Hello all, wanted to sign up for this site as I am sure I will have lots of questions soon. One of my coworkers has given me a free Bayou 220 that does not run, I was told it needs a new wiring harness, however I cannot confirm any of that yet.

Next weekend I am going to drive up to the place and pick it up and get some hands on but right now trying to find some service manuals so that I can trace and find out what is going on. My plan is if I can get it to run to do a full restoration and use it to putt around the trails around my house.

I have some experience with small engines, currently have six mini bikes and a buggy with a GY6 motor that I brought back to life and I am hoping I can do that same with this. Really hoping the Bayou has good compression and it's only a electrical problem.

In the mean time I am going to be reading this forum to learn as much as I can and hopefully find a service manual. I have attached the only pic I have of it so far.

Thanks!
Daniel

Thank you, for the price of free I could not say no to this.  I just hope the wiring is salvageable and it won't take too much $$$ to get it going.

Finding parts for a 99 is getting hard, Rocky Mountain ATV has some things but this will definitely be an adventure.

Thanks.

Welcome to Quadcrazy, chances are unless you see burnt or melted wiring then the harness is probably fine.   The only way one would burn up a harness is by installing a battery in backwards.  Very possible but it’s a far and few thing to see. But even at that most of the time it’s a fuseable link or main fuse that goes.

We have had plenty of bayous come thru here in a past few months and all were salvageable and the outcome was good.  Including one of mine. I picked one up where the previous owner said the same thing. Big electrical problems.  Turned out it was a safety switch that was bad.  So get familiar with the bike, take some of the basic stuff off to expose some of the wiring and start looking for anything burnt.   My guess is it will be the usual suspect which is the  (neural safety switch) or a faulty kill switch.  Order a new battery if needed and try to avoid jumping it with a car or a crazy strong jumper pack.

The bike looks great otherwise so for the price 🤭hey you cant complain!

The plastics alone are worth a few hundred bucks if the bike was beyond repair.

I will definitely know more once I pick it up, which right now should happen weekend after next if everything goes according to plan.  The coworker that is giving this away is pretty clueless when it comes to machinery so who knows what it really is.  All I know that it no longer wants to starts, which was four years ago... since then it just sat in the garage collecting dust.

You can also find ATV Manuals on Amazon.
Here is my list, some I have had, some I got online
I have put all Manuals on my dedicated server, so the links won't go dead. Most the manuals listed below are on the server and there may be some on the server that's not on the list. Scroll to the bottom of this post to get the link.
If you need a Manual that's not on the list, leave a reply, I will try to locate it, if I can't, I'm sure another member would share if they have it.
If you have manuals that are not in the list and you would like to share them, leave a reply, with a link to your manuals and I will add them to my post so they are all in one spot.
      Thank you, and enjoy

Back again with another headache, maybe you guys can help me out.
Picked up a 87 Bayou 300 not running of course, all stator wires melted
on the motor and also no spark. I checked the pick up coil ohmed out good.
traced the wires and led to no cdi box, yes missing. So ordered it and while waited
fixed the stator wires, had to wire direct to harness. Get the cdi installed and after a lot
of other things started it up. Battery dead so used a batt charger to start it. Now when i shut
off the charger the motor died. So i check charging voltage...nada. I see voltage regulator is
old and catalist leaking so i replaced it. Same thing no charge. I check stator and no voltage
with it unpluged from harness while running. Soooooo i replace stator. Now Stator wires have
23v and up to over 50v at higher rpms. So i know its charging now. Connect everything back up and
no charge voltage at battery! Still dies when i shut off charger. All 3 yellow stator wires have good voltage, checked
harness from stator to regulator and is good. The white wire has battery voltage at regulator, the brown wire has battery
voltage at regulator when key on. The Black/yellow stripe has good ground. I get 3 volts at battery when i shut off charger.
If i connect old regulator i get 7 volts when i shut off charger. Do i have a defective new regulator? Im stumped. when i
figure this one out i have a big wiring problem on another one ill let you in on.  Az

Just was given a 220 bayou, turns over and was wired by a crazy mouse on drugs helped by a committee of politicians taking advice from lil green folk from Mars! This is going to be fun. Claimed the stator was bad. My other project is an old lakota, died driving with no spark and has sat for a bit due to building a house n life! In other words,I may need lots of advice!

Hello everyone! I recently purchased this quad for a mere 300.00 and it is pretty clean for the year. I bought it from a guy who bought it in a storage unit. He didn’t know anything about it. I got it home and noticed it did not have an ignition coil for the spark plug. I bought the ignition coil, a new battery, new CDI box, new starter relay, new safety neutral relay, new carb and so on... I got it to turn over, but when I pull the plug and check for spark I have nothing.. it has a non factory starter button that works when I push it and turns the engine over no matter if the key or stop switch is on or off..not sure what that’s all about, but it does turn over..just no spark at the plug. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Everyone - Need some help.
Got a nice little 220...clean machine. wiring is a mess. I have a diagram however, the one I have has 4 wires coming from the ignition switch not 2 like mine. So, I cant trace wires properly.
There is a white one that runs to the Solenoid, and a brown wire...from the Ignition...I dont know where its supposed to go. Also, on the Solenoid, there are 3 wires..W to ignition, B to start relay and B/Y runs up to the front of the machine...and is not plugged into anything...and there isnt a "Mate" missing it. How do they plug into the 4 open shovels by the 20A fuse?
I'm pretty sure my Lights and start switch/Lights are correct.
Problem I cant get anything...new battery...cant get the start button to work, cant get any power to the lights or switches...so I know something is not grounded or..
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had a quad fall in my lap a couple weeks ago. The only things I knew about it was it was a Kawasaki Bayou 220, was in pretty rough shape and was free. I couldn't say no to a fun little project. I've been looking a different ATV forums gathering quite a bit of info and decided this was the one I wanted to join.
Thanks to this forum, I found the VIN under about an inch of mud and cross referenced it to be a '98. It had been sitting outside for at least 5 years and was told it ran when parked, but had no brakes. Squirrels or mice had been chewing on the handlebar controls and it's generally just kind of beat up.
So far, I've gone through the carb (not near as bad as I expected), freed up the brakes (will probably need new cables), replaced the spark plug, air filter, petcock and put a new battery in it.
The gas tank had been empty and looked clean so I put some fresh gas in it and tried to crank it today. I got a neutral light, but the starter button did nothing. I tried pull-starting it and it wouldn't fire. I checked the plug and wasn't getting a spark. I started digging and found some potential issues and some definite problems.
I have a wiring diagram I found on here but it's just a picture or scan out of a book and hard to read. I don't see a reference to a black/yellow wire, which is my first problem.
First, it that a factory crimp? One of those wired looks like it goes to the connector in the 2nd pic. Is that just a spade lug type connector? I pulled on it with some needle nose pliers but it didn't seem to want to come off. In the 3rd pic, should there be a fourth wire?
I've read through and bookmarked the threads Andrew Baker and Arizona have going but I figured I needed to start with these obvious issues first. I have lots of pictures, so if there is something else you want to see, just ask. If I don't already have a pic, I'll take one.
