First a hello to all. First time poster as I just recently found this forum.

I have a 2008 500 Artic cat that recently had to go into the shop. Problem was the carb was gummed up from bad gas after sitting for several weeks. I always use Sea Foam and Sta-bil as a stabilizer and figured that was all that was needed but apparently not. Couple mechanics at the shop made a few recommendations for when I knew the cat would be sitting for several weeks. One was to put a fuel cutout valve between the fuel pump and carb and close it and allow the engine to run until it quits. Another recommended to just drain the fuel bowl when parking it. Yet another said high octane gas will stay stable a lot longer than the regular unleaded. Don't know if that last one is true or not. So the meat of my question is do any of you have any tricks of the trade to preventing this problem as my cat does stay parked for long periods at a time, especially during the winter months. Ride it more. Sounds like a sarcastic joke but I assure you it's not. Start it up, warm it up and find an excuse to ride it a little...


  • take it down the driveway to check the mail
    borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor
    get a snow plow mounted and keep your driveway plowed
    put a snowmobile suit on the wife and take her out for pizza

Seriously though, finding reasons to start and run the quad is really the easiest way around the winter fuel challenges. Running the quad more often will also prevent you from being that guy asking this question when Spring comes..."Hey guys, I let my quad sit in the shed for 9 months of winter and now I think the battery is dead. The dealer said it'll be $90 for a new one...can this be right?"

By the way, yes, that's right.

The other thing I have been doing is only putting enough gas in the tank that I will need for the planned ride. If I know I can get by with half a tank I just fill it that much and I only buy gas the day before the ride. I think the problems with ethanol mostly involve water separation. The other additives should help with the rest. I have used both sea foam and marine stabil but never used both at the same time.

Appreciate the advise. It's not like I don't ride it at all during the winter....just not that much. I keep a trickle charger on at all times when parked and even during those times I don't ride much I start it up every week and let it idle for a short period, sometimes only every two weeks but it's not like it is shoved in a corner and never ridden. We had a unusual heat wave this summer where temperatures were in the triple digits for 9 weeks and I'm thinking that may be the reason for the gas to go sour so fast.

Senator.....at 68 years of age I don't plow snow from my driveway......I hire someone like you to do it for me. This problem occurred during the summer months so it wasn't from not being ridden as often during the winter.

      Hello All
      I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

      I'm trying to help a buddy out with his bike (he's not really on the internet or familiar with these forums) and I'll admit that I am not super familiar with the transmission and clutches in these bikes. I owned a Brute a few years ago, but never had an issue like this that I had to troubleshoot.
      So basically my buddy bought a group lot of 650's to build one good bike out of. He got it all put together and has it running but when he pushes on the throttle the clutch doesn't engage till the RPM's are quite high and even when its moving it doesn't really speed up, almost seems like its in "limp mode". He's tried 2 different transmissions so I don't think that's the problem. 
      Is there any adjustment on the clutch engagement? Anything else I can tell him to look at? Let me know if you need anymore information if you think you can help.

      Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.
