2011 Sportsman 500 belt replacement Polaris

Recommended Posts

Well its finally happened, its time to replace the belt on my 2011 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O.   Is there anything specific i need to know before getting into it? Is there one brand of belt i should get over another?   I'm still on my first Polaris and plan to keep it at least another 8 years.

Did you replace it yet?

You can go OEM or aftermarket like Gates:

Polaris Genuine Accessories 06-13 Polaris SPORTS500H Polaris Engineered Heavy Duty Drive Belt

Gates aftermarket:

Thank you kindly for the help. I did go to my nearest Polaris dealer and got the one used by the factory. It was $87 and maybe i could have saved some money?

With the new belt all i can say is so far so good. I've put around 15 or 20 miles with the new one and yesterday i certainly felt the moment it started to break in. It felt and sounded just like when it was brand new when i could hear it going down hill with no throttle.   I've yet to run high range as to try following the rules of breaking it in.  If anything i should've replaced it a couple years sooner. Though my four wheeler isn't used all that rough compared to many or most people?

That's one of the best looking used belts I've eve seen!  As far as replacing them, I blow my belts before i change them.  I tried changing the belt in my 04 sportsman 500 once and couldn't tell any difference.  Sense, I blew the belt on my 07 sportsman 800 and put the 15 yr old belt off the 500 in the 700 been running great ever since.

I see no need to replace belts till they're in little chucks(it blew).  As for which belt to get, it just needs to be for your model and year.  I bought a $40 belt off Amazon and it works as well or better than oem.

The big no-ons to avoid are letting water into the clutches (gets wet and slips) and sitting the atv for years (belt dry rots)

What amazed me is that there wasn't any chunks. However the belt did get to the point that it would just smoke and the four wheeler would barely move on level ground.  In fact i had to toss the old one on the ground a few feet away to make sure i didn't put it back on. i was in shock that the old one was worn out but it must have been as the new one made a huge difference.   my best guess is that it had stretched quite a bit.   thanks for the help everyone.

So i took a road trip today to look at a Suzuki Eiger! 2006 in perfect condition other then the fact it starts for 30 seconds and shuts down.
Its been sitting for about a year in a shed.
It has a plow and a winch included!!!
Got it for a really good price and all looks good so far.

      Stay tuned.

So few months ago I acquired a 01 Explorer 4x4 (think its a 350 but not sure)
Anyway the owner said it started reving very high, shut the key off and still kept running
until finally he shut off fuel and it finally died. During the run away he said the exhaust got
red hot and has melted plastics to prove it. Said some thing flew out the tail pipe, I kinda figured
it was the top of the piston. Anyway finally got around to looking at it (have a lot of other projects in the works)
and checked the compression, Shows about 40 psi. Can hear air coming out the carb while rotating the motor over.
Gonna pull it apart eventually, don't hear any noises or binding in the stroke, You think the piston came apart?
any horror stories of these and is it worth my effort and money? Don't really have any money in it yet. Thoughts? Az

I have a 2011 850 Sportsman.  Has been absolutely trouble free except for 1 thing. I am on my 4th. ignition switch. I don't know if it's that they are all chinese junk or what.  It gets to a point  when you turn the key and it will act like the battery is going bad. Cranks real slow or not at all. Put a new switch in and its fine. New one will last 1 1/2 - 2 years and its junk. I've had the Polaris brand and after market. As a matter of fact the original one lasted the lest amount of time.  Other than that it's been a perfect machine . No electrical problems. No battery problems. Just curious if anyone else has had the same issue.

I have a 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500. The Speedometer got water inside of it and it sat for a long time. So now that speedometer is trashed to say the least and i need to find a replacement. I don't want to put up the cash for an oem one so i was wondering if anyone knew any good speedometers out there i could use. I've found many speedometers i like but don't know how i'd wire it up without the same connection points. Thanks, any input is appreciated

I've already posted here once about this ATV. Lots of people suggested i check the cam and after a couple months i finally got around to attacking it. I got it all apart and got the cam/rockers out. I'm almost positive they need to be replaced, they're pretty scored up and don't look too hot. Just wanted some final opinions before i drop the money on it. I'll also take feedback on the new cam i've chosen.

Has anyone had any luck putting a different gauge on this machine. Would you happen to have the wiring diagram?

Just bought this ATV. Wondering if my gauge from a 2003 will plug in and work. I know mine does not have a fuel gauge, but if the rest works, I am in.
