Forgot to say I was told it is a 1998 Yamaha Bigbear 350 4x4. Has a shifter on left side in the fender H/L/R

the rack has a cut out or bend in it to allow the shifter . Hope this helps

I agree late 80s early 90s the 10th digit of the vin would be the year, i couldnt really make it out , great machines, their flagship model at the time, full time 4 wheel drive and a fairly bullet proof engine. They were tough as nails and i liked the mechanical fender shifter better than the newer ones, easier to work on with fewer problems. Hopefully it hasnt been abused too bad , they were ridden hard and neglected a lot.

i found alot of tape in the harness, so i stripped it down so i could see all the connections. it is obvious that someone was in here and made changes so it would run.  i undid what they had done and followed the manual to see what was correct, what was wrong. what i found was a mess. on the start button light switch that is on the quad has 9 wire, but the manual i have says it should have 7. i have a extra red wire and black wire, red spare wire goes to the lights so i think that is power in. just wire it to the other red wire, the black one i need to chase down in the switch, want to verify where it is connected on the handlebar switch. i did buy a after market one on AMAZON, Garbage but it cranks now....   replaced the solenoid for it  was broken. also tested the coil. it was not in spec. so i ordered ma new one. cleaned up the connection points on the frame so when i mounted the coil it would have a good contact clean. put battery to machne , pulled spark plug leaned against head so i can check for spark now.  i ended up with spark, YEAAAAAA.   Put plug back in motor, sprayed carb cleaner a tad in carb tried to start, NOTHING so i pulled the plug put against head again, NO SPARK.   So i have lost spark again, i am going to test the stator to see if it checks out, ohms...... any one have any other ideas to troubleshoot why spark is gone again, i would rather Diagnose then just throw parts at it.   that is a waste of time and money.     appreciate any help

My 1992 TRX00 recently stopped firing.  I understand this is a common problem. I have ordered an aftermarket CDI unit.    TJ

Hey all, new to the forum! I just bought a 1998 Kawasaki bayou 300, 4x4 not running. Initially I found no spark. Ended up playing with the plug wire (made sure plug top and wiring was touching) and got spark yesterday and the quad fired up off ether. Come to work on it today and now no spark again. Before I got spark and now today if I touch the plug after cranking I get shocked, and it will spark after I release the starter button. I was jumping the quad with a freshly charged car battery that has 12v while cranking. Cleaned out the kill switch and ignition button. All looks good. Purchased new plugs. They're are a lot of wires cut/ disconnected. But shouldn't matter if I got spark without them connected...

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

This old boy has been coastal so lots of rust. But when I turn the key, nothing. Green neutral light works, head/tail lights work. Was running fine when I parked it for a few months.. no issues with starter. This did happen once before (last year).. not sure what overcame it.. maybe playing around with gear shifter.. but not sure if that was what did it. But doesn't seem to do anything now when I play around with it while hitting the start button.
I did take apart the handlebar mounted start button housing and looked it over. Couldn't figure anything out there, but looked the same as when I had the problem last year. Put my probes on various wires there but didn't learn anything.. not sure how it is wired.
So this first image there is a connector with 2 wires coming from forward (the male part of connector) - one blue and one blue w/ red stripe. The blue continues down to a post near where the gear shifter enters the housing. (Second image). I was wondering about that.. I opened up the connector and the 2 wires (coming from forward) show continuity when I put my probes on 'em. Thought that was weird, but maybe supposed to be like that? I turned on the key and tested for voltage but didn't find any.
I'm just unaware of how to test for anything. Would be interesting to put 12 volts to the starter, but not sure about doing that or how. The wires going in are kind of hard to get to. I suppose I could take out the starter.. but wanted to ask if there is something easier to check first.
      Thanks for looking!
