Yamaha Big Bear 350 carb problem

Recommended Posts

got a big bear I'm working on for a guy and it was flooding gas out into the air box, but still running.  I pulled the carb and its beat up just like his other bike I worked on for him (the bayou 220).  Its a weird carb tho:  the throttle comes in at two locations.  it has a plunger and a butterfly.  Is this necessary and could I just switch to a butterfly carb?  The problem with it is it has a broken float fork (the metal piece that holds the float pivot in place.  I'm assuming it is causing the flooding.  also the rest of the carb is well worn out and most of the screws are stripped telling me that it has been fiddled with too much by someone who didnt know what they were doing.  Also, the oil temp light is turns when key is turned and then goes off after a second- dont know if thats supposed to happen or not.

You were right in getting a new carb.  If it's the same style as oem, the one cable operates the throttle valve/butterfly and the other cable is the choke/enrichener.

Oil temp light is supposed to do that.  I guess just to show you it's working...????

I was thinking of the later model Big Bears with a vacuum slide carb.  The early models did indeed have a dual cable.  One operated the butterfly and the other lifted the slide.  The choke is a manual, plunger type.  If I remember right, you adjust both cables so the butterfly and slide start to open at the same time.

new carb in, bike runs, but really rich (doesnt need or want choke cold and bogs if you goose the throttle)  I'm not sure how to adjust these types of carbs yet so any help would be great.  @wanrep, This replacement carb has one cable to it and that operated both slide and butterfly.  It has an adjustment for the slide (so you can have the slide down more or less than the butterfly open.  I just removed the second cable in the box where the throttle splits.  I will try to upload some pics later-  main issue is its starving for air (air filter is dirty in places like it got into some oil, but not bad)  I will try to run it without the filter on and see if it makes any or much difference.

Also, the clutch is too tight making it hard to shift.  I have tried adjusting it out as far as it will go (with the adjuster on the side of the clutch cover), but it still lurches forward when put in gear and doesnt want to disengage when you let off the throttle for shifting.

I figured out how to adjust the needle and adjusted it down (leaner), and it doesnt change the way it runs except that now it backfires too.  I'm thinking the issue isnt carb related?  I checked the timing- good, it has a new spark plug in it, brand new carb, maybe valve clearance?  I will check compression.  Anyone know what the clearance spec is for this bike?

Are you sure the gaskets are correct? Did you pressure test the motor?

So let’s back up here and recap for a second.

1. It’s a Yamaha big bear with a dual actuator carburetor.

2. You added a cheap aftermarket carburetor AND eliminated the secondary throttle cable at the splitter.

3. Did all of this without checking compression and valve adjustments first?

@JacobSlabach you should know by now  that the work you did was completely backwards!

Basics first!  After that then the technical stuff. And furthermore you put a cheap aftermarket carb on a bike that will not run properly without the oem carb!

You were better off finding a used oem carb and rebuilding it and putting it on the bike.

Sorry if it sounds a little harsh but the only reason I’m saying this is because your smarter then that!

yea I should have checked compression and valve clearance.  all the issues screamed carb to me so thats why I jumped to the carb.  the airbox had gas in it (carb flooding) and I took the carb bowl off and saw that one of the float forks was broken off.  so it did need a carb.  the owner is cheap like me (lol) and doesnt want to spend money on oem parts, hence the aftermarket carb.  I had already fixed his bayou with an aftermarket carb and it worked a lot better than with the oem.  and the aftermarket carbs on my polaris and bayou (sold) work perfectly.

I hear you but a float comes with the rebuild kit for $60 bucks.  No modifying of throttle cables needed and the valve adjustment and compression test costs nothing.   Unless the compression comes back low after the valve adjustment! Just saying you have to think before you attack.  Saves more money, time and frustration.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

      Hey I have a 1997 big bear 350 4x4
I replaced the shifter shaft and the shift arm linkage and the rod when I installed them all I was unaware that you had to line the dot on the shifter shaft with the gap on the linkage arm gap put it all back  together and rode it I can't get it to shift in the right gears  I can move the shift cam by hand and goes in different gears but with the shifter shaft in it riding I can't put it in R or N
Anyone know how to line up the shifter shaft and the shift cam s

Hi guys. I have a problem where the quad will start and run well for about 5 minutes and then it dies. On inspection the airbox has oil in it (quite a lot). The oil is pumping through the cylinder head breather hose. This problem first happened suddenly. I have since done the top end including, piston, gaskets, rings and valves. I have also done the carb (not that I thought that this was the problem). The compression seems normal. The only thing that I can think of, is that I did not grind the valves well enough. Anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? Any other thoughts?

I WANTED TO UPGRADE THE CARBURATOR ON MY 1992 BIG BEAR 350, SO I ORDERED A NEW CARB FROM EBAY.  ACCORDING TO THE WRITE-UP IT WAS A GOOD FIT FOR BIG BEARS FROM 1988 TO 1996.  WHEN I REMOVED MY ORIGINAL CARB I NOTICED THAT IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE NEW CARB MY CARB HAD TWO THROTTLE  CABLES THE NEW CARB ONLY HAD ONE CABLE.  HOW CAN I MAKE THIS CARB WORK ON MY TWO CABLE THROTTLE?

2022 Sector 550, 414 miles on it and the gas gauge reads empty.  I topped off the gas and it didn't change.
There is no fuse that I could find.  No access at the gauge cluster.
Wiring on the top of the tank looks good, properly connected.
Could the sending unit in the tank be stuck or broken?
Has anybody removed the tank lid?  Any tricks?
      Any other ideas?
      Thanks for any help,
      Clyde
