97 Magnum 425 - Motor locks up with plug in but fine when out??

Just bought a non-running 425 Magnum 6x6. Guy said previous owner had motor rebuilt (3 years ago or so.) It reportedly ran great but recently the electric start began failing and he put a new recoil on it which he broke immediately.

I get it home and put a new recoil on it and the pull is incredibly hard....so much so that I think I'm going to break the new recoil assembly. I also installed a new starter which won't roll it over either.

I'm thinking maybe a hydro-locked situation so I pull the plug and the motor rolls over fine with both pull start and electric start. The cylinder was dry however.

Checked the valve lash and it was right on at .0006".

Checked the compression relief spring on the end of the cam and the spring was strong and keeps the metal piece against the dowel like it should. The cam lobes look good from what I can see.

I have a small camera that I dropped into the cylinder. Could t get a pic of the entire chamber because of the angled engine but there are marks on the center piston and a couple of grooves once side of the piston top. I will include the photo.

Anyway....I'm at a total loss at this point. Not sure how to proceed and diagnose. Would sure appreciate anyone's help who might know what the heck is going on! I was able to get it to turn over about 5 times with electric start with compression tester installed which read 145 lbs. I don't know what else to do!

In some of the manuals for those things they have a maximum compression reading listed. Apparently, that's the maximum it should have for an easy start if the de-compressor is working. It shouldn't be higher than that figure if the decomp is working as it should.

Have you read what it should be for that bike ?

Perhaps the decomp isn't working.. perhaps there is wear..

The engine was rebuilt a couple years ago and I can tell that is true by having gone through as much as I have so far. Looking at the loabes of cam through the rockers....they are pristine. Going to watch the ball bearing today to see if there is any movement in the decompression ball bearing when I that metal piece away from the dowel.
I am not sure what the max compression should be.......can't find it anywhere.

I've looked in a couple of books and they seem to expect no more than 90lbs if the decomp is working right..

You still haven't confirmed that it will turn over if you leave the plug slightly loose and turn it slow enough for the compression to escape..  That will prove it's only compression and not anythng mechanical.

At 145 your compression valve is not working, mech is right about the 85-90 # , maybe it didnt get back together right after the rebuild, I would still think the starter should turn it over, if you put oil down in the cylinder does that help it turn over at all,

I'm sorry, completely forgot to respond to that question. Yes, it turned over a bit easier with the plug loose.

Ok.......figured out that the spring for the decompression was on so that the opposite side of that metal piece was against the dowel. It shouldn't have made any difference when starting, o ly when running. I corrected it. Also discovered that the fuel pump is not working so it wasn't getting any gas at all. I bypassed it direct to carb. I hit the starter and it fired right up and idled. Took it for a test drive and it runs great. Go figure??! I do have an oil leak somewhere though. Will have to sort that out.

Sorry, I forgot to answer that question Mech. Yes, it turned a little easier with the spark plug a little loose.

I also realized that during the rebuild, someone put the decompression spri g on wrong and it was holding the wrong side of the metal piece against the dowel. I corrected that. The motor still turned hard.

Also discovered that the fuel pump is garbage. I bypassed it and ran directly from tank. I put it back together and hit the starter......it fired right up and idled. Go figure!

Took it for a test drive and it has gobs of power. 6x6 works so I'm almost there.

I do have an oil leak to chase down.

Thanks for hanging with through this......certainly was different!19f0d1aab0fc2826d34e89218eb13747.jpg

Hi Steve.  It's possible, but then other than too much compression, which should get released by a working decomp, it shouldn't cause a problem that only shows up when the plug is in. If the cam timing was out and two valves hit, then yeah it could cause a lockup, or if one valve set hit the piston, yeah it could lock up.. but then it wouldn't matter whether the plug was in or out.. The valves would hit or they wouldn't..

What we need here is someone that has seen a worn or faulty decompressor that can explain what wears or goes wrong with them..

Sorry I suck at these forums so if you see this submitted under update status, my bad. Anyhow this is a new shock for a 96 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 it fits my 96 Yamaha Timberwolf 250 4x4 perfectly. Little narrower are the bottom than the original but everything else is perfect. I extended it to almost a half in from full extension because I’m pushing 350 pounds.  It rides and hold me well. So if any of y'allRace driven shock. have been looking for one and didn’t want to do the research here it is.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

I have been exploring all the options available, so many, its hard to choose. I have kind of narrowed it down to the Honda Pilot, Subaru Outback, and Kind of looking at the Outlander, although its a little small,  the new one is nice looking. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or gripes with any of these rides. I have driven Jeeps for the past 25  years and they have been great, but their price point has gotten to high. Expieriences good or bad would be helpful. Thanks!

If you're new here, tell us who you are, where you're from and what you ride!!!
Lets get to know each other a little better shall we?
I'm not new to the site, obviously, but...
I'm Kristin from Denver!!! I ride a 2008 Yamaha Rhino. She's my muddy baby!!!!!! Several aftermarket parts on her. She's good to me! We try and ride every weekend. This weekend we're off to MOAB! :woot:

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.
