  1. Hello. I have a Bear Tracker 2002. I have been having problems with spark. Since I have removed the battery and starter relay, it gives spark, ewhen pulling the starter by hand. When I install the battery and starter relay, it gives no spark, even if I pull the starter by hand. However, it will not start with the hand starter Has anyone had the same problem?
  2. Hi there. I have a 2002 Bear Tracker that doesn't spark. I want to test the CDI box but can't figure out how to test it. The CDI box is one that has a plug, with eight poles (see picture). Does anyone know how to test?
  3. I have a 1999 Yamaha bear tracker 250 that needs carburetor but I really can't afford a new one right now $650 at the dealer is there an older style o could use that would work
  4. At the end of last summer, my 02 Bear Tracker began to run poorly- long story short, the air box cover HAS to be on and sealed... now it runs ok, except it idles poorly, and I began to hear a "chik" noise on deceleration. This has become obvious chain noise hot. Runs great at throttle, poorly at idle. I pulled the cam cover- and the chain has no appreciable slop.... could this be a failing ratchet in the tensioner? Anyone seen this? I'm about to pull the tensioner. I COULD install a manual one, but if the factory one lasts several years, I may go back that way. I'd rather ride than wrench. FYI- ASE Master since 82, blah blah blah- small engines are NOT my bag. All replies GREATLY appreciated!
  5. Hey guys, I have lurked here for about 7 years (thanks for the yearly birthday wishes!) I posted 7 years ago that we bought a used Yamaha Bear tracker.. and we have had many adventures since then, but half of them have been repair “Adventures” It stopped starting (Even pull start) last year and I tried the basics (Spark plug, clean carb etc) I took it into a shop and they did EVERYTHING to get it to spark. New coil, replaced the entire handlebar cluster (Switches, coil, starter switch, neutral safety, and finally replaced the entire wiring harness.) It simply won’t even try to start. Pulling the pull cord doesn’t start it. After paying for their time and efforts (Over $1000) I dragged it home dead... This shop only “Fixes” things using OEM factory parts and won’t “Jury rig” anything... so if there was a creative way to bypass the entire thing to just start it, they couldn’t really discuss it. I did ask the mechanic when I was loading it up “What would YOU do if this was your ATV at home and you had these issues?” He said he experimented with bypassing the kill switched and it turned over. I didn’t think to ask HOW he bypassed the kill switch, but it sounds like that’s my culprit! So how do I bypass the kill switch on a 2003 Yamaha Bear Tracker 250? Or, is there a way to Hotwire it so I can start it without the starter button (In case that’s the issue, even though it shouldn’t be since the entire handlebar cluster is new.... it seems haunted at this point!

2001 Yamaha Bear Tracker Full Service Manual Figured I would share what I had. This really helped me out. Tinkering with my wife's atv now, so Looking for a 96 Polaris Xpress 300 service manual, preferably a free download.
  7. When I turn my key on the neutral light doesn't come on. I can jump the starter relay and it comes turns the starter but it won't start. The sky blue wire is connected. New battery, start button, cdi box, starter relay, sparkplug, sparkplug cable, rectifier and regulator, and new key.
