Battery for Winch?

Hey guys

I have to replace my battery on my Sportsman soon and I was wondering if there is a better battery for winching other than the stock OEM battery. I was also looking at getting a battery charger that will keep the battery charged while the bike is in storage.

What do you guys use?

i have a yuasa battery for my bike (was told they are supposed to be one of the best.. sales gimmick?), and a 2amp motorcycle trickle charger for top ups

just the same as OX... i have had very good luck with YUASA batterys... and i have a battery maintainer that i plug into my quads ... i have had the battery last up to 7 years that way ...

I have regular lead acid YUASA in it right now and I want to upgrade to a Maintenance Free AGM somewhere in the 220 CCA or more with a longer Amp Hour.

Keeping any battery on a maintainer is key for a long life and full charges inbetween plowing.

I swear by the Odyssey batteries.

I had one in a old standup jetski that lasted a good 10 years under unspeakable abuse. Full discharges, floodings, and full salt water shorts.

They also have near no internal discharge do they can be left alone without a battery maintainer for seasons on end and will still be ready to go when needed.

They are expensive, but so worth it.

They might be a newe company but the specs on the batteries are awesome. an 8 cell battery weighs only 2lbs!

But someone mentioned using a trickle charge on the battery...

Is the necessary?

What qualifies for if it is necessary? The length between rides and/or the temperatures in the area?

If its a ballistics battery you shouldnt use a trickle charger.

A regular battery you should use a trickle charger if you are storing your atv for the winter or if you arent going to use it for a while.

i do for long periods of no use, trickle charge is small juice up mostly ....

my batteries are inside now, out of the machines, i juiced them when i brought them in, and i'll juice them before i put them back in...

It all depends on the temperatures and parasitic draw. It's best to remove the battery and store it somewhere where it will be warm. Also lead acid batteries (wet cell) have internal draw that happens all the time, so they will discharge themselves and it gets worse with age.

It's a good idea to put them in the garage and on a tender every so often during winter. This also keeps the electronics in your quad from draining them. At the very least, disconnect the negitive terminal before leaving it be for long periods of time then charge it before you use it again.
