I have a 2007 Outlander MAX XT.

I had a major problems getting it started this spring. I went through three spark plugs before I went more then 18km.

When it starts I don't have any power for about 0.1km and it will often stall. Once it gets going it runs fine (went for a short 30km run last weekend with no problems).

Last night it started fine but then cut out after less then 2 minutes while letting it warm up (currently -15 deg celcius -27 with wind chill)

This morning it wouldn't start at all.

There are a number of Outlanders here in town which all seem to be working fine but they are all older models.

Could this just be because it is so cold? Or are there some other test I should do to help diagnose this problem?

I would say check with Can-am to see if there is any recalls on the EFI. Might have the wrong mapping for the EFI for where you live. Yamaha and Honda had that problem in certain places in the US. Mostly at the temps you are currently having.

That is a fuel injected machine? Do you have fresh gas in it along with a clean air filter.

I believe that is Fuel Injected. It's obviously a cold start issue. Some possible causes:

1. EFI systems are controlled by a mini ECM or module, and may need to be flashed or reprogrammed. Could be what BuckBilly said.

2. Not sure, but maybe there is a cold start injector like on cars that may be having an issue.

3. Could be a temperature sensor that is not telling the machine to dump more fuel when it's cold or before reaching operating temperature.

No matter how you look at it, since it's fuel injected..I would take it to a dealer if you are not familiar with the system.

I thank everyone for their thoughts and suggestions. Here is what I discovered.

Yes there is some water in the gas... but not enough to cause problems.... Turns out that even though BRP suggests using NGK spark plugs... THEY DON"T WORK!!!

I was able to finally find a Champion plug that fits and my baby fired up first try - with no choke - for the first time in the three years that I had it...

was just out cruising on the sea ice for a few hrs and she's running perfect in the -15deg Celcius temperature...

now I just need the snow to melt so I can get out for a real ride...

That is very strange, NGK is the plug of choice in most if not all Japanese engines. This might sound stupid, but are you sure you had it gapped properly? Maybe the NGK's have a problem with cold weather or something.

Jeff- firstly, you mentioned in your last post that you had choke on your unit, which makes me thik that it is a 400 single, not the v twin efi.

If so, 400's have be notorious for fouling plugs. Some have done some pilot jet changes slightly leaner. As to cold weather use, definetly switch to the 0-40w sythetic oil . And i recommend a pan heater , low wattage- 75-125 watt, plug in 2-3 hrs before need.

can you give me the champion plug number both my 400 ,s eat ngk plugs every time i ride them thanks

:biggrin: GOOD MORNING DODGE, THE EARLY OUTLANDERS WERE AND ARE HARD ON PLUGS, AS PER MY PREVIOUS POST. I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND CHAMPION PLUGS TO BE FECAL MATTER BUT SOME PEOPLE LIKE THEM.

THE CHAMPION NUMBERS ARE 809 OR RA6HC. LET ME KNOW IF THEY WORK ANY BETTER.

      I own a 2007 Polaris Sportsman EFI X2 model and have for the past months been experiencing loads of issues. Basically the Sportsman will only start if the throttle lever is pushed and will not remain on idle. This situation has persisted for months now and I have replaced the following parts:

      Sparking Plug
      Fuel Injector
      Fuel Pump
      Fuel Filter
      Fuel Valve
      Fuel lines
      Power Control Module

      The last part replaced was the Power Control Module and the Sportsman was tested and worked fine on a couple of occasions which were days apart so much so that some weeks later I took the Sportsman for an extensive ride and it worked perfectly. This was three weeks ago and today I tried to start the ATV it worked fine a few minutes and decided to switch it off so that I could continue with some prep work. A few minutes later tried to start it up again but noticed that it would only start if the throttle lever was pushed and once I removed my finger from the throttle lever the engine would not stay in idle and would simply shut down. Several attempts were made to start this and also tried to re-adjust the setting by turning the built in wheel like mechanism in the throttle cable but it was to no avail.

      The above have been repeating itself on an off basis. Each time a part is replaced the ATV would work and then all of a sudden will not keep its idle. At this stage I cannot think of any other solution other than possibly some sensors which might have an intermitting fault but I cannot really say.

      Would greatly appreciate any assistance.

      New to the forum here, hoping someone can help. I have replaced the cdi, coil and sparkplug yet still no spark. The measurements for the igniter and stator are what they are supposed to be, the kill switch is working as it should, the neutral light is working as well. Any ideas where else to look before i start trying to pull it apart for the stator and igniter?

      We rebuilt the engine put wiring back together it ran before but now it won’t and has a weak spark we have been trying to figure it out for about a week and still nothing changes does anyone have any help on what it might be?

      Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

      I recently was gifted a 1998 Lakota 300 and it was modified to start only by electric start. ( Removed the pull start) So I put together all the parts he was able to find and I believe it's back together like it's supposed to be but when I start it via electric start, it turns over but I do not hear the sound a proper combustion sound makes. Furthermore, I did all the spark tests and it's showing none whatsoever. 
       I installed a new starter and I believe I installed it correctly. Could I have accidentally thrown the timing off? I lined up the timing marks but the top mark will NOT line up correctly.
