 I own a 2007 Polaris Sportsman EFI X2 model and have for the past months been experiencing loads of issues. Basically the Sportsman will only start if the throttle lever is pushed and will not remain on idle. This situation has persisted for months now and I have replaced the following parts:

Sparking Plug
Fuel Injector
Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter
Fuel Valve
Fuel lines
Power Control Module

The last part replaced was the Power Control Module and the Sportsman was tested and worked fine on a couple of occasions which were days apart so much so that some weeks later I took the Sportsman for an extensive ride and it worked perfectly. This was three weeks ago and today I tried to start the ATV it worked fine a few minutes and decided to switch it off so that I could continue with some prep work. A few minutes later tried to start it up again but noticed that it would only start if the throttle lever was pushed and once I removed my finger from the throttle lever the engine would not stay in idle and would simply shut down. Several attempts were made to start this and also tried to re-adjust the setting by turning the built in wheel like mechanism in the throttle cable but it was to no avail.

The above have been repeating itself on an off basis. Each time a part is replaced the ATV would work and then all of a sudden will not keep its idle. At this stage I cannot think of any other solution other than possibly some sensors which might have an intermitting fault but I cannot really say.

Would greatly appreciate any assistance.

here some thing you can check, i dont know if this model have a '' idle air control valve '' but this thing gums up over times, clean it or replace it ( if you have it on this engine), next you can check or replace throttle position sensor, some time this (potentiometer) have a tiny hole in a trace somewhere between 1% and 10% and what is meaning to pcm is'' i have lost signal, a can't do anything without signal''. why this tiny hole? overtime the engine vibration use the carbon trace and make this sensor defect.

this suggestion is made by logic and please, i am open to learn ! thnks!!

the best thing to do is call a friend with an oscilloscope or take yours to back probe this sensor to show the signal in real time, here you can see if you lost your signal instantaneity within 0 to 5vdc.

Hi Qcm. No mention of the trouble light coming on.. The trouble light should come on if the TPS has a too high or too low reading, and it should set a code of course. Also, I'd expect the engine to stumble if the TPS had a fault, but not perhaps die completely and instantly as I think(from the description), that this is doing.

Fuel pressure or that throttle cable switch seem like more likely things to me. It would be good to know what engine we are talking about..  haha. The eight hundred engine might have different software I think, in which the throttle switch might not be a suspect.. That switch does cause problems though, and it and low fuel pressure both don't set the light.

      Well while I was waiting for new parts for the choke, I decided to adjust the clutch. When I removed the lock nut, I found the guy I bought it from or someone else had stripped the threads on the adjustment rod. I couldn’t get the adjustment rod to turn without putting a pair of channel locks on the screw driver, this was telling me something was wrong. So now the rod pushes in and out and spins freely too freely. So guess I’ll have to take the clutch housing off to see what’s going on and replace the adjustment rod, it’s threads are beyond repair, and there is something going on with the adjustment rod. If there’s another way please let me know. The further I go the worse it gets. Thanks for any help.

      I put a new carb on my trx500fe which I have done before on other models, but this foreman was a real pain, takes forever to get to the carb. Anyway I got the new one installed . I also changed the choke cable while I had it this far. When I turned the gas back gas started running into the air filter box. I did have trouble with the choke cable, it didn’t seem long enough to run where the old one did and the elbow that came with the new carb had more of a 90 on the angle. It didn’t feel like it was binding but I don’t know if the valve was seated on the valve seat. The choke pushed in smooth but who knows what happened in side the valve body. I don’t know if this could be the problem or not I hadn’t run the it just turned the gas back on. Appreciate any help, hint, hint Mech and GW or anybody else. Deer season is over in a little over a week. My power chair won’t make it down those muddy roads. Thanks again.

      So.. It has now become cranky about changing from "drive" to "reverse". Sometimes it's seamless as it's always been, other times it just goes "click, click....click, click " when going from reverse to forward, or from forward to reverse..  Then it gives up and just stops at neutral.  Only thing that seems to help is to give it a bit of a bump / wiggle with my own weight. Any ideas as to what to check? It's low miules / hours .. Dealership maintained..
