I'm new here an hoping for fast help. I have a 1997 4x4 Timberline 250 that is my major helper here on the farm. We have had a tough winter so far and the machine is already struggling (another story) with a terrible oil leak (the case is cracked...I will need to find another engine this spring).

After cleaning the last round of snow last week (deeply sub-zero) I pulled the ATV into the barn. It has been in here during the recent extremely warm weather until last night when I pulled it out to get ready for this current and fast approaching weather. The temps dropped day before yesterday to normal below freezing and my son-in-law thinks condensation could have frozen in the line. I could not get the ATV to start at all and ended up pulling it out of the barn by hand, rolling it down to the front gates in preparation for work (I assumed I would eventually get it started!). My son-in-law was just here to get his son and said no gas is coming through the gas line (from the tank). He has added a full bottle of HEAT and changed the spark plug but had to get to his family while he can.

I am about to be hit with up to 15" of snow and the ATV, while covered, is at the gate and the only method I have of cleaning the coming blanket. I am alone here for the week and may not be able to get out of here within the next couple hours.

How long will the HEAT take to open a frozen line? If this is not the problem, is there anything else you can think of that I could do? I cannot get the ATV back in the barn and I am certainly not qualified to do major gas tank surgery. My neighbor was just here and said to get on the ATV and jump up and down -shaking it liberally- every now and then in order to dislodge any ice crystals or debris. HELP!

Welcome to QUADCRAZY. I have seen on some Yamaha atvs, corroded and stuck float pins in the carb causing no fuel flow. If you could get to the carb and remove it enough to take off the bowl, inspect the float. I suppose it could be a frozen fuel line, but it would have thawed out when you had the warm weather.

Take the line off at the petcock and see if fuel will come through the petcock when you turn the vavle to the on or reserve position. If it will come out of the petcock, but won't come out the other end of the line, then I might try blowing compressed air through the line, or just replacing it. Fuel line is cheap. If it won't come through the petcock, try blowing compressed air through the petcock into the tank with the valve in the on position and again with it in the reserve position. Make sure the cap is on the tank when you do that, and be ready to shut the valve off incase the fuel starts coming out. Also, check the tank for debris floating around in there, if you see stuff in the tank, you will want to drain it and clean it out.

I did remove the line from the petcock and moved the switch but nothing came out. That is a very good idea about the compressor though. I'll get the compressor and extension cords on the sled and down to the ATV and try that!

don't run pump gas anymore- it has so much crap added to it that it is actually hygroscopic.

Here we can get non-ethanol super at the gas station pumps- it works great and is cheaper than race fuel, which is not gasoline at all.

regular pump gas will dry out any rubber part it touches- it's a bad deal for anything that's not brand new.

You can pull the screws out of the petcock and drain the tank if nothing else- this way you can examine that petcock and hopefully clean it out.

Grab one of those $2 inline fuel filters next trip to the bike shop- try not to run anything with ethanol in it- often available at the bulk plant but take a gas can cuz they generally pump it out of a drum. With good fuel you'll notice an increase in performance too- it made my pickup run better! LOL

try fuel injection cleaner- it is more $ but usually works a lot better and faster than HEET.

      Hey all, BruinBeater here.  Just joined up from the Pittsburgh, PA area.
      Got a Polaris Sportsman 1000 and a 570 in the garage that don't get ridden quite enough but looking forward to a family trip this fall.
      I'm the unofficial mechanic of the extended family.  In the past month or so I've replaced a transmission in a Chevy Silverado, rust repair on a Chevy Malibu, electrical repair on a Subaru Crosstrek, overheating issue solved on a Can Am Commander, and right now I have a pair of Grizzly and a Bruin 350 in the garage.  Both have a no start condition and have been sitting for 2+ years.

      i need to replace my tire on my atv and i want to know if somebody have a good tire experience on mid-mud terrain and winter plowing. im not sure if i am to go with a tile like a tractor thread or the other ones like ITP mud lite

      Pulled my '86 Moto4 out of shed where it sat for 20 years. I knew it smoked. checked it over a little put in gas and it fired right up!! 
      Drove about 100 yards, ran about half throttle wouldn't idle.  Put on somenew parts, jug/piston and rings, carb and valve seals.
      'went together ok, tuned it over by hand about 6 revs whick went well. Hit the starter it fired for about 6 revs and quit. tried it again fired once and then th sound of something slipping like maybe chain slipping over spoket.
      Took cover off to watch cam sproket, hit starter again, heard same noise and the cam sproket was not turning but jumping a bit. Chain was still tight. You will probably tell me I need to split the lower case but hoping there mightbe something else.
      I don't fully understand the chain tightener, the plunger only moves about 1/4 inch, should it move much more than that when off the motor and compressing it by hand?

      95 bayou 300 2wheel. This is my first four wheeler. The guy I bought it from showed me slight drip on his floor from a drain plug he recently retapped. I figured I could handle a small leak from a second hand machine. Well after a few times of riding it the bayou seems to be running low on oil. Now maybe this is normal operations as well so I refilled the oil. But the next day I notice my drip on the floor was slightly larger. I wanted to see this drain plug for myself so I took off the skid plate and found a pretty rough looking installed drain plug. It does have a small drop but also seemed to have an excessive gasket and maybe some grey looking “jb-weld” ish material around it. So that’s scary but I figure surely that’s not the only source since my floor spot Grew a bit. I went on to find recent moist around the head gasket for the top end. I’ve never seen it drip but it drips on the new starter the guy installed so it seems the head gasket leaks too. He did say he replaced that gasket when I inquired about the darken stains around that area of the motor. He said he replaced that gasket during. Ring replacement when the bayou was smoking. It no longer smokes by the way. So I continue on thinking well maybe I can do another top end gasket myself some day but still the oil on the floor suggests a more visible leak. I mean it’s not a lot but it grew as I mentioned. Then I find my what seems to be an awful thing. The pull cord and starter was replaced by the preavious owner and it appears there’s a busted area on the crankcase where the left side cover mounts to the L-case.I have not seen oil from there but that looks scary to me. Does this area hold oil? I wondered if it doenst maybe I’ll leave it be but if it does it’s probably the reason I lost some oil. I also found tonight oil on the rubber boot cover I think is for the drive shaft or something. Idk my first ride so I’m unsure of how to proceed. Especially with the case cracked like that. I don’t know how the engine works but if there is indeed oil there in the operation of things it seems like I must do a major engine over haul….. any insight would be so very helpful. I bought this for my daughter but I may have been bitten by going with such An older model.

      I have a 2015 sportsman 570 in the shop currently with a cracked oil pan. It is a rental unit, (not my own rental company but a customer's) and the renter that was riding it apparently hit a large rock and dented the bottom of the skid plate into the oil pan and has cracked it where the drain bolt is. (And before any-one tells me to just JB weld it, I am not going to do that for obvious reasons relating to it failing down the trail.  ) It is a quite large chunk that is broken and oil drains out about as fast as you can pour it in. I currently have the customer quoted for removing the engine and replacing the oil pan. Is this the best option? Or should I be looking into cutting the skid plate out, replacing the oil pan, and welding the skid plate back into place? Has anyone done that before?
