things that don't need replacing before they get it right. Just my personal opinion, I would never, take my quad to a dealer unless I wasn't paying for it. Just too expensive. Ether way, good luck. BTW, another thing I won't let a dealer do is sell me parts. Like I said in the last post, an online parts retailer will save you money. Service Honda sells the fuel pump for $309.69 + shipping. Here is a link to the site, check them out. You can look up the part by entering the part # 3B4-13907-10-00. You can also look up the machine on the micro fische, you will need to look it up by the Yamaha model number, the bigger Grizzlys aren't listed as such, just by the model number.

Update;

Did oil change/filter change (Amsoil synthetic 10/40) replaced spark plug and she is off and running better than ever.

I guess the problem was the spark plug.....I'm surprised that it went bad with only 49.5 hr.s on it.

Just curious, what did the old plug look like? It's condition could be an indicator of another problem. I guess maybe sometimes you just get a bad one that doesn't last. Hope it stays running good for you.

It was very dark in color (on the brown side). I had bad plugs on a Evinrude 9.9 hp 4 stroke outboard that looked exactly like this plug and it acted the same way my Grizzly did.

I know when I bought the quad they told me not to let it sit and idle and not to run it at low rpm's for long periods. Well in the last couple of weeks I was doing all those things.

It has always run extremely well when I was trail riding and even some snow plowing last year but in recent weeks I was grading dirt with my plow and it really working hard.

I'm going to see how she is over the next couple of weeks just doing some trail riding with my buds.

Thanks for the replies

my uncle runs a grizzly 700 efi. he was told the reason for not idling or low idle driving for extended periods of time was the heat off the engine causing fuel to vapourize in the lines making it run lean and then foulling the plug. he changes his plug 5 times a year.

I took it to the dealer, finally. They had it for a week. They did a lot of system checks...everything was ok. They finally added a 'carbon buster' to the gas and it started and ran. They blamed the gas. I get 500 gallons at a time and the barrel was filled the first part of May. I use unleaded, no ethanol. None of my other vehicles have had a problem with the gas, including my other Yamaha, a Moto4, chain saw, leaf blowers, mc's, etc. I guess I don't beat on the Grizz hard enough. Now when I'm riding around the farm I keep the Grizz in low.

more than likely fuel pump. the early 700 raptors had a recall on a bunch of them for the same symptoms... the pump should have a screen on it, not much of a filter I'm afraid. Good Luck.

Hi All.  I introduced myself some weeks ago with my 2006 LT-F400F that needed a list of repairs including replacing the cracked generator cover.  It is back together as of last night and cranks up, idles and revs high pretty well.  Needs some fine tuning and stop backfiring at stop.
The big issue is it will not go into gear.  I reassembled the insides with help from y’all’s posts.  The transfer selector moves from H-L-R, and the foot shifter moves thru the gears and finds neutral easily enough.  Before I tear it back open, the  transfer selector on top does not move as far as the repair manual says.  The diagram shows the shaft moving something like 40 degrees between L and H and 50+ degrees between L and R but it doesn’t move that far even though it finds the indent areas and moves well.
Could this be the problem.  I aligned all the dots on the shifter gears inside and it appeared to not be binding anywhere.  I do hear the gears touching when I shift like they are trying to engage, but zero movement from the ARV
It was somewhat difficult to tell whether all the parts are installed on each shaft.
Are there better/bigger photos somewhere that would allow me to be confident I included all the washers and bushings, etc?  If I had any doubt on parts that were laying inside after the cover broke then I purchased replacements from online stores.
TIA for any input or feedback!!  Pics are from when I first took the generator cover off.

I rebuilt the top end on my 2007 Honda Trx500fe. It ran fine right after the rebuilt. But now when I try to crank it it blows Bach through the carburetor. I held my hand over the opening for the intake air and it blew gas back on my hand. Can figure out what happened all of a sudden. It was cranking and was able to ride it running through all the gears. Now can get it to crank just blowing gas back to the air filter. Need help again. Starting to think I should have walked away from this one.

So I picked up a 1995 Yamaha warrior a while ago and it ran decent with quite a bit of power, I was able to wheelie like nobody’s business, but I noticed that the air filter box lid had bunch of holes drilled in the top and hole in the side, also the air filter itself was serving no function and there was a huge rip in it. So I got a new air box and new filter and when I installed it, the quad lost all power and acted like it was cutting out for split seconds at full throttle. For reference I think it was running rich before because it would backfire a lot so I think it’s just restricting air flow, but how would I adjust to that because I tried leaning out the carb as much as I could but it didn’t seem to do anything unless I put the other airbox lid on with the drilled holes.
any help would be much appreciated
Also even when I put the old lid on, it seemed like just the new air filter gave it enough restriction that it still wouldnt run right

Hey guys! I am new here to the forum and need some help getting my Polaris 325 Magnum 2001 Running.....So I got it for free and it has never run quite right...I put a aftermarket carb on it last year and it was running fine but it only went like 20 maybe 25mph max......But then the needle and seat sealed leaked within a yeah and it flooded it REALLY bad so I changed the oil because it was full of gas. So then I put a genuine Polaris carb on it and I have it set to all the factory specs, but it was still not running right....So I replaced the ignition coil and the spark plug and that solved one of the problems I had (It would bog down and stop running when i would go up a hill) But it still didn't have that much "Punch" to it like my Kawasaki Prairie 300 ans Suzuki Kingkuad 300.....So I replaced the CDI but it's still not running right! It's acting like it rich kinda....So it runs mostly okayish when I have the airfilter on but the top of the airbox off but as soon as I put the airbox lid on it like REALLY bogs down and wants to stall really bad. I have the carb at the factory specs and it has a pretty new fuel pump so I have no ideas whats going wrong! It still nly has a top speed of only about 30-35mph and it sounds like it's choking the whole time! Thank you for sticking to the end, and I hope you guys can help me!