  8. Hey everyone, thank you in advance for any information shared. I have a 99 yamaha beartracker 250 that I am restoring (not to oem specs). I am having trouble finding suspension parts other than ball joints. Does anyone know where i can find shocks/springs for this atv? Are there other yamaha atvs that have interchangeable parts? Or what options might i have. I typically use this quad for hunting, getting around the farm, and trailriding. Thank yall again for any info. The trailriding includes moderate hill climbs, creek beds, and wet/dry trails
  9. I've got a Bear Tracker I'm working on. The guy said that it was running until they ran it through water and it backfired and would not start again. He said when it backfired, it blew a hole in the muffler. Yeah... customers tend to lie, but... anyway. I replaced the starter clutch set to begin with so I could spin the engine and see what else was wrong. I cleaned the kill switch and got it to spark. I rebuilt the carburetor - there is no way this thing was running, but... yeah. I have verified that it has compression (over 150psi). I have verified that there are no leaks (with a leak down test). I have verified that the cam is in time. I have verified the the cam gear has not spun on the camshaft. I have verified that the valves are adjusted correctly. I have verified that the valves are in fact opening and closing. I have verified that the flywheel hadn't sheared the key (both when I replaced the starter clutch and I made sure that when the top-dead center mark is lined up, the piston is, in fact, at tdc). I have verified that it still has spark. I loosened the exhaust manifold, in case the muffler was clogged (even though you can feel the pressure as the engine spins over)/ It refuses to start. Even on starter fluid. EXCEPT... If I hold my hand over the intake, it has twice popped off like it wants to start, but that is it. I have no clue what else I could even try! I am hoping someone will have that Ah Ha! moment...
  10. Recently bought a yamaha beartracker and found that it was more powerfull than another beartracker i already owned so decided to swap carb from one i bought which was an original mikuni carb to other one which has a cheep chineese one in it but it did not like it at all and was bogging under load at full throttle ( leaning out) so just changed it back to original chineese one and it was happy again. Just tought it was strange that 2 identical bikes did not like each others carbs. It also was nothing to do with retricted fuel on one bike as there is plenty of flow on both bikes. Anybody any ideas?
  11. What’s the Best Top End Kit for a Bear Tracker?
  12. Does anyone have any details on how to take the side cover off to replace the timing chain on a bear tracker.?
  13. This morning I was pulling a small trailer to move some dirt, (knocking off some high spots and filling in some low spots,) carrying around 200 lbs of dirt each load. I was using first gear only, and only hauling it about 100 feet. Twice the transmission appeared to try to slip out of forward and into reverse. There was a scary amount of gear chatter and I immediately braked and let off the throttle. I pushed the forward/reverse lever back into forward and was able to continue on but on the very next load it did the exact same thing and I was again able to get it going by pushing the lever forward. After that I was able to continue hauling dirt for the next 2 hours with no problems. But the fact that it happened and the gear noise that came with it is worriesome and was hoping someone might know what happened, what caused it, and how to fix the problem and/or avoid it in the future. Thanks.
  14. Hey guys. I have a Bear Tracker 250. When I got it, the seller and the title that he gave me, shows it to be a 1999 model from the Yamaha dealer that he bought it from brand new. Recently I decided that my rectifier is bad - not charging. For some reason, I looked up the VIN# on the bottom side of the frame. Completely different VIN# from the title, but this VIN shows it to be a 2002! don't have any idea what the deal is, but.... is there anyway that I can tell the difference between the 1999 and the 2002? My rectifier is on top of the tool box. The manuals for it covers 199? thru 200?. Thanks for any advice.
  15. I just replaced the voltage rectifier on a 2001 Yamaha Bear Tracker. I replaced the original rectifier with the same model. I noticed it was very hot - 180 degrees F. It that normal? It was idling for about 10 minutes and charging to 14+ volts when I first noticed. Any thoughts? TIA
  16. Ok customer brought me a 2000 Yamaha 250 idles great and will run wide open but when you take off from a idle it tries to die and sometimes will die said took it to a mechanic he put a different carburetor on same thing took to another mechanic swapped carburetor again same thing so he brought it to me i went through all 3 carburetors cleaning, adjusting same problem i checked compression only had 90psi so i put new rings, piston, and jug on now have 155psi with same problem any ideas?z
  17. Ok so I have this bear tracker it sat outside for around 2yrs I finally had the time to get on it and the battery was dead i bought a new one put it in and i have nothing like none of my electronics work (gear lights, ignition, rear lights, front lights ,ECT.) help please lol
  18. Have a 2002 Yamaha Bear tracker 250, everything was fine then one day just lost power. Battery is fine, have 12.53 volts coming out, but I have no lights no start no anything. Looking for a wiring diagram
  19. So i have an old yamaha bear tracker that was given to me from an old farmer I know. I decided to refurbished it and fix all the quick fixes on it. I am pretty sure that it is either a 1999 or 2000 based upon the original wiring harness. Little did i know when I bought a new to me wiring harness from ebay that it was from a 2003 or 2004. My question to everyone is do I need to have all the stop switch assemblies hooked up? I think there are three on the 03/04 models and only one on the 1999 to 2000. Any help I can get for this would be great. I haven't run it yet due to the motor and crankcase is in two totes.
