  1. So i have an old yamaha bear tracker that was given to me from an old farmer I know. I decided to refurbished it and fix all the quick fixes on it. I am pretty sure that it is either a 1999 or 2000 based upon the original wiring harness. Little did i know when I bought a new to me wiring harness from ebay that it was from a 2003 or 2004. My question to everyone is do I need to have all the stop switch assemblies hooked up? I think there are three on the 03/04 models and only one on the 1999 to 2000. Any help I can get for this would be great. I haven't run it yet due to the motor and crankcase is in two totes.
  2. Hi Guys, I'm a newbie but pretty handy with a DMM (controls technician). I have been fighting a junker quad i picked up as a project bike, was assured it would run if I replaced the battery and cleaned the carb. I replaced the battery, rebuilt the carb with a OEM kit. FIxed all my switches and foul played circuitry from the last guy.... So I could get it to start long enough to test the quad, it seems okay from a trans/engine point. However I couldn't get the carb adjusted to idle to save my life with the idle air screw or the thumb screw on the card for the slide. I took it to a friend who is much more familiar with yamaha and quads and he double checked my carb rebuild all was fine, he adjusted the float to make the fuel not overfill which i missed. He pulled the air intake, got it started and couldn't get it to idle with or without air filter. We started looking at the spark plug (new) and he tested it with a spark plug clamp meter, tested good, pulled it and grounded and it had spark but he felt it was weak. I order a working used oem coil to try the easy things first. When I ohm out the coil on the quad with my Fluke i'm seeing .4 ohms on primary (ground lug to male connector) and 18K ohms on secondary (inside boot to ground lug). Seems like this forum is full of bear trackers so I'm hoping someone has some ideas to help me figure where to go with this. His thought was he know I ave fuel and he knows I have air, spark would be next. I have spark but possibly weak. Thanks
  3. Hey y'all. I have a Yamaha ymf 250 BearTracker. I got this thing for free from people whose son tore it to hell. So it wasn't in great shape to begin with. i.e. no indicator lights (neutral light for instance), no ignition switch or key( wires were twisted together to make it run), get the picture yet? So when it ran it ran rough and I got it running for a year or two, just something fun for the kids to ride on with me on gravels. Now just randomly, the start button stopped working so I had to jump the solenoid, then put a temp start switch in. Kill switch would still work. However, the thing has no spark what-so-ever. I've check continuity through the start button and it shows the contact is working, ohmed out the stator, everything is in spec, the reg/rec tested fine as well. I've replaced the solenoid on the off chance it could've been bad and the cdi unit as well, along the the little solenoid relay unit. I'm still getting no spark. The spark plugs is new as well and the coils to the plug have been tested and are good. I've tested and trouble shooted everything I can on this quad and no luck. I watched countless YouTube "no spark" situation videos and it's not helped. Does anyone have any tips or tricks I could try? Would really appreciate some input on this. Thanks!
  4. Have an Bear Tracker 250. Dont have the manual or any literature to help with. Anyhow, starts with pull start in gear, and electric starter doesnt work. Also, neutral light doesnt come on. Where should I begin?? Need some direction on troubleshooting all this. Thanks a million.
  5. Trying to replace the carburetor on my 2003 Bear Tracker 250. Two brand new carbs in a row from different suppliers. Both leak fuel out over flow and intake as soon as I turn the gas on. Any ideas. Am I doing something wrong?
  6. I have a 1999 250 Yamaha bear tracker was told it needed a coil to run got into it to day found out that the kill switch was wired together then I found were they put a new cdi on it they cut all the plugs off the stator wires and the cdi wires I found bits and pieces of wireing diagrams blue pick up wire to red and white green wire to white and green wire rolled it over Had a test light on the coil wire it showed there was juice going to it but no spark on the plug and the coil is a brand new one put it on before trying to test the spark did I miss something or have something hooked up wrong already have plans on a new cdi and stator and pick up coil before I go that far like to hear it run. Thank you for the help in advance
  7. I have 2000 Yamaha bear tracker 250 - igniton relay and starter relay both were replaced also the neutral switch indicator was replaced-- bike will not show light on for neutral or start when button is pushed
  8. So i have a yamaha bear tracker 250. Ice replaced the ignition coil, pickup coil, cdi box, spark plug, neutral safety switch and kill switch are good. Battery and ground are good. But still no spark. What now? Before i burn this thing down.
