  1. '11 Grizz 700 here and I ordered Yamaha front lower boot replacement kit 28P-2510G-00 which consisted of 5 parts. The 4 parts pictured plus a plastic bottle of grease... First time doing this and the videos I've seen entail removing the entire axle then removing the top boot to get at the lower boot. Now when putting back together the top boot area (even though the boot isn't being replaced) it's suggested not to reuse the old axle retaining ring but to only use a new ring. So, seeing as how the kit I ordered did not come with the 2 (I believe) retaining rings for the top part of the axle or a second bottle of grease for the top boot it looks like I'll need to order some more parts before I can start on this one. Whadda y'all think? Looks like I have all the parts (B, C, D, E) I'll need for the lower section... So now I need to get the parts (G, H, I, J, K) for doing the top part... Also, from what I've seen I think I'll be needing part 26 as well, which I think is an axle retaining clip. So, should I get this part too? So now on to these clamps that came in the kit... I've seen how other clamps work but not entirely sure about this one. The only retaining barb I can tell that's on this clamp is the little one in the yellow circle. Other clamps I've seen have much larger retaining nubs about the size of the ones with the blue arrows. So I'm guessing for this clip you use pliers to squeeze the blue arrow nubs together then hook using the small nub in yellow? And lastly some questions on getting the 27mm axle nut off. I've seen this done with a pneumatic impact gun on a video but I don't like using those things. One way I've seen it described is to jack up and take the wheel off, remove the center plastic cap, replace the wheel and lower to the ground for some traction. Put the machine in park and chock the wheels, then put your wrench on the nut with possibly a breaker 'cheater' bar and crank. Same procedure for putting it on except you would prob use a torque wrench. Does this wound like the best way to get this 27mm axle nut off without using an impact gun? Even though the wheels would be chocked I imagine the gears (in park) would take the brunt of resisting the torque on the nut when it's being forced off. Would this be too much force on the gears? Crap I know this is a long post already so sorry bout that. I'll just finish with summarizing my questions which have prob gotten lost in all that writing... 1) Should I order the full second upper boot kit plus the axle retaining clip part # 26? 2) How to use the retaining clips in the kit I got 3) Best way to get the 27mm axle nut off. Thanks for hanging in there with me through all that .
  2. Anybody know the axle nut size on a '11 Grizz 700? Also, could use a link to maybe a youtube video or a how to thread explaining how to change out the lower front boot.
  3. For the time being I'm gonna have to let the old 4x4 sit out back next to my garage. But I'm not too happy with it just sitting out in the open and I'm wondering what would be a good way to deter thieves. First it'll be covered of course from top to bottom. Second I guess I'll be digging big a** hole and filling it with probably around 500lbs of concrete with a giant 1" diameter loop of rod sticking out the top. It'll actually be a huge U-bolt clamp I'll get from a local fastener company. Using this I'll try to physically secure it looping some hardened chain through what part of the atv I don't know. Only other idea (which is a bit far fetched I'll admit) is to hook up some kind of alarm system by way of a cable like you see sometimes on store merchandise out for display. I assume it would be hooked up to a loud speaker. Again I know this one is going somewhat overboard but considering how easily the quad could be jacked it might be the one deterrent that keeps it safe. Open to your suggestions PS. Don't really live in a bad neighborhood but the neighborhood kids are through my back yard all the time especially at night...thus the need for security.
  4. After looking at this a little bit more it looks like the nub on the hinged gas cap cover would fit into the grommet when it's closed. Duh.
  5. 2011 700 Grizz here and I'm wondering what part goes in the hole in the middle of this pic... Is it this part?... 90480-01558-00 GROMMET $3.76 Seems like something more should go in there to plug up the hole. If it's just the grommet great, I'll order it and be done. But it there's something more that goes in there a pic would be much appreciated.
  6. Really don't like the idea of wearing a helmet but for safety's sake I cant justify flying down a dirt road at 45 without wearing one, so I'm wondering what's a good helmet to get for someone who doesn't want a helmet on at all. Light weight would be a priority as well as open face.
  7. Just got this 700 grizz and I'm adding a hitch ball on the back just for the sake of having a good trailer tie down point. Not sure what I'd be towing with the bike in the future but I suppose I'd like to get whatever ball size would be most common on the things I'd be likely to tow with an ATV. So which size yall think would be best...1 7/8", 2", or 2 5/16" ?
  8. Replacing one of the front lower boots on a '11 700 grizz and not sure where to source the part. This is my first service job on this bike or on an atv period. I'd like to get at least OEM, but if there's something better that's not too much more I'd probably go for that. What's the best place to source this part w/ the best price? So far I've found... YamahaPartsNation.com YahamaPartsPitStop.com BikeBandit.com RockyMountainATVmc.com And last, I've watched a couple youtube vids on doing the boot swap and seems fairly simply. To change out the lower boot you have to remove the whole axle (jerk it out), take the top boot off, dismantle the top side, then replace the bottom boot from the opposite side. But when they go to put the axle back in I haven't seen anyone mention regreasing the splines of the axle before reinserting? Surely this is just something they've left out. What type of grease should be used here? Any tips on doing this job much appreciated!
