  1. In fact it wont spark while im feeding it twelve volts and it wont spark until i plug the red black wire back in
  2. Thats bad loosing power in every gear, i think you need an engine rebuild.
  3. I think this is a fairly common problem with these machines i would check the shift linkage to make sure non of the attachment points nuts have vibrated loose, and check to make sure everything in the linkage is tight.
  4. Will the engine start back up.
  5. Dug up a few photos of a 3813 i worked on about 10 years ago. basically the same engine older the newer one got another HP from somewhere. I had to replace the timing belt and water pump, and starter just down and to the right of the big cam gear is the water pump the flywheel and coil is removed the coil mounts on those 2 nubs just below the cam gear and the charging coils are still in place around the crank. In the second photo you can see the flywheel laying on the tire. A beautiful little engine but a nightmare to work on and It relys solely on battery power to run dead battery wont run. A plastic cover covers all that up and when reinstalled to the drive shaft is so close to the firewall you cant get in there. Not sure where the coil is i actually pulled these up to get a closer look at it i had to remove it to get the flywheel off. Just thought a few photos would give a better idea of what i was working on.
  6. It will spark if i feed 12 volts into the coil on the red and black wire at the connector. So i unplug the connector feed 12 volts into the coil for a few seconds try it with it unplugged still no spark, but when i plug the connector back in it will spaark for a little while and then nothing. It seems like im feeding voltage into a capacitor and when it runs out it wont spark anymore. The sppark does look weak but it will run on it for a few seconds If it is powered by the rotating of the magnet then you might be right it is just not generating enough to spark from flakes or rust and corrosion hard to see in there until i get some more access, according to the manual the red and black wire is for safety features only to keep it from sparking.
  7. Thanks! I havent ridden the thing in years i will have to ask my brother to check and see if it passes the test. I know the kick starter hasnt worked in years and i was going to fix that for him and thought while i was in there just go ahead and replace that bearing but if not needed would be a waste.
  8. That sounds perfect for what you need and free, you will be surprized how good it will look with a little cleanup. Loosen the clamp on the carb it will come right out of the boot. Take the cover off unhook the throttle cable and unscrew the enricher plunger(choke cable) upper left black plastic piece on 3rd photo. Petcock screws may be rusted or corroded take care not to strip them when taking off.
  9. Welcome! Hope you enjoy the forum it is quite interesting if you enjoy wrenching, better stuff here than in the newspaper.
  10. Ouch! 200 is quite a bit for a battery here they are around 65.00 and i have bought several of the ones you listed for 49 and they seem to hold up well.
  11. If carb is the only problem it would definately be worth fixing, the syrup means its been sitting for a very long time, i would clean up the fuel system tank and petcock of corse carb and go from there.
  12. Excellent, you are so good with this stuff i appreciate your knowledge and expierience. I understand now why the manual says replace the coil , there is so much electronics there to go bad. I still may try to get an ohm reading, without pulling the engine very tricky to do, ,a very expensive part to replace 200+ may not be worth it. Its not a quad just a 35 year old lawnmower.
  13. I was going to replace the clutch side because the kick starter is also not working thought they might be related plus these starter gears dont seem to last very long before they are stripped out also thought that might be related causing that problem
  14. The coil is right by the flywheel still not sure how it gets power the only wire going to it is the red and black
  15. Actually found an OEM one way bearing for the clutch side still available the alternator side is not .
  16. Those tires look wicked i like them
  17. They all have something a little different but does the same thing, my honda has a button on the brake lever pull the brake lever push the button and shift to reverse, my yamaha has a knob you turn and hold it and then shift to reverse, my suzuki actually has a shif lever with high, low, and reverse, i actually like that better, but they all are cable operated to move the interlock.
  18. I was asked one time why have all your problems have to be so complicated, well my answer, if it wasnt for bad luck i wouldnt have any at all. This is a perfect example clearly a straight forward fix, instead i find gears that dont match anything i can find and completely does not match anything sold to fix the problem, but when i find that larger gear that is unavailable i should be good. Then i have to find why its shearing the gears and i suspect its the one way bearing on the clutch side not doing its job.
  19. This project is interesting. It says in the diagnostic procedure to unhook the red black wire and see if it sparks, that is the only wire going to the coil, so how would it spark without power. I must be missing something. I checked the red black wire and no power there. I feed power directly to it and got no spark, then plugged it back together and it sparked. A little while later wouldnt spark again.
  20. Sorry to hear your paint didnt harden. That a fair to midland job getting that back off. I have never painted on e, wasnt sure how the paint would hold up to the flexing of the plastic, let us know how it works out. I have used clear coat with good results it seems to flex a little better than paint, i get the plastics as smooth as possible with multiple sandpaper grades and generally polish it but if its real bad i cover with clear coat to get the shine back. The tires look great has the best rating of any on Amazon and also the biggest seller. I got another project im working on i think i will try those.
  21. You are coming right along how did the painting go tires look good i was looking at those tires but went with the Kenda they had a less aggressive tread which is what i wanted.
  22. Oh you do have to turn a reverse knob thats the cable you are referring to.
  23. No it opens vertical.
