I'm a newbie with ATV's and was given a '98 454 4X4 Artic Cat by my brother. It has been sitting for about a year without being run so I changed the oil, charged the battery and replaced the spark plug but I can't seem to get it to start. It only has 689 hr

Where should I start the trouble shooting? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Congrats on the atv.

First, with key on , is there power? What happens when you hit the start button? I know you charged the battery, but it still could be dead. Did you try the pull start? Is the choke working properly and on when starting?

There is power. The lights come on and the green light highlights the N (neutral). I have tried the pull start with no luck. When I hit the start button I can hear the motor turning over similar to when i pull start. Is the chock the right beside the start button? It seems to be worn and I'm not sure if full choke is all the way down or up. How would I go about check the choke? Thanks for your help

Make sure the fuel switch is not off or on reserve. Also some quads you need to hold the handbrake when starting it or put it in park. when you crank it, does it seem the starter is moving slow? You may want to add a booster to the battery if so. Maybe the battery is week and not strong enough to fully crank it over.

Another thing, since it was sitting...your float in your carb could be stuck. You could spray some fuel into the air intake to see if it is a fuel starvation issue.

Thx for all your help. I have changed batteries. I sprayed some starter fluid in the air intake. I was able to crank it for a few seconds but will not stay cranked. Also, will only crank if I spray the starter fluid. Would this suggest a fuel starvation issue? If so how do I need to trouble shoot? Thanks

When you say "crank" are you saying that it sounds like it wants to start? If you're spraying starting fluid and it only sounds like it's going to start then...yes...it's not getting fuel.

Check your fuel petcock and make sure it's ok...there should be a lever or switch on the side of the quad or somewhere closer to the carb that has an ON, OFF, and RES setting. Make sure itis not on OFF..due to the fact that it was stored.

You may need to take the carb apart as it might have a stuckj float due to sitting around..happns. If the float is stuck down, fuel will not enter the carb bowl.

drain the fuel and clean the carb they get gummed up with varnish from old gas. Plus stale gas has a much lower flash point and is not good for the wheeler.

This sounds like it will fix it. I also run sea foam through every other tank of gas. It keeps everything clean.

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

I would appreciate being pointing in the correct direction for a wiring diagram and or schematics of the 88 Honda FourTrax 300 4x4 if anybody has any knowledge of how to test the ignition system stator and CDI I don't know if the voltage regulator probably and also the FCU I put a new ignition in it it is a cheap aftermarket one doesn't have the correct plugs but has the correct wiring scheme I get power  the neutral light comes on and the oil light stays on it turns over but I have no spark

1st problem, Does anyone know where I can find a stock carb for my Timberwolf, I have tried two different aftermarket carbs and they both suck. The machine runs great until it gets good and warm, then it keeps stalling unless I feather the throttle. it will even stall while I'm trying to go from 1st to reverse or vise versa. I took it to a buddy of mine who is a bike mechanic for years, and he told me try to find a factory carb. When I look online from dealers it says "NOT AVAILABLE" anyone have any suggestions ?

2nd, The small tab on the rear axle for towing is to short for even pulling my small yard trailer, I can't even turn a little bit and hit hits. I tried making an extension which worked great as far as length, but it bends the tab and then the extension drags the ground. I have an idea of what to do to fix it, but wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and see how you solved it.

Hi! I’m new to the forum. I have several Polaris Trailboss 500’s, which I’m trying to make 2 usable bikes from. One is all but complete, needing only reassembly, while the other two are a decision as to which is parts and which is bike. lol. Anyhow…

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.
