Aftermarket CDI's i have never had any luck with.  NOT ONE! They do weird things to the atv. Lights, come on, blown fuses etc.

I put an oem used or new (expensive) in place and all good.

It seems to be the most expensive parts that cost the most but work the best.   🤷🏻‍♂️

I have read that a CDI can go bad sitting on the shelf.  Something to do with needing electricity to flow through it to keep it healthy.  There is a thread somewhere on here where a guy went through like 6 before getting one that would work. So most likely yes, defective CDI.

Well thats a first for me.  Maybe if it were a moist area where they were stored??
Constant electrical flow should have nothing to  with the life span of a cdi.  As long as its not soaked or hooked up backwards (battery) it should be fine.

In some of my previous posts on other topics, i mention how i put a cdi in the oven for 10 min on 250 deg. Pulled it out, cooled it off and put it back on the atv and it worked for a few days until it got moist inside again. Baked it one more time and this time added silicone to the outside of the cdi and it was fine for a long time.

The failure inside cdi boxes are usually caused by failed diodes.  Weather it be from reverse voltage, welding on an atv without disconnecting the wiring etc. These things wreak havoc and stops the cdi from sending voltage to the ignition coil any longer.

Now if its just a moisture issue then it can be warmed, dried and resealed as mentioned above.  Just don't over cook it.

Agreed, It probably got wet and that is why its not working. CDI's or any other electrical part does not need a flow of power to keep it good, pure bunk.

I don't know about other model ATV's but Arctic Cat usually encases the CDI in epoxy so its impossible to repair them, too bad, because most of the parts inside would be cheap to replace such as diodes and capacitors. Once a CDI box gets to about 20 years old, it is common for the capacitors inside to fail, then you have no spark.

Electrolytic capacitors typically only have a life of about 20 years before the plates break down inside (kinda like a battery)

  • Ajmboy changed the title to CDI box from Ebay Reverse Light Stays On

Damn. Easy there gents, I was only relaying a previous thread I read somewhere on here. But would it not stand to reason that a CDI does indeed have a shelf life due to moisture? Bare metal crusts in ambient humidity so maybe a CDI on a shelf for a few years could draw a bit of humidity? Especially given that there is no QC on imported Chinese parts?

I purchased a CDI box from Ebay that was listed as the one for a 200trx with round plug.....when I plugged it in the reverse light stays on.....what did I do wrong ? or is it just a bad CDI box?

I only buy OEM parts when it comes to electrical

Howdy ya'll. I am working ona 2000 Yamaha Breeze 125. It was in rought shape when I received it and I am working through issues as they pop up. The quad had been sitting for years. I was able to get her running again, but I need your help with the following issue:
I don't trust the transmission yet and I don't want to make problems any worse. So, I haven't pushed things hard at all. Low rpms, less than 5mph in reverse.

      Nuetral: Runs as expected
Reverse: She seems to be driving fine at slow speeds. Going into reverse at idle is fine, coming out of reverse back into neutral won't work (the shifter is just stuck). As soon as I turn off the quad, I am able to shift around without any issue.
Forward: It slips. It seems to only transfer power to the wheels on a smooth surface and going slightly downhill. When shifting into forward at idle, there is a clacking sounds during the transition. Shifting back to nuetral works just fine.

Other Notable Symptoms: There was old oil in the vbelt and when I was tuning the carb, it starting blowing out of the CVT cooling vent at the front of the quad. Made quite a mess. There is positive crankcase pressure due to piston blowby, that I have not decided whether or not I am going to fix (customer budget dependant).  Since the oil was old, much darker than the new oil that is in the crankcase, I am thinking it seeped past a bad seal while it was sitting for years. The oil that was in it when I first got it had gas in it.

Thoughts: I am thinking maybe there is an issue with the clutch. I worry about the old oil intermingling with the dry centrifugal clutch. I was thinking my next step would be to take the cover off of the clutch and inspect it.

Let me know what you all think. Any advice and ideas is greatly appreciated. This is only the 3rd quad I have worked on and I have a lot to learn.

This 2006 ArticCat dvx400 didn't have a reverse cable. I got one and am wondering how it routes? If someone has a dvx400, could post a pic of there reverse cable routing, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

HI everyone. New to this forum. I have 98 Kawasaki Bayou 400 with an apparent electrical issue. I have the Clymer manual, but I am not exactly sure where to start. The issue started a month ago and the neutral light would go on and off intermittently. Eventually it went completely off , and I thought it was a shifting issue. I took the case off and checked the clutch and all mechanical shifting components are good, so I think I eliminated that. The switch sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Last time I tried, I did hear a clicking sound near where the battery is right before the light went out. Does anyone have any ideas where to start? Hoping this is an easy fix.
