2005 Honda 400ex blowing oil? (jetting too)

I have a 2005 400ex that is blowing more oil than normal. :aargh: When i start it while its cold, it blows smoke that im pretty sure is oil! Also, every time i go riding (4-6 hours) It blows a little less than half a tank of oil. My dad says its the piston rings but hes no expert! Also anyone know how i should jet it for a k&n filter? (only because the previous owner had put bigger jets on it, i dont know why)

Is it blue smoke? With a K&N you are getting more air in, does it have an aftermarket exhaust? I would check the K&N website and see what they say about jetting specs with their filters. Keep in mind, it could very well be worn out rings.

Oil smoke will look different depending on how much oil is being burnt. A little oil usually shows blue smoke, if you are burning alot of oil, and it sounds like you are, it will burn white and smell very strong. Could be piston/rings, could be worn valve guides/seals, could be both. I wouln't worry about the jetting until you get the motor fixed, if you mess with the jetting now, you will probably have to change it again when you get the motor running right. But generally you need to jet just a bit richer for a high flow air filter.

      Hi everyone.
Let me explain the thread title.
My husband and I are very active in the nudist community, and we have stayed at many and most of the mainstream nudist and clothing optional campgrounds in the USA. We are now approaching our retirement and would like to start a podcast to share those off the road / backwoods / little known camping areas where nudity is allowed. We have purchased a 5th wheel camping trailer with a rear garage for the ATV and now need some good reports on the one to buy.
We are most interested in a side by side unit but would love to get your thoughts.
Feel free to stop by and say Hi and ask anything you would like to better understand what we are looking for in an offroad unit.
Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you.

Hello, what is the best method for installing bearings into their race? I've set one in place and tapped it down until it was metal on metal. Is that sufficient? Surely it's not supposed to go into the race until flush? Also. does the coil spring on the seal go into carrier bearing housing not facing out? Thanks! 🙂 Seal goes in until flush correct?

The studs in the sprocket hub are stripped out. The hub is probably walloed out also. Probably will have to have a new sprocket hub. I doubt I have the ability nor the tools needed for this job. Thanks for all suggestions/opinions!

So here where I live in Newfoundland Canada, they let you drive your bike on the road provided it’s registered and insured same goes for crossing highways but on trails you don’t need to be insured. And I don’t even think you need a full license to insure your bike they said it was up to the insurance company. I’m trying to get my old 1985 Suzuki 250 registered they have to do a search for it to make sure it hasn’t been in anyone else’s name first. Hopefully it comes back clean I am pretty excited

I've been using Valvolene 10w 40 ATV oil but, it's like $8.00 a quart. Is that about the going rate? Or is there cheaper alternatives that would be suitable? Thanks
