220Bayou

My First ATV 2002 Kawasaki Bayou 220

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,  I'm about to get my first ATV, 02 bayou 220.

Neighbor said I could have it if I fix it, Carburetor problems, and needs a new ignition switch. last ran 2 years ago, said he changed the oil in it twice a year and never ride it hard.

Hope I got me a good ride.

Hey @Muleman good luck with the bike.  Should be fun working on it and getting it running.  I’m currently working on the same bike so any questions you have I may be able to help you with as well as the rest of the member base her at Quadcrazy.

Good luck and feel free to post some pics.

One question, I know the 220 supposedly has 5 gears, is it auto shift or manual? Or does it depend on the year model.

Every bike is obviously difrent.  If yiur bike is the same as mine which it should be then you should see a gear shifter on the left lower side ?

If so it’s all the way down to neutral and up for first, second and so on.  Then reverse is when it’s in neutral there is a round knob on the left front plastic under the handle bars.  You turn that and hold it while pressing gear shifter down and it will go into reverse.

Exactly what @Frank Angerano  said, and should be what we used to call semi-automatic. You have to shift but with no clutch. Bayou 220 is a great atv, it was my first utility quad after I moved away from an older sport 87 yamaha warrior. Here's a much older picture of me and my bayou back in 2002 or 2003..

Good luck with it, make sure you download the manual here:

One thing I like about Rocky mountain ATV, you can choose your shipping speed, compared to Babbitts or Partzilla.

but there's always amazon,

Well, the plan was to pick up the Bayou today, we both had time to meet,

I wake up this morning, swallowing over a big lump in my throat and and I can't breath or talk. I feel somewhat better now but we didn't meet up.😩

Everyone I know is all banged up with a cold or some shit.  Hope ya feel better. I found a few bikes this week that I’m going to look at. Ones a bayou 300.  Sitting for a while.  Guy wants $750, not happening. The other is a worier 350 not running but a ton of extras and wants $500 to get it gone. He said it’s his sons and been sitting for a few years in a garage.  Going to try and grab both for $1000.  Busy weekend ahead trying to wrap up the one bayou and pick up two more! The wife is going to flip!!!!! 🤷🏻‍♂️

man I hope you get the bayou.. and then put it on a train for $50 to me and I'll cover your time replacing the plug and test driving for me :D for what I paid with my mickey mouse'd (damn near duct taped) '93 300... my wife would at least understand the economic thought process!

how are you finding these, craigslist seems limited and others I spend more time figuring out how to search local areas and then the bikes and usually end up with makeup ads.

@pokerl0w Too much Cervesa lol it’s all good.  I read the email alert and seen your original post 🥴

I actually missed out on that bike.  I was going last Saturday to look at it both of the bikes and by the time Saturday came around it was gone.   The guy let it go for $600 bucks.  I should have moved faster on it and I usually do! Shame on me. But if it was a 4x4 I would have gotten in my truck the second I found It.  I once found a Honda fourtrax at 9 pm, the guy just posted it that night.  I called him and said how much so he said make an offer.  So I said $100 as a joke and he responds and says can I do $125 😳 I said yes but I need to pick it up right now.  He said fine! Hence I found a 2001 Honda fourtrax 4x4 for $125. (Not running)   I spend a considerable amount of time and have learned where and how to look for bikes as well as having alerts sent to my phone whenever certain posts go up. I put a lot of time in.   Some posts are fake and scams and most are real.  I’ve learned to spot the fakes straight away.

But one other thing.  I also know the value of a bike as a part out.  That bayou would have made me my money back just in plastics and metal racks.   I am looking everywhere every day and always come across these bikes.  That’s how I do it !

I have a new 2020 cforce 600 touring and read how smooth the shifting was on it. Mine however, sticks in gear quite often and only after moving the bike around does it finally shift. I use the brakes before shifting as it says but that doesn't seem to affect it either way. Anyone have this issue? Is there an adjustment on the linkage perhaps? Any suggestions are appreciated. The machine is new with about 10 miles on it.

So i have an old yamaha bear tracker that was given to me from an old farmer I know. I decided to refurbished it and fix all the quick fixes on it. I am pretty sure that it is either a 1999 or 2000 based upon the original wiring harness. Little did i know when I bought a new to me wiring harness from ebay that it was from a 2003 or 2004. My question to everyone is do I need to have all the stop switch assemblies hooked up? I think there are three on the 03/04 models and only one on the 1999 to 2000. Any help I can get for this would be great. I haven't run it yet due to the motor and crankcase is in two totes.

The clutch cover goes on and fits, but the little L chapped arm that has gear slots is concerning me.  It appears it goes to wear the clutch adjust bolts are on the cover.
Is there a specific way to tell how it mounts on the gears in relationship with the basket?
I don't want to deal it up unless it's right

Hey so i sold my 04 rubicon and wanted something new so i went to NC and bought a '13 scrambler 850XP LE EPS.  love it the only issues with it when i bought it were a leak in the front tire and the mice had chewed through one of the spark plug wires.  currently have a substitute hooking the chewed end to the ignition coil so itll run on both cylinders however im having an issue finding a replacement coil wire for it and was wondering if yall had any advice.  i need the longer of the two coil wires and i can only find the shorter one online.  will throw up some pics of it when i can

Hey I have a Kawasaki buyou I put a new carburetor on it and a brand new spark plug coil and still firing up could you know what my problem is anyone please

I had a quad fall in my lap a couple weeks ago. The only things I knew about it was it was a Kawasaki Bayou 220, was in pretty rough shape and was free. I couldn't say no to a fun little project. I've been looking a different ATV forums gathering quite a bit of info and decided this was the one I wanted to join.
Thanks to this forum, I found the VIN under about an inch of mud and cross referenced it to be a '98. It had been sitting outside for at least 5 years and was told it ran when parked, but had no brakes. Squirrels or mice had been chewing on the handlebar controls and it's generally just kind of beat up.
So far, I've gone through the carb (not near as bad as I expected), freed up the brakes (will probably need new cables), replaced the spark plug, air filter, petcock and put a new battery in it.
The gas tank had been empty and looked clean so I put some fresh gas in it and tried to crank it today. I got a neutral light, but the starter button did nothing. I tried pull-starting it and it wouldn't fire. I checked the plug and wasn't getting a spark. I started digging and found some potential issues and some definite problems.
I have a wiring diagram I found on here but it's just a picture or scan out of a book and hard to read. I don't see a reference to a black/yellow wire, which is my first problem.
First, it that a factory crimp? One of those wired looks like it goes to the connector in the 2nd pic. Is that just a spade lug type connector? I pulled on it with some needle nose pliers but it didn't seem to want to come off. In the 3rd pic, should there be a fourth wire?
I've read through and bookmarked the threads Andrew Baker and Arizona have going but I figured I needed to start with these obvious issues first. I have lots of pictures, so if there is something else you want to see, just ask. If I don't already have a pic, I'll take one.
