bobbymac Posted April 29, 2012 Author #2 Posted April 29, 2012 (The previous thread was cancelled because I typed the wrong model # - SORRY.) Just bought used LT-A450X quad yesterday. Started up OK. Trailered it home 2 hours. This morning when I try to start it I just get a flashing dash and clicking sound - no starter action at all. The sound is coming from a dead end switch that is about 6" behind the battery and in front of the fuse area. (Kill switch relay?) Anyways, the money is gone and the quad is just clicking at me. (The battery appears to have full 12V charge when checked and yes it is in N with the parking break set.) Push the starter ... hear the clicks. Any ideas? And thanks a lot - I feel helpless. Quote
Mudflap64 Posted April 29, 2012 #3 Posted April 29, 2012 Sounds like a dead battery. Try jump starting it. Just because the battery shows 12v doesn't mean it has enough juice to crank the engine over. The best way to check a battery is with a battery tester, not a volt meter. That thing clicking is most likely the starter relay. I'm gonna bet 10:1 that it just needs a new battery. Quote
marioweldinginc Posted April 29, 2012 #4 Posted April 29, 2012 Agreed showing 12v doesnt guarantee it has the cranking power to turn the engine over. Have the battery tested. While your at it check your grounds. Dont look at em take them off and sandpaper the metal underneath Sent from my SGH-T959V using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2 Quote
bobbymac Posted April 29, 2012 Author #5 Posted April 29, 2012 Thanks. I will get a new battery this afternoon. (Just learned the guy who sold me the bike failed to mention that it was the original 5+ y.o. battery.) Guess I should have asked! Quote
XWrench3 Posted May 2, 2012 #7 Posted May 2, 2012 this is just a heads up for everyone out there with possible battery problems. when i went to Suzuki tech school (electrical) one of the things they told us was if there was no other way to test the battery, it should still hold over 10 volts when the starter was running (rolling the engine over). if there was not 10 volts, there was either a battery or starter motor problem. in the 35+ years that i repaired motorcycles, quads, snowmobiles, etc. i probably only replaced 4 or 5 starter motors. and THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of batteries! bobbymac Posted May 13, 2012 Author #8 Posted May 13, 2012 Sorry for the delay in getting back. It was the battery as expected and I now know that having 12 volts on a meter reading does NOT mean the battery is good. Never too old to learn something I should have known for years. Quote
XWrench3 Posted May 13, 2012 #9 Posted May 13, 2012 dont beat yourself up. we all learn things most every day. it is when you refuse to learn that you are in trouble! Quote
