97 yamaha big bear starter issues

Recommended Posts

Hi. I sunk my 97 big bear in a water hole up o the seat. I drove it home after it being in a swamp. Drove it twice since and then it wouldn't start at all. I since drained the gas, oil twice, and changed the oil filter. also changed the spark plug and air filter. It fired up on two occasions only by the pullcord.(electric start has a grinding noise at first then it starts clicking noise). Ran o for about 20 minutes each, ran very high and wouldn't throttle back too much. Electric start did work before the water hole.

any help would be great to get this thing started again!

Thanks. I soaked it already. I will take it all apart this time. Also do you know if when I take off the spark plug wire, then pushing the start button, should I have spark in the wire? if so then There isn't any spark. Is this related to the bike not starting? thanks again

U might need to rebuild ur starter motor. They go out because the brushes where. You should be able to find a rebuild kit.

If you take the starter out and look into the motor can there should be two gray pieces of metal. Those ride on the motor shaft. They will be held to the shaft with a spring or some kind of spring steel. If those are gone you need to rebuild it.

Thanks. That would explain the gray metal filings that were all over the oil filter. Good thing i changed the oil and filter. Is getting the kit the thing to do? Is it that much for a new starter? I also noticed the ground wire that goes to the motor, is bare and smokes when i hit the electric start. Thats when the grinding noise starts. It would make sense that it sounds like the starter is trying to work. Also tried crossing the solenoid and it makes the grinding noise for a second then starts clicking. Any ideas ? Thanks

A good rule of thumbs is to never leave a wire bare a specially in water.

A new starter is normally pretty price for a little motor. Normally a rebuild is way cheaper if you can find one. And the grinding probally means you need new brushes.

Does it still start with the pull? That doesnt seam right. However how old is your battery. The voltage doesnt always matter. My battery would charge but i couldnt get it to start the solenoid would just click. I got a new battery and it fired right up. If your battery is old you might need a new one. I know that is pretty obvious but there are some simple things you dont think of

Hey everyone. so again no luck today with all the tips. took things apart and cleaned them, battery was charged up to the best it could be. 12.8 volts from 12.3 and 550cca up to 660cca. I think that is the cranking amps(not my area). local dealer told me the battery needs more than what mine is putting out to have the starter relay work. So its still just making a humming noise or buzzing sound from the starter relay when I push start button. Also will not turn over from the pull start. Any Ideas?

      Hey I have a 1997 big bear 350 4x4
I replaced the shifter shaft and the shift arm linkage and the rod when I installed them all I was unaware that you had to line the dot on the shifter shaft with the gap on the linkage arm gap put it all back  together and rode it I can't get it to shift in the right gears  I can move the shift cam by hand and goes in different gears but with the shifter shaft in it riding I can't put it in R or N
Anyone know how to line up the shifter shaft and the shift cam s

Hi guys. I have a problem where the quad will start and run well for about 5 minutes and then it dies. On inspection the airbox has oil in it (quite a lot). The oil is pumping through the cylinder head breather hose. This problem first happened suddenly. I have since done the top end including, piston, gaskets, rings and valves. I have also done the carb (not that I thought that this was the problem). The compression seems normal. The only thing that I can think of, is that I did not grind the valves well enough. Anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? Any other thoughts?

My uncle bought a Baja 250, 2006. Knew there was no spark since the get go. He don't know anything about quads so is getting me to help him try to get it running...

battery is bad so I connected battery charger to it to crank it over , cranks over well , but no spark ....
Lights and everything work fine , but with each crank over using the e start switch , the display reads 999 888 777 666 ... Right down to 000 and repeats itself .

He managed to get a parts bike , I changed over the CDI and the coil and the stator from the parts bike and there was another black box by the voltage regulator I changed over ... I used my multimeter to confirm as much as I could works , it's hard without knowing which wires are which , and I cannot find any diagrams online for this bike ?

Do you think it could be the Killswitch? There's so many wires coming from there I don't know where to start . Also I should mention it appears the fan on the front of the bike has been taken off (the wires have been cut too )

If this bike sparked it would run . The previous owner said he parked it one day and it just wouldn't start after.

I WANTED TO UPGRADE THE CARBURATOR ON MY 1992 BIG BEAR 350, SO I ORDERED A NEW CARB FROM EBAY.  ACCORDING TO THE WRITE-UP IT WAS A GOOD FIT FOR BIG BEARS FROM 1988 TO 1996.  WHEN I REMOVED MY ORIGINAL CARB I NOTICED THAT IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE NEW CARB MY CARB HAD TWO THROTTLE  CABLES THE NEW CARB ONLY HAD ONE CABLE.  HOW CAN I MAKE THIS CARB WORK ON MY TWO CABLE THROTTLE?

2022 Sector 550, 414 miles on it and the gas gauge reads empty.  I topped off the gas and it didn't change.
There is no fuse that I could find.  No access at the gauge cluster.
Wiring on the top of the tank looks good, properly connected.
Could the sending unit in the tank be stuck or broken?
Has anybody removed the tank lid?  Any tricks?
      Any other ideas?
      Thanks for any help,
      Clyde
