I'm new to the forum but have a bit of experience with older suzuki atv's.  I have a 1985 Suzuki Lt250ef, it is a good machine when it works, the first issue I had with mine was that somebody put the wrong carburetor on it beacuse they got one from amazon that was "universal" but it barely fit and didn't work at all.  I found an original carburetor, the way to know if it is the right one is original carburetors for this model have the remote choke thing on the side of the carburetor.  After I got that fixed it had low compression so I did a top end rebuild on it.  I got a original suzuki gasket and piston rings.  I only had about $100 into it at that point because I got every thing off ebay.  Then after the rebuild it had inconsistant spark, one day it would have spark the next day it wouldn't.  I found the issue to be the pickup coil, I looked and a whole stator was $500 so I looked up suzuki pickup coil and it looked the same so I just spliced the wires and used that one and it seemed to work, besides the first time i put it in upside down and had to take it apart again and flip it.  After I did all that it ran great and ended up with like $130 into it.  If you have any questions about it ask, I don't have a manual but I do have a wiring diagram so if you need that I can post a picture of it.

To see if it's going to start you take the spark plug out and check if it's got spark. If it has then you put petrol in, apply the choke and try to start it.

If it starts then warm it up and try driving it and check the running.

If it doesn't start after a few minutes of trying, then you take the spark plug out again and see if it's wet or dry. If it's dry then you need to check fuel's getting to the carby, by loosening the drain bung at the bottom of the carby if it has one, or pulling the fuel pipe off the carby and checking fuel's getting that far. If the spark plug\s wet but it didn't start then turn the choke off and have another go at trying it. If it still doesn't start, turn the fuel tap off and keep trying to start it. If it doesn't start after a few minutes of trying then pull the spark plug again and check again whether it is wet or dry, and if it still has spark. If it tries to start after a bit of cranking with the choke and the fuel tap off, then it probably needs a bit of careful juggling of the throttle, and trying the fuel tap on and then off till it catches and gains revs.. Just keep on checking if the plugs getting fuel, and that it's not soaked in fuel, and turning the fuel and choke on or off depending on how it is. When they haven't been going for a while you often have to carefully coax them into life with careful throttle application, generally just giving them small amounts of throttle till they start to try and run, then holding the throttle at that position till it clears itself and revs up.

Let us know how you get on with those two checks, (spark and fuel), and we can talk you through what to do next.

      Hey everybody,

My proficiency is with Hondas and Yamahas make me see RED!

This bike is my brother in law's, it has 1199 miles on it and went from running great to dead with no start. Every once and a while it will start and sputter for 2 seconds. It is extremely sporadic when it fires but never runs for longer than 3 seconds.

      Here is where we sit:
      Brand New Fully Charged battery
Carb was cleaned with air hose and carb cleaner then into the ultrasonic cleaner with Aircraft aluminum cleaner
New Shindy Carb kit (made in Japan version)
Cleaned out petcock and gas tank
      New 93 Non Ethanol Gas
      New Spark Plug

It gets a spark through the spark test light every time
      Bluish white spark
When holding the spark plug 1/4" - 3/8" away from head it will jump and spark to the head
      Good Compression

      Here are the readings:

Pickup Coil 519 Ohms (range 459-561)
Charging Coil 266 Ohms (range 270-330)
      Lighting Coil 0.700 (range 0.702-0.858)
Spark plug Cap 10.58 Ohms (10kohms
Ignition Coil Primary Coil 0.5 ohms (range 0.18-0.28 ohms)
Ignition Coil Secondary Coil 8.20 kOhms (range 6.32-9.48 kOhms)

Would y'all think stator and pick up coil, rectifier or CDI are the culprit?

I just saw a video on TikTok where some guy took the rear end off an ATV and bolted on a roto tiller in place of rear wheels. I wish i saved that video to post here....good thing it was 4 wheel drive...lol but, it seemed to work.
I'm not sure how he made it bolt on to the drive....

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.