  9. I have a yamaha beartracker 250 (yfm250) its not running right. starts fine mostly ...idles but if i give it gas it boggs out and dies before it even can carry its self ... I cleaned the carb ... put everything back and same issue. so i bought a new carb and intake boot.... replaced both things and still the issue persists. So i have a new carb .... does the Air fuel mixture need to be set on the new carb? If so how do i do that? i ave looked everywhere for details on my bike and carb but cannot find anywhere that reads that the skrew needs to be adjusted out to 7 full turns or somthing to that effect.. The bike ran fine until bad gas was put into it... i did remove and empty the gas tank. removed petcock cleaned and rebuilt that..... i also noticed that the new carb ....the bottom skrew for draining the bowl was closed all the way when i got it.. carb wouldnt get gas until i loosened it... now the bowl will drain ... i thought that that float stops this from happeneing....am i wrong?

  12. First thanks for any help guys, new to the forums and it's gotten me this far. I bought a 2001 bear tracker 250 for my family to get around the dirt bikes races. It wasn't running right and had a high idle. Previous owner thought it was a carb problem, so he ordered a new Zoom carb and new intake boot, but it still had the same high idle. ( I believe he had the throttle cable adjusted wrong, because it idled fine when I put it back together) So I tore down and cleaned the stock carb, and it started up and idled fine, but needed to have the choke 1/2 out to run. I swapped to the new zoom carb and had the same issue. Choke half out bike ran ok. I played with the needle and the pilot screw with no change. ( bike did seem to be running rich though, but didn't get better when I tightened pilot screw or raised meddle) I Took it to the races and once I started bouncing around in the cattle fields the quad started cutting out real bad. It would barely run. Sometimes it would run with choke off, sometimes choke 1/2, sometime choke full. I cleaned carb again, checked float level, and boots, no change still wouldn't run. Then suddenly it started running ok again. This makes me believe it's an electrical issue rather then carb. I know there's no air leak, it's been checked, both carbs are clean( I've swapped them out a couple times, it starts up immediately and usually idles fine. But then bogs down/ or stutters under throttle. I saw the post on the guy who disconnected his rectifier and reconnected and suddenly it started working again, which lead me to believe it may be electrical and not carb. So any advice on what I should check? Any way to test the CDI or rectifier? Once again, I appreciate your help.
  13. I could use some help. I have a 2000 Yamaha bear tracker. The bike has no spark. I went through the entire harness, even removed it and toned out all wires for shorts etc. changed the coil, cdi, relays by the battery etc. I have had my eye on the stator coil but tested it for voltage and got voltage from it. The bike was jump started by a car and also welded on. I heard that was not good. My question I guess is will a bad stator still produce voltage but no spark ? thaks.
  14. I have a 2000 Yamaha Bear Tracker 250 (YFM250) which starts up right away and runs ok for a bit, but with less than 1/2 the power of my other Yamaha Bear Tracker. Eventually after riding, it blackens the spark plug and runs awful and eventually doesn't want to start or run at all. CHOKE ISSUE: When you Pull the Choke Plunger 100% OUT, the idle goes DOWN....then pushed in at 1/2 position the idle goes UP and Choke Plunger pushed ALL THE WAY IN...Idle goes up even higher...? It acts like the plunger action is backward from our other 2004 Yamaha Bear Tracker (which idle goes up when pulling out, like normal). ---} Choke OUT = Normal Idle --} Choke IN 1/2 WAY = Higher Idle -} Choke IN FULLY = Super High Idle (For this reason, it has to run with the choke position all the way OUT or else it idles high and dies when you try to give it throttle.) While running it has very little power compared to our other Bear Tracker regardless of RPM. Less than half of the power, in fact. THINGS TRIED SO FAR: 1. Replaced Full Intake Boot Assembly From Carb-to-Head 2. Replaced Spark Plug 3. Replaced Ignition Coil and Spark Plug Wire 4. Replaced Air Filter Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  15. Power on turns over no spark. I replaced the coil, still no park . I replaced the cdi box no spark . I replaced the stator and pickup .no spark. PLEASE TELL ME MY PROBLEM
  16. hi can anyone tell me if theres an oil filter to change and if so where is it situated on a bear tracker please thanks
  17. We have a 2wd Bear Tracker that was flooded out by a tornado and I've since been trying to get it right. I've cleared the water out of the tank and now has fresh fuel, and I've opened the carb so many times I could do it blind folded under 10min. She'll fire up as soon as you turn the key and hit the button, even on a cold start, and idles perfectly. But the second you hit the gas it bogs down and dies. I had it running GREAT for about 10-15min once and suddenly ran like shit and limped it back to the house. I've barely got it to move under its own power since. I'm at a loss at this point. Does ANYONE know of something stupid I could've missed? The carb does have a fresh rebuilt kit that I put on about a month before the flood. It was not started until it dried, I cleared the tank and opened the carb the first time. I guess I'm just gonna pull the entire thing apart again and go from there. Maybe another rebuild kit? I'm gonna swear this thing is clean though. Thanks for any ideas