  9. New to ATVing here and just got a '11 Grizz with the belt drive transmission and I've been suggested to take along an extra CVT belt along in remote rides just in case. I'm somewhat knowledgeable about where to get quality parts for cars but not so much for ATVs. Who makes the best CVT belt for my bike? Also, who makes just ok belts and who should I stay away from? Also, I'm looking at getting a snatch block for a synthetic rope winch and wondered if the type rope determines what type of block you should get...or are all snatch blocks the same and I'm just thinking about this one too much? Thanks
  10. Thanks again kv. Ended up getting a Superwinch Terra 35 SR. I believe it has both features you mentioned.
  11. I've seen the suggestion to either carry some kind of fire extinguisher or a fire retardant material on trail rides. I doubt I'll be taking on the weight of even a small fire extinguisher, but I'd still like to have some way to put out a fire. What would be a good 'fire extinguishing material' I could bring along that would work say if a fire started in a hard to reach part of the motor that I could just maybe grab a hand full of and throw it on? I'm imagining it would be something granular like sawdust (but of course not sawdust). Thanks
  12. Thanks kv. That's probably what I'll do... just take what's needed plus enough to change out a drive belt.
  13. Brand new to ATVing, just got a '11 Grizz 700 and I'm putting together an emergency tool list to take along on remote rides. I'm looking at hex key sets and realized I have no idea if I need metric or standard. So which type hex keys does my grizz take? And whichever it is, are all the bolts and nuts etc on the bike consistent...like are all either metric or standard? Thanks
  14. OK here's the big list of all the suggestions I've been given, alphabetized to help sort out the duplicates. It's crazy long and of course depending on the type of exploring you’re doing not everything’s entirely necessary. The list covers everything from a light day ride to really back country stuff miles away from anybody. Long list but probably still worth a read through. 6" socket set extension air compressor (batt powered) or high volume manual pump air pressure gauge ammo boxes to keep everything dry battery - USB for phone battery pack for atv (Antigravity) (Peak booster pack fairly cheap) boots bug repellent bungee cords diff size camera can of baked beans can opener carabiners - 2 cell phone charger cell phone in a ziploc bag channel locks - the big ones (my blue handle ones) clevis to attach to a pulley to a tree with tow strap CO2 cylinders (3) or can of fix a flat compass cotter pins crescent wrench D rings dry socks electrical tape fire extinguisher / fire extinguishing materials (prob lighter and smaller than a whole fire extinguisher) fire extinguisher fire starter stuff – alternatively some fine steel wool and a 9v battery first aid kit (simple) flashlight food - cans fuses - spare garbage bags 2 gas – 2 gal glasses - extra pair of Rx gloves (light leather) goggles gorilla tape GPS w/ extra set of new batteries hammer - small hand cleaner handgun head light bulb - spare helmet hex keys hooded sweatshirt ibuprofen key - spare for ATV LED light bar light – black diamond head light light sticks lighters - two multi tool multimeter needle nose pliers w/ wire cutter part newspaper for fire paper map of the area pepper - just regular table pepper about 5oz or more - plugs radiator leaks, blown head gasket pepper spray - bear PLB - persona locator beacon (satellite) pliers pulley for winching pulley block rain clothes ratchet straps (2 small like my camo ones) recoil starter relays - spare rope (poly - at least 50 ft) saw - folding screwdriver - multi shovel - small fold up side cutters ? silicone rubber tape silicone tube small saw socket set - 3/8 and 1/4 drive, or a 3/8 drive w/ 1/4 adapter – largest socket is a 3/4 space blanket spare belt for a CVT drive spark plug + gap tool spark plug socket/wrench spray bottle of soapy water T25 and T15 drivers tarp (small for rain events) telescopic magnetic pickup tool test light and volt meter tire plugs - twice as many as you think you'll need toilet paper or wipes tow strap towel old trunk on back rack to carry everything universal tool kit like... https://www.channellock.com/39100-unifit-socket-set.aspx utility knife w/ spare blades valve stem tool and spare caps vice grips - a 4in adjustable and a 12in adjustable water – lots bottles pre-frozen winch wire - electrical - 10 ft of 14ga wire (bailing) - wire spool – (snare wire) (mechanics wire) wrench adjustable wrench to remove axle castle nut - in case you break a drive shaft zip lock bags zip ties 12'-15'
  15. Just got my first ATV, a '11 700 Grizz and planning on doing some trail riding soon. First piece of equipment I'm adding is a winch and I'm needing some suggestions for something that would be good for my kind of riding but comes at a decent price. Usually I try to get quality stuff (Warn) but since I'm needing to conserve denero right now I figure this winch is something that (at least for me) doesn't have to be crazy great/expensive. Although I'd still like to get something that's decent quality and can pull well, in my middle age I hardly think I'll be voluntarily launching into any terrain that has the potential to get me too stuck...thus I doubt I'll be using the winch that often. Anybody have a suggestion for a model that's decent quality for around say $300 bucks? Doesn't have to be built to be used time after time but quality does still count. Thanks
  16. Thanks kvf. I"ve posted this question in a couple places so after I get all the info I'll come back and post the total big list.
