2004 Arctic Cat 400 has high voltage at coil

I have been working on a 2004 arctic cat 400 that will run for a while with a new coil installed then after a few min start sputtering and quit. Checking the coil afterward it it is burned up. There is 350 Plus volts going to the coil and I'm not sure if I need a CDI or its something else? Flywheel magnets have been ruled out!

These are from a 2007 400 service manual, but I would think it would apply to your machine.

You need a meter that can measure peak voltage and hold it. If you are using a regular multimeter, your voltage reading is not valid.

Should it be reading this voltage without cranking the engine over?

No it shouldn't, I would check your pickup coil, it tells the CDI when to fire a spark. If that is good, then the CDI is defective.

Start the machine and measure the voltage at the battery, rev it up a bit, should not exceed 14.5 volts.

      Unfortunately I didn't notice some of the rust hitting the undercarriage of my 2004 Yamaha Grizzly 660, but saw it the other day when I was doing some maintenance, oil change, air filter, spark plug, etc. The left side footrest broke and that's causing the plastic to hit the front wheel. It broke right at the welds from too much rust. Looks to me like what I need is (looked this up on yamahapartshouse.com):
      YAMAHA FOOTREST BOARD 5KM-27481-10 Left side (broken)
      YAMAHA FOOTREST BOARD 5KM-27488-10-00 Right side (rusted and will probably break eventually)

       
      Does anyone have a less expensive source? I did see on ebay a couple of listings but it still comes out to @ $50 each,

      So this '02 Taurus with only 87k miles on her starts right up every time multiple times a day except for twice in the last 3 weeks. The first time was 3 weeks ago and the second was today. It happened the same both times. Turn the key and stop to let the pump prime, then when I turn to the start position the engine turns real slow and sort of in fits. Usually when a battery is low the engine turns slow but in rhythm. During my 2 starts the engine barely seemed to turn and the crankshaft rpm seemed to vary. On both starting events I let off the key and tried to start 2-3 times with rests in between. But then eventually on the 4th try it starts right up just as quickly as a normal start.

      I have No clue as to what might be causing this. Only thing I know to do is, next time it does this to put a voltage meter on the battery to see if it's weak. Actually though, because both events the engine ended up starting up like normal that would indicate something other than the batt. Electrically this car is a little odd though. The interior light never comes on when the doors are opened, for years, and then last week it comes on twice when one of the rear doors is opened.

      Pushing the start button the engine turns and will forever without starting. But if I use the kick start it will start with one or two kicks everytime, any idea as to what is going on. New good battery and coil, I'm ready to try anything. It's a great bike, but this is getting anoying. Thank you.

      Ok, so I had no spark issues and foundy coil was bad. Bought a caltric coil, put it on and fired right up...for bout 20 minutes then it backfired once and again, no spark. I put it on my buddies 300 and it runs.  Checked my cdi the same thing, but still no spark. Now I got my old coil and  was ohming it and got reading of .01 on primary and 11.89 from POS to plug ( meter set on 20k ) new coil reads same primary but 12.83. what gives? It tests bad but runs my buddies 300, helllllllpppp

      Hi there everyone. Just seeing if there is advice on a problem I have before I start digging too deep. 
      I recently bought this creally nice 2004 King quad ltf300 with only 2400km..
      Everything things works great except when engaged into 4wd or diff lock it has a clicking noise ( sounds like broken teeth etc) are the front diffs known to blow?  Or the transfer from engine?
      I am yet to test on some loose ground to see if I'm getting drive at front .
      I will be driving in to find problem in next few weeks but thought I'd see if anyone might know what it is first. Cheers
