Recommended Posts

picking up atv tomorrow, guys says motor is locked up. he thinks, anyway has been sitting for more than three years. Please understand i have not touched it yet but if his description is accurate im looking for suggestions on freeing it up before  having to tear it down. I'm hoping to get some great info from the pros on Quadcrazy.

Okay. With locked up motors can mean a few things. Stuck piston from no oil. Bad crank. Blown apart trans and so on. Your best bet is to look at the oil that's in it. Look for metal shavings in the oil. That's as simple as taking the drain plug out and fill the bottom of a regular plastic cup and inspect. If that checks out then pour a little bit of oil in the sp hole. Let is soak and move it till it frees up. This might take some time. Third is the dogbone. That might be seized. And 4th. Bad bearings on the crank.

I had a badly seized engine a while ago, leaving diesel to soak in the bores is probably the best advice and then hopefully it should be able to release it, providing there isn't too much water ingress!

Good luck!

Diesel the best? Why not a penetrating lubricanct like pb blaster or such.

If the cylinder is seized bad will it not need new rings as a minimum?

      So I bought a 2001 Quad Runner 250 for my son/wife. Sorry I run a Grizzly 660.
I’ve rode it many times with no issue.
My son’s first time out, I could always hear him but feeling he ran it red line in first gear a lot.
So this is what it was doing during/end of the 2-3 hour ride:
      - halfway though noticed smoke (oil) coming from front of the motor sort of under exhaust manifold. Once back at the truck, it was really noticeable. Definitely oil burning off. I’m thinking from the top end maybe.
      So quick inspection:
      - No leaks or seepage of oil that I could see
      - I pulled the plug and it’s black but not wet
      - No blue/white smoke in exhaust
      - seems to still ride fine
      - Engine still has plenty of oil
But now that I’m looking at it back at the house - it’s a hard/won’t start when hot. It starts right up cold no problem but once it stalls when hot, have to let it sit for 10-15 before it will start again.
It wasn’t idling before that trip so I jacked up the idle a bit as well but I think that’s a carb clean/adjustment but...
      Any input is appreciated.
      Thanks for any help.

I'm doing some work at my house this spring and will need to rake out about 1/2 an acre of ground because the fill comes with rocks and such. Has anyone used a rake they like or created something cool that works? Home depot has a Kolpin for $275.

Need help with teardown of 2001 Bayou 220.  New to atv's but not to mechanical work.  I was given this ATV and went to turn engine over by pull rope and the engine is locked up.  Pulled spark plug no change.  Was going to tear down top end.  Any suggestions or tricks before I proceed?

I just bought a Sunl 2007 250 2x4 ATV and am going change oil in motor and rear end, any recommendations for products and instructions, as I have no owners manual. Oil is probably pretty simple and am guessing rear end is pump out and refill. Some specs would be nice to amounts of fluids.
      Thanks.