  17. New to ATVing and by the end of the summer I'll probably be heading out into some remote mountain regions for some back country trail riding, and I'm wondering just what kind of stuff/tools etc I should bring along in case of breakdowns/events etc. Short list so far includes a GPS (probably a Garmin Montana 650T), a tire repair kit, and courtesy of my Mom one of those satellite personal locator beacons, probably the ResQLink+ from ACR. Any other suggestions for stuff that might come in handy?
  18. Just got my first 4x4 ('11 700 Grizz) and I'm entirely unfamiliar with anything aftermarket. Does anyone make a second passenger seat for the '11 700 Grizz like I've seen on some of the Polaris 2 ups?
  19. Is there such a thing as a factory shop manual for ATVs? That's the one I believe vehicle manufacturers publish for their dealership mechanics. Trying to find one for a '11 700 Grizz. Or anything similar would be helpful.
  20. Welp here's my next three questions to help get me into my first machine (looking to buy used btw)... 1) I'm hooked on the camo color scheme but don't want to let that stop me from getting into a good bike. Say you had something like a red or green 2010 Grizz 550 and wanted to turn it camo. How would you go about that? Buy all the plastic off ebay and sell what comes off yours to recoup some of the cost? Or is there some kind of plastic or material cover you could get? Also, about how much would each route end up costing? 2) I've seen the back end of some machines that look like they're just not set up to handle a hitch ball. Are there some machines that you can't put a ball on at all, or are there aftermarket conversion kits made for every machine out there? 3) Same question for winches. I've seen some Grizz front ends that, either because of the molding or frame, just don't look like they'd take a winch. Am I right, or will all bikes (or at lease all Grizzlys) be able to accept an aftermarket winch kit? Thanks
  21. Here's the deal... I'm a first time atv buyer and have been studying hard all aspects of buying and evaluating these things for a used purchase. Now after months of looking everywhere I finally found a local private seller through word of mouth that may be offering a hell of a deal. Story is... Guy's got a 2012 Yamaha Griz 550 w/ EPS with 2900 miles and 250 hours on it and hes asking $4900. Says he got it from NPA? in Cincinnati for $4400 and paid $125 to ship it. After new tires, brakes and oil he says he's got $5000 into it coming from a dealer-only wholesale auction. I've only got $4500 to spend and really stressed that and he says he'll sell it to me if the guy coming on Friday doesn't pay the full $4900 price he's asking. So yeah fairly excited about the prospects here. This one blue books for something like $5500-$5800 retail. But I'm still a little too wet behind the ears still to be confident about evaluating these things used so I'm cramming as much info as I can before I go take a look at it. So don't want to get burned. So couple questions... 1- I've seen some with more and less miles than the 2900 this one has. But have been taught it's not so much the mileage as how they were put on. Anyone have insight about this specific model with almost 3000 miles and 250 hours on it? 2- Are there any special problems the 2012 550 EPS Griz has that I should be looking out for?
  22. Ok another three questions to help me get up to speed on getting my first ATV... 1- It's after the court clerk has closed and you're standing there with the guy after your test drive and you've decided you really want the machine he's selling, and if you don't put cash in his hand now it might be gone tomorrow. So how do you know there's not a lien on the title or that the machine is even his? Just wondering how you go about purchasing a machine and make sure you don't get ripped off somehow title wise. 2- How much do private parties generally come off their asking price if they haven't put something like 'FIRM' in their advertisement? Also, how much do dealerships generally come off their price? 3- I've been told to stay away from ten year old Polaris from a number of different people, but that they've come a long way since then. How old is the oldest Polaris I should consider buying used? Around when did they start to improve in quality? Thanks
  23. Educating myself getting ready to buy my first 4x4 and have some questions. 1 - Engine size. One of my wants is to be able to pull a trailer up a trail with a decent amount of camping gear piled in, so I've been told to either look for a good size motor or one with hi-lo gears. From what I've learned so far it seems that something like a Sportsman 500 HO or 550 Griz would do that job fairly well. But for the sake of opening up my options could I possibly look into a smaller engine than these if it had hi-lo? Put another way...what's the smallest engine size I should be looking for on a machine that has hi-lo considering my pulling needs? 2 - Can add power steering? Is it possible to add power steering to a model that didn't come with it, but other versions of that same year's model did? For example some of the 2008 Griz 550s came with PS and some didn't. If I found one that didn't have it could I reasonably assume I could add it later considering the frame and equipment has probably already been designed to work with it? 3- Mileage and age. Most of the machines I'm seeing have between 500-1200 or so miles and I'm wondering how many is too many? Seen some with 2-3000+ and I'm most def staying away from those. But whats the mileage limit where you can expect major things (read expensive) to start going wrong with the machine? I've heard someone generally speaking say they would rather take a 2006 with 1000 miles on it vs a 2012 with 2000. Would most people agree?
