Honda TRX 250 No Spark

Arizona

Recommended Posts

Well got another one for the elders here. I recently picked up a Honda Trx 250

in pretty rough shape. Brought it home cleaned it up if thats possible. Motor was

seized, Pretty bad shape. I unseized the motor, got it to spin over, Got it to crank on its

own with the start button. Got neutral light, but no spark. Fuses good wiring is old but looks

intact. Went to check cdi box, here is where the problem lies, I dont know the year. The last one

was under the plastic on the crossmember, this one has none. Looks like a  sticker was there at one time.

I checked the left side of frame by foot peg and nothing. Cant find any vin number. I need to know the year

to try to locate a cdi. One clue is this one appears to have 2 cdi boxes. One is a little larger than the other but

plugs look identical to eachother. One has green connectors and the other has white connectors. Is this only

on certain year model that has duel cdi boxes? I also need a download for a trx 250 Im thinking its about a 1985 or 86

but just a guess. Before changing i would like to check some voltages but need a manual for this. Any guess on how to

identify and or get a download for this one would be great. Wont let me post pics only .08 MB Down load available. Thanks in advance Az

Ok, update. I downloaded the 85-87 Trx 250 manuel. It showes both cdi boxes but only lists

1 as the cdi box. Not sure what the other one is. At least i have a map. Still would like to know the year

of it. Gonna have to do some back probing on the wiring when i get some time. Didnt see this download

last time i was on here. Az

The other box is likely the voltage regulator.  I don't know  how long they  did it . but  on my 1991 Fourtrax 300 and  other models around the late '80's /  early '90's the serial is stamped into the frame cross tube  low on the  front end. The stampings aren't very deep  and are easily obscured by rust  or paint.

The other box appears to be a warning box, maybe a driver for the oil over heat etc.

At least that what the wiring diagram shows, I scrubbed the tube where the vin should be

but dont see anything. On my old one all i ever saw was the sticker which had the info on it but

no vin. Ill have to check again when it warms up here. Az

Have you checked the coil, plug wire for continuity, stator output when cranking it over, stop/run/stop switch on the handlebar, etc before thinking CDI?  Bad CDI is pretty unusual but possible.  Sometimes you can bake a CDI at 250 for 5 minutes and drive off a bit of internal moisture and get them to work temporarily.  That way you know if the CDI is bad or not.  And yes, the 2nd box is an alarm box for oil temp warning.

LOL, I have baked the cdi @ 300 for 10 min. Havent tested it since.

Been kinda busy. I still have to check the kill switch, and voltages to see

where im at. Happy i found the other download for the wiring.  Work and

the cold keeping me from working on it. Will report what i find. Thanks Az

  • 2 weeks later...

So got around to doing some checks, all stator legs seem to be grounded, not good.

The pick up also grounded on both wires, Not sure how all are grounded but pulled off

the cover with the stator, looks ok but havent pulled it off the housing yet. Never seen one

that every wire was grounded to the body. Guess ill order new stator and go from there. Az

Well removed the stator from the housing and then could see the damage. Must have had foreign

material get in and smashed between stator and flywheel. Has a good dent in flywheel but i think

should be ok. Ordered new stator, will replace when it gets here and go from there. Wonder if thats

what locked the motor up and not a stuck ring, Shall see. Learning all the time. Az

lol, no repairing this one. stator smashed into wires, tried using a chisel to separate, not

working, Also, cover would hit frame and could not remove with out pulling motor or at

least unbolting and jacking up. Decided to break out the die grinder and take off part of frame

by foot pedal to save a lot of work. Parts should arrive later this week. Az

  • 5 months later...

Update on the Honda, Replaced the stator and pickup as it comes with both.

Rechecked and has spark now, Also carb throttle plate rusted in fixed position,

tried it all and no fixing this carb. I ordered one and after playing with the metering rod

adjustment actually runs great. Was a lot more to it but you get the point. Sorry long wait but

have had other projects keeping me busy.

I have a 1988 Quadrunner 250 2wd. My brother in law sold it to my son for $20...had been sitting outside for several years. Got it home and had it running in about 30 mins. Ran it a bit and then went to looking at the carb as it was having trouble idling. Was getting it pretty close, then started losing spark...Also, it wouldn't start up every time...only about 1 in 5 tries. Anyway...now, it has what I can only describe as "intermittent" spark. I can get 1 light spark right when the start button is pressed and sometimes one when it's released...but none while cranking. 🤷‍♂️

I have replaced the spark plug, ignition coil/wire, and traced wires best I can. I noticed a couple frayed wires at the pickup coil where it enters the case. So, now I have the cover off, stator and pickup coil out and trying to test the coil. I do have about 114 ohms resistance for pickup best I can tell. And I can read minute voltage when I drag a magnet across it. Could it still be bad? Can a bad ignition switch/button cause this? (I did have the switch off to oil the choke cable)...pulling rope makes no difference though...any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!!! It's the intermittent part that's throwing me off!

My uncle bought a Baja 250, 2006. Knew there was no spark since the get go. He don't know anything about quads so is getting me to help him try to get it running...

battery is bad so I connected battery charger to it to crank it over , cranks over well , but no spark ....
Lights and everything work fine , but with each crank over using the e start switch , the display reads 999 888 777 666 ... Right down to 000 and repeats itself .

He managed to get a parts bike , I changed over the CDI and the coil and the stator from the parts bike and there was another black box by the voltage regulator I changed over ... I used my multimeter to confirm as much as I could works , it's hard without knowing which wires are which , and I cannot find any diagrams online for this bike ?

Do you think it could be the Killswitch? There's so many wires coming from there I don't know where to start . Also I should mention it appears the fan on the front of the bike has been taken off (the wires have been cut too )

If this bike sparked it would run . The previous owner said he parked it one day and it just wouldn't start after.

Hello everyone, I just picked up an 02 LT-F250F the other day and have been in the process of tearing it down to fix some stuff- one of which was the cylinder base gasket leaking like a sieve. Well, I know why that is now, and I also discovered that someone had been in there before. I didn't take pictures, but it looks like it was probably run low on oil at some point, the cam journals and the "bearings" (for lack of a better term) in the head and the valve cover are totally wiped out, very deep grooves.  From what I know it's very difficult to repair aluminum in this way, so I'm trying to figure out where to go next.

      1. Have someone grind down the head and valve cover and fit actual bearings in since the aluminum is screwed, and have the cam ground down to match.  I have no idea what this would cost.
      2. Buy a replacement head+cam+valve cover.

#1 I was hoping someone might have some advice on, but #2 seems like it'll (probably) be the more cost effective option.  However I'm running into some difficulty, it seems like the 2001 and 2002 models specifically use a different head part number,  11100-19B10, instead of  11100-19B01 like for all earlier models.  What exactly is the difference between them? There are obviously far more of the earlier heads because it ran for over 10 years.  Are they actually interchangeable? I've also noticed there are heads from the LT250EF that has 4 valve heads but also otherwise look identical.  Would those work as well possibly?  I'd like to not have to drop $500 on machine work or new heads on a $1300 quad that I'm already putting a bunch of new parts on.  Oh, and it has a new piston and the cylinder itself looks pretty good too, as I said someone was in here before me.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll post pics of the carnage tomorrow.
