I have been working on this atv for a few weeks. It had several issues and I"m down to the last one and its kicking my butt. New ecu ( customer got it and the dealer says its an early 06 model ecu and I should have a later). But the atv had this problem with the old ecu as well. I replaced the ecu, harness, new fuel pump, used harness in very good shape. Replaced throttle body with all sensors and injector at once. Checked valves, and timing. No FI codes, tps is adjusted. New spark plug ( spark is great ) I pulled the throttle body off and held it in my hand while turning the engine over and the injector wet my hand with fuel within a few cranks. The problem is the atv does not want to start, if you pour a little fuel down the throttle body it starts up and runs. It will usually start for the rest of the day, but it seems to run lean. The atv does have a K & N filter and exhaust on it. I called power commander and checked several other piggy back systems, but none of them add fuel at start up. I know the ecu being the wrong one could be causing this problem, but I find it hard to believe since the atv does run good once you get it started. The original problem was a bad harness ground causing the ecu to burn out, plus it had been sank so when I switched it over I cleaned every relay and plug on it. I have been through the manual and checked everything that would make the atv run in limp mode and it all checks out. This was just a precaution, as once its started it does not go to limp mode. I keep the battery charged and also give a 40 amp boost when cranking on it. What am I over looking?

is the temp sensor bad ? had a problem like that on an injected yamaha and the temp sensor was bad and didnt give enough fuel for a cold start .... you can also check the wires for the temp system... thats the only thing i can think of on it ... ill look in some shop manuals and see if i can find any thing else...

I didn"t dip and ohm out the tempature, but I do know that when I first got it it had a high idle problem, like 3000 rpms and within a few minutes the temp light came on ( same as fi ). I will pull it and clean it to be sure its reading correctly though. Thank you for the reply, anything you can think of Ill try. I have just flat run out of ideas.

no prob ... i have worked on alot of quads an have a small shop ... but thats all i can come up with on it .. i know the temp system on some determine how much fuel is injected .. the comp adjusts the fuel pulse on the injector depending on temp ...

Yeah I used to own a small shop, now I do trouble shooting and engine work for a couple of local shops. So you can imagine what I looks like now working on this thing on and off for 3 weeks. I will pull the sensor tomorrow. I already told them I need the right ecu, since the customer bought his own he needs to come up with a little 500 dollars to make that happen, and I have a feeling hes going to pay and pick up. I would really like to figure this out though, its one of the tougher problems I have ever had, minus electrical problems of course, lol.

This project had got put on the back burner. I asked another mechanic I know to take a look at it and he said fuel pressure is down. I stuck the line in a 12 ounce water bottle and it took about 3 seconds till 4 ounces of the bottle. Also once your done trying to start the atv you if you disconnect the fuel line there is no pressure. Im going to replace the fuel pump, but I still intend to pull the sensor because it seems you all are right. Thats the only item that can really affect the air fuel ratio without setting off the f.i. light. I will post the final find.

Well after replacing the fuel pump, and pressure valve to the tank there is no change. Im going to pull the sensor tomorrow and clean it. ohm it out and take one more shot at it. If its not the temp sensor the last suspect would be the ecu. Although I just find it hard to believe since the atv had the problem with the old ecu. But there were two ecu models put out in 06. Although Im pretty sure the numbers just had to do with the recall.

Hi, new to this forum but this seems like the exact same issue my buddy is having with his 06 king quad. No cold start. We haven't been out for a while then this winter we went to go on a poker run and it wouldn't run. Threw it on a charger and even off the boost it wouldn't start. Put some de-icer in it and still no go. It will go with a shot of Quick Start in the throttle body and then runs fine. If it sits for any length of time it needs this little shot to fire up. His ecu was upgraded from the previous owner. As far as the temp sensor went we threw it in a heated shop over night and still wouldnt start on its own. Definetly was warmed up to what it would have been in the spring. Always ran great before and no issues. Really interested it what you might think since the problem is really similar.

well after replacing everything you could possibly think of. Checking valves down to stator I finally gave up and just unplugged the air pressure sensor. without the vacuum running the idle is a little low but only dies once warmed up. This atv has a filter and pipe so Im going to add a power commander to fix the lean issue once running, however after much research the power commander does not have a fuel additive during starting. What I found is that the problem is a lean issue. All the atvs have it, but it seems some of them get so bad that it does not receive enough fuel to start.

I haven't checked over the quad in detail but I think I will start buy pulling the plug and see how it's running as you mentioned the lean running condition. We put a pipe on it a couple months back and he had no programmer so we ran it for a bit on a new plug then pulled it and observed it being pretty greyish white. I was very surprised and told my buddy there was no way to run it like that without a programmer. So we removed it and put the stock one back on. We did install a snorkel kit in which we modified the air box to allowing a ton more air in versus stock before we had tried the exhaust. Going by what you say of them being fairly lean I have a pretty good feeling that just may be our issue.

Thanks for the info.

Well so far I've pulled the pump and cleaned the tank and screen. Everything was pretty good but I had it tore down that far so might as well. Refilled with fresh high test gas and still the same. I pulled the injector and with the lines all hooked up there is no initial spray when u first turn the bike on while the pump is running. Once you start to actually start the bike then it sprays fuel. Is this normal to only spray once trying to start?

its the valves, they are shim and bucket valves, after 500 miles brand new they need to be checked but depending on abuse by 5000-7000 miles they need to be re-shimmed, im currently working on one myself with the same problem but saw the white spark plug and adjust the throttle position sensor to let in more fuel and that wasnt the issue now im just looking for a valve clearance chart for this quad and stumbled upon your thread.

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a really Heavy Duty ATV cover. I have bought several and they do keep the water off somewhat, but they are very thin and do not contour with the shape very well and water pools up in the rack louvers. I think i may be looking for a heavy canvas one, if anyone has a recommendation it would be greatly appreciated.

So we are almost a month into winter and I've been so busy working on my house that up until today, I didn't realize that we just haven;t gotten any real snow yet to warrant putting the plow on my grizzly. So that got me thinking, what are the latest plows out there and what ATV plows are the best? I've got 2 snow plows for my grizzly, a quadboss pile driver atv plow set up and a snowsport ATV plow. They are both a bit dated now and I tend to stick with the snowsport due to ease of use and I just like it so much. So if you have a plow on your ATV, please let us know what it is and post a picture with your atv/plow would be awesome. Would also like to know what you like and dislike about it.
This is back a while when I did a write up on these 2 plows.... in 2009 I got the snowsport and in 2012 I got the quadboss.
