1999 Artic Cat 500 ATV bogs down and backfires

Gas is new, plug is new.  It first backfired in 3rd gear going about 15mph. I changed the plug right away, didn't help, the plug was quite black when I changed it.

It idles a little rough and when I try to rev it up it starts backfiring.  It had been running great all fall.

Only thing I can think of on the simple side would be a dirty carburetor or stuck choke, maybe poor fuel delivery from the tank. 

Second thing would be electrical. The spark could be breaking down so it could be a bad rectifier or ignition coil, maybe water inside the kill switch or ignition switch, a break in the wire harness maybe where you have an intermittent short. You can do some easy testing  on some of the electrical  parts other then the cdi. 
 

lastly I would check the timing to make sure it hasn’t jumped a tooth or two on the cam sprocket.  Based on the backfiring it’s a symptom of timing but hit the simple stuff first before you start digging deep.  

Honestly and I don’t want to sound repetitive we have had members here that swore the gas was fine and the plug was good and after a second look it turned out to be just that.

      Timberwolf 250 starting issue

      Hi all. I have a timberwolf 250 2nd that will not start.. I thought it was out of time bc the guy I got it from said it just quit on him. The tensioner had a nut welded to it and it was like2 teeth off. I installed new tensioner and chain and it still will not start. It has fire and it will not hit off brake cleaner. It has compression. Haven't put a gauge but I'm sure it will crank and run with what it has. I double checked my work and it's still in time. Spot on. Both valves move. I'm about to put a feeler gauge on them and I'll cone back but other than that any ideas?

      Hi All.  I introduced myself some weeks ago with my 2006 LT-F400F that needed a list of repairs including replacing the cracked generator cover.  It is back together as of last night and cranks up, idles and revs high pretty well.  Needs some fine tuning and stop backfiring at stop.
      The big issue is it will not go into gear.  I reassembled the insides with help from y’all’s posts.  The transfer selector moves from H-L-R, and the foot shifter moves thru the gears and finds neutral easily enough.  Before I tear it back open, the  transfer selector on top does not move as far as the repair manual says.  The diagram shows the shaft moving something like 40 degrees between L and H and 50+ degrees between L and R but it doesn’t move that far even though it finds the indent areas and moves well.  
      Could this be the problem.  I aligned all the dots on the shifter gears inside and it appeared to not be binding anywhere.  I do hear the gears touching when I shift like they are trying to engage, but zero movement from the ARV
      It was somewhat difficult to tell whether all the parts are installed on each shaft.
      Are there better/bigger photos somewhere that would allow me to be confident I included all the washers and bushings, etc?  If I had any doubt on parts that were laying inside after the cover broke then I purchased replacements from online stores.
      TIA for any input or feedback!!  Pics are from when I first took the generator cover off.

      04 Suzuki Eiger 400 Starting Issues & More

      I'm currently working on an 04 Suzuki Eiger 400 and ran into some issues. Main issue being it's really hard to start. Once I get it started, it runs bad. Sounds like it's missing, which I'm pretty sure is an idle issue. It's not my 4 wheeler. I'm working on it for a buddy. Someone started working on the original carb and 2 jets were missing when I got it to work on.
      So, I ordered a new carb. To get it to run, I had to adjust the throttle screw on the handle bar almost all of the way out. Even doing that, it still sounds like it's bogging down and missing. 
      I did put a gas filter on it, which I'm questioning whether or not that's the issue and it's not getting enough gas like it should. The petcock only has an On, Reserve, and Prime option. It also has 2 ports. I guess I have the hoses hooked up right. There's no way to shut the gas off completely, and also it looks like there's no gas getting thru unless I run it on Prime. Reserve drips gas. I'm going to take it apart today and clean it. I'm also going to take the jets I need out of the new carb and put in the old one. 
      I don't know what all this person did you the 4 wheeler before I got it. There's odds and ends missing that I've noticed so far. What else can I try or look for? What could be the gas issue with the carb and petcock? The carb was completely off the bike except hanging onto the throttle cable. The diagram I found for the carb doesn't help me with hose placements. Any help, or questions would be appreciated. I can attach photos if it would be of help.

      2007 Hond fore 500 4x4 es trouble after top end rebuild

      I rebuilt the top end on my 2007 Honda Trx500fe. It ran fine right after the rebuilt. But now when I try to crank it it blows Bach through the carburetor. I held my hand over the opening for the intake air and it blew gas back on my hand. Can figure out what happened all of a sudden. It was cranking and was able to ride it running through all the gears. Now can get it to crank just blowing gas back to the air filter. Need help again. Starting to think I should have walked away from this one.
