Clutch cover leak on Big Bear 350

Hey guys,

A friend dropped off his late 80's Big Bear 350 for me to give it a once over. You know, oils's, brakes and grease. I thought I was done with the bike when I noticed a pool of oil under the bike. It looked like it was coming from the clutch cover. It looks like someone has worked in the clutch before because of all of the sloppy blue silicone around the cover.

Now my questions since i dont have a manual are..

1) Can I just remove the cover and not have to worry about pieces of the drivetrain falling out?

2) Is there a gasket, do I need a gasket or can i just clean and re-silicone?

3) I noticed a clutch adjuster on the cover, do I need to do anything to it before I remove the cover or or just leave it alone?

I've not worked on too many Yamaha's before so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks Rich

So i found the problem. The bottom left hand bolt the one thats about 3" long was wrong. Who ever replaced the clutch must have lost the bolt in question and replaced it with a different (Wrong Size) bolt. Instead of using a metric fine thread bolt the dumb as* use a standard 1/4 thread bolt that was too short. They cross threaded the bolt so bad that it never tightened down on the cover, thus causing the leak.

I drilled and tapped the hole and replaced the bolt so all should be good now.

I was able to save and clean the gasket that was on the cover and I used the blue gasket silicone to seal it. I'm going to wait till tomorrow to refill the bike with oil.

Thanks

      Greetings,
Have a 88 LT80 that been sitting for a couple years. Bought a new piston, cylinder and head. Installed these, rolled it over and it quickly locks up.  Took carb apart. It was full of what appears to be 2 cycle oil. Cleaned it, but keeps locking up and 2 cycle oil continues to seap from exhaust port.  When i installed new cylinder, I noticed crankcase was full of oil.  I'm now wondering if that oil is what's getting sucked up into cylinder.  Should there be no oil in crankcase?  If that the case, how is crank and rod lubricated?  Sorry, never worked on a 2 stroke. Thanks!

Starting this build thread to keep up with everything on my build and hope to motivate someone!

I picked up this 2008 Yamaha Big Bear 250 2 weeks ago. A guy that I hunt with parked it at the hunt club for a year or so before I asked him if he wanted to sell. He said " fill my feeder and throw some batteries in my cameras, and you can have it". Sounds like a deal to me!
I have attached some pictures of how it sat under a tarp in the woods and when I got it home and cleaned up a little.

having an issue with the unit when running under a load up a hill or in high gear, seems like the belt is slipping, there is a clapping sound coming from the primary clutch like it releases and snaps back in. i don't think I should have a noise like that. this is a friends unit and he has already replaced the primary twice with the same result.
not sure where to look next

I see quite a few ads for that  Tribotex additive. It's kind of expensive, has anyone used it it their ATV or any other vehicle?
