Foolish Question, whats the difference

Recommended Posts

Here's a foolish question. I have never had an ATV, UTV, sand rail before, but I have had a few 4x4's. I am tired of beating up the full size 4x4 and thought it might be a better idea to sell it and have fun with a smaller size, and more capable... Something.

Long story short,

What is the difference in capability and riding of a 4 seater sand rail like this one:

And a UTV crew like this one:

Looking for a replacement for a full size 4WD vehicle, seats at least 3, in the sub $10,000 range. What would you recommend?

I'd say the biggest difference between the two machines you are looking at there is the size. The larger buggie is going to be faster and probably have a better ride. The UTV seems like it will be more under powered, it has a lower top speed, but it will be able to get into much tighter areas and will be more maneuverable. Personally, I like to stick with machines made by a manufacturers that I know to make reliable products. A newer Yamaha, Polaris, Can-Am etc... 4 seat UTV will be a bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for. A good used one could be found for under $10k. I like the Polaris Razr myself, the Yamaha Rhino is a very popular machine too.

I agree with DD, I would be worried about replacement parts for those machines. Those are probably chinese knockoffs, so I don't recommend buying them. I would stick with a manufacturer like Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, etc.

You will probably need to go to a port for pick up, since it probably comes directly from China.

x2 to the above posts, the main differance with sand rails and utvs is that you can only use sand rails in...sand...lol, utvs are great on trail systems, mud, dirt, sand, whatever. but...if you go to the dunes a lot, sand rails are awesome! beware chinese knockoffs, youll blow a tranny and never find replacement parts for them.

Anyone know what the fuse terminal marked UNSWITCH  does  .  Even with the key off it is causing a drain on my battery and I'm trying to figure out  what that terminal goes to.  It's a 10 amp fuse. If I pull it the "short" goes away.  Thanks in advance.

I have had a 2002 Suzuki King Quad 500 for almost a year. This is a question I’ve posted before, but likely missed the answer due to being new to the site. Here’s the issue. When in 4 wheel drive, especially in low range, especially when pulling a load downhill, I hear a lot of clanking in the front end. As if the front drive shaft was binding then unbinding. A friend who had a 1987 Dodge 4x4, told me all the noise his front end made when in 4 wheel drive was entirely normal. So, is this something I should worry about? I have all the bodywork and tank off right now doing a valve adjustment and carb rebuild. If I gotta do something, I’d like to do it now. Lastly, I’d love to find a carb tuning guide for this era of Mikuni. Haven’t tracked one down yet. Any thoughts of where to find one? Great forum. Have really enjoyed it so far.

What the hell does everyone use to pull a flywheel/rotor on a 99 yamaha bear tracker 250? I have looked online and they show 2 or 3 different ones. Finally figured mine out and need to remove the stator rotor to repair the starter gear.it wasnt installed correctly causing my issue of it just spinning the starter