  20. Hi Guys, I'm a newbie but pretty handy with a DMM (controls technician). I have been fighting a junker quad i picked up as a project bike, was assured it would run if I replaced the battery and cleaned the carb. I replaced the battery, rebuilt the carb with a OEM kit. FIxed all my switches and foul played circuitry from the last guy.... So I could get it to start long enough to test the quad, it seems okay from a trans/engine point. However I couldn't get the carb adjusted to idle to save my life with the idle air screw or the thumb screw on the card for the slide. I took it to a friend who is much more familiar with yamaha and quads and he double checked my carb rebuild all was fine, he adjusted the float to make the fuel not overfill which i missed. He pulled the air intake, got it started and couldn't get it to idle with or without air filter. We started looking at the spark plug (new) and he tested it with a spark plug clamp meter, tested good, pulled it and grounded and it had spark but he felt it was weak. I order a working used oem coil to try the easy things first. When I ohm out the coil on the quad with my Fluke i'm seeing .4 ohms on primary (ground lug to male connector) and 18K ohms on secondary (inside boot to ground lug). Seems like this forum is full of bear trackers so I'm hoping someone has some ideas to help me figure where to go with this. His thought was he know I ave fuel and he knows I have air, spark would be next. I have spark but possibly weak. Thanks
  21. Hey y'all. I have a Yamaha ymf 250 BearTracker. I got this thing for free from people whose son tore it to hell. So it wasn't in great shape to begin with. i.e. no indicator lights (neutral light for instance), no ignition switch or key( wires were twisted together to make it run), get the picture yet? So when it ran it ran rough and I got it running for a year or two, just something fun for the kids to ride on with me on gravels. Now just randomly, the start button stopped working so I had to jump the solenoid, then put a temp start switch in. Kill switch would still work. However, the thing has no spark what-so-ever. I've check continuity through the start button and it shows the contact is working, ohmed out the stator, everything is in spec, the reg/rec tested fine as well. I've replaced the solenoid on the off chance it could've been bad and the cdi unit as well, along the the little solenoid relay unit. I'm still getting no spark. The spark plugs is new as well and the coils to the plug have been tested and are good. I've tested and trouble shooted everything I can on this quad and no luck. I watched countless YouTube "no spark" situation videos and it's not helped. Does anyone have any tips or tricks I could try? Would really appreciate some input on this. Thanks!
  22. Have an Bear Tracker 250. Dont have the manual or any literature to help with. Anyhow, starts with pull start in gear, and electric starter doesnt work. Also, neutral light doesnt come on. Where should I begin?? Need some direction on troubleshooting all this. Thanks a million.
  23. Trying to replace the carburetor on my 2003 Bear Tracker 250. Two brand new carbs in a row from different suppliers. Both leak fuel out over flow and intake as soon as I turn the gas on. Any ideas. Am I doing something wrong?
  24. I have a 1999 250 Yamaha bear tracker was told it needed a coil to run got into it to day found out that the kill switch was wired together then I found were they put a new cdi on it they cut all the plugs off the stator wires and the cdi wires I found bits and pieces of wireing diagrams blue pick up wire to red and white green wire to white and green wire rolled it over Had a test light on the coil wire it showed there was juice going to it but no spark on the plug and the coil is a brand new one put it on before trying to test the spark did I miss something or have something hooked up wrong already have plans on a new cdi and stator and pick up coil before I go that far like to hear it run. Thank you for the help in advance
