  • Admin changed the title to Timing on a 1988 suzuki quadrunner lt4wd 250

Take the inspection bolt out of the left side of the case so you can see the timing marks on the flywheel.  Line the timing mark with the indicator inside that opening.  The cam should have dots or some type of mark on them that you line with the head.

The marks are on the sprocket I think. The cam needs to have the sprocket dowel at about the eleven oclock position, then you turn it till the sprocket marks are level with the head surface.

I just changed the stator on my 1998 Suzuki 250 quad and now it wont start.  I am also looking for a way to check or adjust timing but cant find anything in my manual.  The stator only went on one way so not sure what could be off now.  Any  ideas would be very helpful and appreciated.

I could use the marks to set the timing if everything was taking apart. I was wondering if there was a way to adjust the timing without taking everything apart.  I was able to get the Quad running, the problem was a bad connection from the new Stator Wire to the existing plastic connection. The new part had a slightly different connection and wasnt making proper contact. I cut off the old Stator connectors and spliced them to the new wires and everything worked fine except my quad is still running the same. Starts and idles fine but has no power and the engine seems to misfire when I try to give it gas.

Not easy to set timing without the bottom cover and cam covers off but yes I have done it before. I do no recoment doing this because you might or might not get it right. First determine if the timing is off by lining the marks up. If they are off in either direction by one or more cam shaft chain links then it is out of time. You then determine witch way you need to move the timing and turn the crank until the marks on the crank lines up. Remove the timing chain tensioner so you have slack in the timing chain. Remove the cam sprocket slip chain over sprocket until marks line up while keeping the chain tight on the side opposite of the tensioner side then turn the cam to the position where the sprocket will line up with cam and mount sprocket back to cam then replace tensioner(The tensoiner can affect the time when setting if your chain is worn) and check to make sure it is in time. Repeat this if it is not in time. Like I said it is not easy to do.
There is many things that can cause this other than timing.
1. Fuel air mixture is off. Bad or misadjusted carb.
2. Valves set to tight.
3 Airfilter not connected (has to be installed for machine to run correctly.)
4. Bad spark plug
5. Bad coil (not firing hot enough)
6. Bad CDI module (Ignition module)
7. Timing off one notch.
8. Stator ignition sensor not positioned in correct position(most unlikely unless an after market stator was used and it positioned wrong from factory)
9. Cam worn not opening valves enough.
10 Exaust system clogged not allowing proper exaust.
11 low compression.

So understand it is hard to say just what the problem is so trial and error is the only method you have of detemining what the probelm is.

here are 2 dashes on the camshaft, i lined them up even with the head and had the timing mark lined up in the inspection hole on the crankcase.

Since they show from what you say then it is in time.

I'm in the middle of repairing damage from the chain coming off of this from the previous owner. (I learned this is somewhat common on these for various reasons.)
What are you guys using to either help keep the chain correct and on the sprocket or guarding your engine in the case that it comes off / breaks?
Is there an upgraded guard that can bolt around the sprocket in replacement of the currently broken OEM alluminum?

As the title says, I've got a crankcase full of fuel / oil to deal with and figure I'll just start from the top and move through the system.  Going to start with a rebuild of the petcock and then the carb if the problem isn't fixed with the petcock rebuild.  I figure I'll go with a Moose kit unless others with experience recommend another brand (All Balls, etc.)
      Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Just picked up an 84 LT185 ATV, I understand there was an accessory add  on that gave it electric start, anyone have any info about that kit?

Hi all.  New to the forum & quads.  Seems like a great place full of info.
I just recently picked up a 2005 Suzuki KingQuad LTA700.  I need a battery.  I've been reading up on conventional vs AGM types.  I have a Royal Distributing and Canadian Tire.  RD has 2 types avail for my year/Model a battery YTX16-BS CRANK $75, and BATTERY YTX20CH-BS YUASA $140.  Neither of these is the type from the manual FTZ16-BS.
from what I can tell... I think the only difference is the capacity with the $75 unit rated at 14 AH/10HR and the $140 unit rated at 18 AH/10HR ... which is the rating in the manual for the FTZ16-BS.  How much does this make a difference for nearly x2 the cost?
And about the models/type numbers.... what is important to know ... they all end in "-BS" but are the other details relevant or just manufacturer naming?
