  1. I would change the fluid, sounds like something is stuck, if it was shifting good before you parked it, sitting should not have caused this problem.
  2. The new carb will probably do fine, but i would continue cleaning the OEM one, they do the best they were made for the quad.
  3. Thats a big crack!
  4. It meant to me dropped down to a good idle, maybe wrong.
  5. I was basing my response to post # 6 and 9, sounding normal, in fact i was thinking if you are getting it going on half choke you might be flooding a little. After seeing your last post about the plug staying dry , im wondering if your float needle is stuck. Have you cleaned or went through the carb .
  6. This really has nothing to do with the problem, but the video i posted of the Big Bear 400 professional peaked my curiosity. I had never seen or heard of one and the neutral switch was in the right place for a 350. I found out that the quad was only sold in Canada and it was a short run production. It seems none of the other parts from the 400 engine was the same either. I dont know how long it was produced but the one i am referring to was a 2004 model. My only conclusion is this was a Big Bore 350 engine for a trial run. Probably a very rare quad .
  7. That sounds normal.
  8. That is a lot of work just for the neutral light. I decided to wait and replace it when i redo the clutch.
  9. All the 400s iv seen has been under that right cover, but the one in the video, big bear 400 professional, which i have never seen before, showed it being screwed directly into the transmission housing like the 350s were and the Bear Tracker in post #2.
  10. I think i ended up determining that it was under the cover, mine started working again kind of off and on so i never did fix mine, i started working on something else and forgot about it, and this post jogged my memory. Im not sure what that big bear is that i posted the video on but said it was a 400 and his is definately in a different place, must not be a US model, thought you might recognize it.
  11. So you are using full choke, only to get it started, or are you running full choke.
  12. Thanks! I did find it in the cable routing, i think it showed the light, and did see it mentioned in the electrical section, never did find where it was located , I will look again at the beginning and see if i missed it. I was looking in a 2000 manual, but should be close to the same. I think you are right about it being under the cover, thats where i thought it was, but the few videos i saw show it different, like the lug sticking out with a wire attached, like the old 350s had.
  13. I did find this video, doesnt say what year, and i have never seen a Big Bear professional, so im not sure if its different from other 400s.
  14. Just out of curiosity, where did you find that information. We kind of had this manual discussion a little before, i agree there is great information there, information that you couldnt do the job without. But when it comes to something small like this i looked until i was tired of looking and didnt find it. I looked through the table of contents, i looked through the engine section, i looked through the electrical section, never did see where its locaated how to test it or replace it. I know im not as sharp as i used to be but i looked hard and i was using a Big Bear 400 manual.
  15. That sound like a fuel delivery problem. How does it run after you get it started, faster idle than normal, choke on or half on , any cutting out or power loss.
  16. Great! Hope you get it going! I know the getting back to it senario, i have 2 now that are on the get back to list, Good Luck!
  17. Good point! So many are resurrections, especially on one this old, sometimes i forget that it might have been running good and then this happens.
  18. I am very familiar with that department, i have very many good ideas to work on but other things always take priority. I wouldnt down what you have so much, you have 4 wheels you have a quad , just not 4 wheel drive, those units are very capable, of couse you cant sink it in mud and expect to come out, but for normal everyday riding through the woods and hauling stuff around, i think they are great. I have been meaning to get one but dont really have the room, too many toys already.
  19. You have your meter set on the continuity mode, that will tell you if you have a broken wire, put leads on each end of wire it should beep. It wont show voltage. If you use a test light or set meter to DC volts, one lead to wire and one lead to ground, if light lights up you have voltage, and meter will show you how much voltage.
  20. I dont particularly like changing jet sizes either, i tend to stick with factory specs, but since this wasnt the carb that came on the bike, i thought there might be a little difference in jet size, but i have not been able to find the OEM jet size yet.
  21. I have never known of anyone doing that and i have never really had one apart to see exactly how it might be possible.. I do know that some of those were sold with locking differentials, so it is possible. Probably a very expensive and interesting project. Maybe if you could find a trashed one with a bad engine that has a locking differential, that might be you best alternative.
  22. Very nice modification, thanks for sharing.
  23. The other line should be top dead center, some have a T beside it but i didnt see one on yours. and the F is when it fires. It looks like yours is in perfect time, they most always are, timing advance is controlled by the CDI, yours is so minor i dont think that is the problem, i think i would try the next size larger main jet.
