Hello. I’m in the market for a new quad. Update from a 400ex. I’m looking at 2 in particular. A 2004 predator Troy lee edition all stock and in really clean shape for 1700. Or a 2008 mxr 450 with the ktm engine. Not as clean but newer. For 2000.
I’m torn. Any with experience with either of these mind giving me some input?
Thanks in advance.

What is your style of riding and do you have money to fix it when it breaks. Not saying you don’t. But some machines are hella expensive just for parts.

Thank you for the reply :)  I’m 45. I like to ride like I’m 25. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t lol. I live in Massachusetts so not much riding around here. I have a few trails out my back yard but a couple times a year we go to Jericho mountain New Hampshire where there are some pits and a lot of fire road type trails. Of course money is an issue. We have 4 kids. I had a 2008 400ex all stock but wasn’t enough. Then I was thinking getting another that was bored out or buying one and having it bored out and swapping the cam and missing that. But then looked at the price to do that and it’s cheaper to just buy a bigger atv. I was torn between these and a few Raptor’s.
still winter here so plenty or time, but now is a great time to buy.
i know you can’t beat the reliability and low maintenance of an air cooled 4 stroke. That makes the 400ex a thought. Man I just made this decision even harder. lol

I  can't be a lot of help  either . .I ride  an  old  1991 Honda Fourtrax 300FW   4x4  quad  with winch added .. I  usually run  tail end  to  the  ones I ride with  because some of them  are   only  2 wheel drive and no winches .. It's no racing machine ,  but  let's face it ,  you  can  kill yourself  just  as easily   at  40-45 Mph tops  as you  can  at  70. I'm  76  and still  ride  like  I'm  25  on it. sometimes it takes me  longer to recover than  it  did  when  I was 25 though. There's not  many  places around  here  you  can  run machines  flat out  so   I've never felt hindered  by the lower top end. That's the main  question to  ask when  choosing  a ride . What  am  I  really going to  be doing with it the  most, and how  much  power and speed do  I really need ? I'm  also  partial to the  Japanese  machines  and A  Kymco (  Korean made)  machine  one of my friends ride  has also been  a great  machine for him.. I'm more a fan  of the  clutch  and gears  machines rather than the CV ones with the  belt  drive ..  Those machines  often  have a problem  with belt  slippage  after  a run  in deeper  water that  can get  in .  They  don't  slip  long once  out of the water  and the slippage quickly  heats the  belt  and clutches to  dry them  out  , but it's there  and can be a real  pain  in a wet and muddy  ride .

As the title says, I've got a crankcase full of fuel / oil to deal with and figure I'll just start from the top and move through the system.  Going to start with a rebuild of the petcock and then the carb if the problem isn't fixed with the petcock rebuild.  I figure I'll go with a Moose kit unless others with experience recommend another brand (All Balls, etc.)
      Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Howdy ya'll. I am working ona 2000 Yamaha Breeze 125. It was in rought shape when I received it and I am working through issues as they pop up. The quad had been sitting for years. I was able to get her running again, but I need your help with the following issue:
I don't trust the transmission yet and I don't want to make problems any worse. So, I haven't pushed things hard at all. Low rpms, less than 5mph in reverse.

      Nuetral: Runs as expected
Reverse: She seems to be driving fine at slow speeds. Going into reverse at idle is fine, coming out of reverse back into neutral won't work (the shifter is just stuck). As soon as I turn off the quad, I am able to shift around without any issue.
Forward: It slips. It seems to only transfer power to the wheels on a smooth surface and going slightly downhill. When shifting into forward at idle, there is a clacking sounds during the transition. Shifting back to nuetral works just fine.

Other Notable Symptoms: There was old oil in the vbelt and when I was tuning the carb, it starting blowing out of the CVT cooling vent at the front of the quad. Made quite a mess. There is positive crankcase pressure due to piston blowby, that I have not decided whether or not I am going to fix (customer budget dependant).  Since the oil was old, much darker than the new oil that is in the crankcase, I am thinking it seeped past a bad seal while it was sitting for years. The oil that was in it when I first got it had gas in it.

Thoughts: I am thinking maybe there is an issue with the clutch. I worry about the old oil intermingling with the dry centrifugal clutch. I was thinking my next step would be to take the cover off of the clutch and inspect it.

Let me know what you all think. Any advice and ideas is greatly appreciated. This is only the 3rd quad I have worked on and I have a lot to learn.

Hi guys, I have a 2004 big bear 400. Last winter while plowing the driveway, I heard a loud pop from the left side of the engine. It continued to run as I looked for leaky fluid, but then died shortly after backing it up and won’t start now. The oil light comes on when I try to start it, no noise or anything else.
No blown fuses that I can find.

      Problem number 1,
2000 Polaris Xplorer 400.  No start, has spark. Has fuel ,found Low Compression less than 60 psi.  What to do next?? Going crazy here.
      Problem number 2.
1994 polaris Sportsman 400 starter won't engage.  Button on left side with  light switch seems to be almost stuck in, weak spring behind button?

      Any help would be nice.
Thanks Chris in West Central Minnesota
