I bought a used Axis 500 2021 model. It makes a clanking noise when I am going down hill idling. It feels like it is trying to downshift without the clutch pushed in. I am new to this and to this group. I just need to know what to look for.

thanks

If the clanking's a metallic sound, I'd be checking the axle's universals I think. If it's something like a uj it would sound quite clear, but if it was in the gearbox then it would be a bit muffled and in a different direction. If it was trying to jump gears, having a hand on the gear change might give some indication.. it would jump.

You should be able to identify where the sounds coming from a bit better if you lean and/or turn towards all four corners or the drive belt/transmission as it's making the noise. Perhaps get someone else to drive while you clamber around and lean over the sides..haha.. It's what mechanics do..

Given the "clanking" description I'd check out metal to metal contacts before taking the belt covers off. I haven't had much experience with belt drives though and Gw may know they can make quite clanking noises..

TonyWright-did you ever confirm specifically what the issue was?  I have a 1 year old Axis 500 that seems like it is having the same issue.  Engine makes a rattling noise when coasting downhill (no throttle).  87 hours on the machine-I changed the oil and filter around 50 hours as recommended with oil for wet clutch.  This is my third issue with the machine...already replaced driveshaft and fuel injector...really frustrated

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I'm trying to help a buddy out with his bike (he's not really on the internet or familiar with these forums) and I'll admit that I am not super familiar with the transmission and clutches in these bikes. I owned a Brute a few years ago, but never had an issue like this that I had to troubleshoot.
So basically my buddy bought a group lot of 650's to build one good bike out of. He got it all put together and has it running but when he pushes on the throttle the clutch doesn't engage till the RPM's are quite high and even when its moving it doesn't really speed up, almost seems like its in "limp mode". He's tried 2 different transmissions so I don't think that's the problem.
Is there any adjustment on the clutch engagement? Anything else I can tell him to look at? Let me know if you need anymore information if you think you can help.

I like to ride in wooded and grassy areas. It takes my mind off the everyday routines and helps me deal with my father's cancer. Also gives me a reason to get involved with forums like this one.

I’m brand new to 4 wheelers and just bought a 1987 Yamaha Moto 4 350. It has good compression and fuel, but no spark. I’ve looked high and low trying to find how to test all the components of the ignition system, but can’t find anything. This has a new CDI box on it, but I suspect it might be the stator. How do I test the stator on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
