  1. I also just cheat with muffler repair cement. If it's not a ridiculous size hole and you don't care what it looks like you can just cut a patch out of tin, apply the muffler cement, and hold it in place with hose clamps until it dries. Once you get that stuff hot it hardens right up.
  2. So it looks like that was the first year of the 425 motor, lists as motor # EH42PL01. Until at least 1998 they still made a 425 but it lists as motor #EH42PLE01 until 1997 and then EH42PLE02 in 1998. I have no idea what the difference is between the 95 motor and the E is? I would assume the 98 has some form of major difference.
  3. As a fellow cattleman, I would try to find a Magnum 425 6x6 with a blow motor and drop yours in. The extra axle with the dump box is an amazing thing on the farm, I believe they're rated to haul like 900lbs. Also if you want them to do work with they go OVER pretty much anything. They don't really dig through the mud, they just drive right over it. That being said, they're no fun to play in the mud/etc. because they just drive over it. On a tangent, my Magnum 6x6 also came with a manual switch installed for the fan. I'm currently working on fixing that and trying to see if the fan is actually working good enough. Half thinking of dropping one in from a small car. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
  4. In older units where there is a bit of damage, synthetic oil leaks by easier than conventional. If everything is in perfect shape synthetic should lubricate better. I know some guys swear by cleaning out your oil with seafoam. You add it to the oil in the recommended amounts and run it x number of hours then do an oil change.
  5. Also note your shift pattern. Not sure on the '82 but lots of these things are pull up on the lever to shift down. Makes a lot of sense right? Do you have a charged battery in it and does the neutral light work? I would sit on it, rock it back and forth while pulling up on the lever until it kind of clicks into place. Release the lever and then do that again, and again, and again until it feels different and won't click. That is either neutral or high gear. If the key is on, the battery is charged, and your neutral light works then it should be glowing, if not push it backwards or forwards and see if it rolls easy. If it doesn't try pushing down while rocking instead of pulling up. Also of note, when you're shifting and it's in that "clicked" position, your gears aren't engaged, so it's like a neutral spot between gears. Comes in handy if you need to push start them, mine at least would just lock the tires up in 1st gear, but if you put it in first, then held it in that position between first and second while you pushed it and got up some speed, then jumped on it and released right as you landed on the bike you could get it to turn over and go. Hills help. Sorry for the random tangent.
  6. Any reason I would have issues downloading this? Downloaded chapter 1 and 2 yesterday no problem, waited over 24 hours and tried to download chapter 5. It appeared to be working but didn't download, then suddenly says I used 2 downloads today when the last downloads I have are chapters 1 and 2 yesterday morning?
  7. I like the name UTV, utility terrain vehicle. We run a Kubota RTV (they call them rugged terrain vehicles) on the farm and I don't think I could ever go back to not having one. It's literally used more than the tractor. Only job it doesn't do as well as a quad is chase cows as it's top speed is about 1 mile an hour faster than a cow haha. That being said, they are not really any fun to "play" with, they are made to work.
  8. So I have an old 2 stroke 4x4 Trail Boss that I learned to drive on as a kid (until it started on fire) that was rewired and done up a few years ago. Fired it up this spring and the chain popped off. The end of the chain tensioner bolt had snapped off. Ended up cutting off the threaded section and welding a new bolt onto it (not the first time this was done by the looks of it) and away I went. Two days later my weld apparently broke and the chain popped off again. Unfortunately this time it piled up and it looks like it snapped the output shaft from the gearbox off. Trying to figure out parts or find a parts machine, but all the Polaris vin search tells me is that it's a 1988. It looks like there were like 4 models of Trail Boss that year, and I have no idea what this one is for sure? A quick Google shows different part #s for the different models shafts, but some of them come with gears and some don't, so they could be the same shaft? If I find a parts machine that is slightly different would I be able to just swap the entire gearbox?
  9. Hello, Just came across this forum, always nice to find one that is still active. I'm a farmer with more projects than time to do them, always seem to have some form of three wheeler or quad in the shop. I have a (probably bad) habit of buying old ATVs and ATCs that need work for cheap so I'm always looking for some kind of information or advice on how to keep these old beauties running.
  10. I'm not familiar with that exact machine, but I don't think the neutral switch would cause the wheels to be locked. If it started before this issue chances are the neutral wire is fine and it actually is in gear. I would try rocking it back and forth while attempting to shift it, might just be stuck with a little bit of tension in the system or something misaligned.
  11. You probably won't see any difference unless you're running it when it's cold (like -20 below cold) and even then only the short amount of time it takes the engine to come up to heat. Hell, the oil company I deal with at work "stopped making" 5W40 oil because their 5W40 tested good enough to meet 0W40 specs so they just started labeling it as 0W40. That being said I'm not a mechanic.
  12. Anyone ever heard of a Grainger 3 wheeler? I have one I randomly bought years ago, looks like an auger motor with a ski-doo clutch mounted to a 1" square tube frame on 3 wheels. I believe the advertising paperwork it came with said this was the farming version and they made one called a big foot or sasquatch for hunting. It's quite the unit, but being belt drive has some obvious drawbacks in regards to playing in mud or water. Hard to find information on them, would be interesting to find out more history on it.
  13. Ya, I'm thinking if I do it I'm going to run a bigger gear on the back and slow it down, can always gear it up afterwards if need be. Never actually looked up how fast that 185 would go stock, bought it because it was cheap and then shortly afterwards blew the splines on the rear end of my 200 so it became a parts machine. My only dirt bike experience is on Honda Monkey 50's and a couple of Honda Trails, none of which I rode for long as they were my brothers and he had a habit of selling things shortly after he bought them, always for more money than he paid though haha.
  14. Anybody build/buy a lift table for working on your machines? I've got one of those little hydraulic motorcycle lifts but it just seems so tippy with a quad on it. And using jack stands with it means you're locked into a height.
  15. The 185 rear has been in the 200 for a few years already. Was thinking of just welding something up for a swing arm. Seen some pictures of one's with a solid rear end, but if I'm going to do it I figure I might as well do it right. I figured using a pair of shock mounted outside the tire like an old style motorcycle would be easier, but I assume there is some reason why all motorcycles switched over to a center mounted mono shock at some point.
  16. Does anyone have any experience in converting a Honda ATC to 2 wheels? I've seen them called fat cat conversions or Honda hippos and they look like they could be a blast. I've got an atc 185 that I stole the (pretty much brand new aftermarket) rear end out of to put on a worn out 200m. Looking for opinions on mounting the rear end, if a mono-shock or two outside mounted shocks or no shocks at all. Or if anyone has ridden one and has an opinion if it's even worth doing? Thank you
  17. Hello Everyone, I have a Kawasaki KLT 200A I picked up at an auction and it's missing the carburetor. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction of a replacement that would work with it. I have absolutely no experience with these green machines but figured it would make a cool addition to my fleet of Hondas. Thank you
