i just got a 2002 400ex and..................

when i try to start it, it tries to start and stops tries to start and stops tries to start and stops over and over, like it has the hiccups, but wont start and run. the carb is clean and it's getting gas to the engine, the spark plug is sparking a blue spark when i hold the plug to the frame. ive put a new timing chain and stock cam shaft in it, and set the timing, and it has a new piston. anybody know the problem??

:aargh::aargh::aargh::aargh::aargh::aargh::aargh:

thanks

The compression release is on the cam, and it sounds like it isn't working. It should bump a valve open as the starter turns the engine over to release some of the compression in the cylinder. If it isn't working, the starter will have a hard time turning the motor over and it will make bad noises when it is trying to start.

That sounds very similar to what my friends 450R was doing when he broke his decompression pin in his cam. It would turn over, but it would kind of "hiccup" and sounded like it was kicking back and stopped. It did not sound pretty when he tried to start it, so we just started taking it apart and found the broken pin. Since we were already in there, he ordered the new decompression cam and pin along with a stage 1 Hotcam. Is your machine still in the shop? If so, any word from them? Are you completely sure you had the timing chain on right?, the marks on the cam sprocket line up and you are sure the crank is at TDC when you lined them up?

Take it back and take it somewhere else, do not give them a dime, because they are incompetent. They should have this fixed by now. The only thing that makes any sense to me is the decompression mechanism. If it isn't working at all, it will not release compression and the motor will have a hard time turning over. More importantly, if it doesn't stop working like it is supposed to when the motor starts, it would be just like a stuck valve. Since they were suspecting a stuck valve, maybe they need to take a look at the decompression mechanisme again.

Yes, 3 weeeks is ridiculous, they are supposed to be professionals. It should have been fairly obvious if the cam was the problem. Make sure they don't sell you more than you need. If the cam is bad, then replace just the cam, I would suggest upgrading to a stage 1 hotcam if it needs to be replaced. If it is just part of the decomression mechansism that is not working properly, don't let them try and sell you a whole camshaft assembly with it. It may just be the spring for the decompression cam that sits on the actual camshaft. Ask to see the defective part, or parts before you authorize these morons to do anything. I still think it may be in your best interest to take it elsewhere, if it took them this long to find the problem, do you trust them to be able to fix it properly? What ever you do, I hope you get your quad back and running soon.

Got $5 that says it's a problem with the compression release. Would have suggested that earlier, but I did not catch this thread until the day that Bansheeboy posted that he had already sent it to the shop.

You are welcome, we are here to help. I believe someone owes me $5, and I think that it is Greenfield Motorsports. Glad to hear that you have finally gotten it figured out, I hope you are riding it again sooner than later. BTW, if those guys need any future help diagnosing problems, refer them to Quadcrazy.com

well i FINALLY got my quad back BUT........ theres still a problem... it will start and run and rev but it's acting like its being choked, ive cleaned ALL of the carbraters gas and air passages/ports and i cleaned the old air filter but it did not help. it wont idle unless you are giving it some throttle and then it's semi smooth idle when it dose idle. i drilled the pilot jet out because it was very clogged but i did not see much if any brass shavings come out so i dont see that being a problem. as far as the main jet im not sure if its right on where it needs to be set, when i took it out to clean it, i had moved the adjusting nut on the main jet. i put the main jet back in the way tight and it stops, then i tightened the nut up until it's tight so i dont know if thats where it needs to be.

THANKS AGAIN

JEREMY

The main jet should me screwed in until it is snug, so it sounds like you have it right. I would first try adjusting the pilot screw, it should be on the underside of the carb, in front of the float bowl. Start by turning it all the way in and then back it out 2 turns. See how it works and try adjusting it back and forth to see if there is any improvement. You will also want to make sure the float bowl vent line is not clogged. The tube for it comes right out of the bottom of the float bowl, make sure you can blow air through this line.

Oil is getting in the air box from crankcase vent tube, I put the two hoses that go to the air box together then something started to smoke on the front of the engine. There is a filter? In the line I blew that out.

      Hey everybody,

My proficiency is with Hondas and Yamahas make me see RED!

This bike is my brother in law's, it has 1199 miles on it and went from running great to dead with no start. Every once and a while it will start and sputter for 2 seconds. It is extremely sporadic when it fires but never runs for longer than 3 seconds.

      Here is where we sit:
      Brand New Fully Charged battery
Carb was cleaned with air hose and carb cleaner then into the ultrasonic cleaner with Aircraft aluminum cleaner
New Shindy Carb kit (made in Japan version)
Cleaned out petcock and gas tank
      New 93 Non Ethanol Gas
      New Spark Plug

It gets a spark through the spark test light every time
      Bluish white spark
When holding the spark plug 1/4" - 3/8" away from head it will jump and spark to the head
      Good Compression

      Here are the readings:

Pickup Coil 519 Ohms (range 459-561)
Charging Coil 266 Ohms (range 270-330)
      Lighting Coil 0.700 (range 0.702-0.858)
Spark plug Cap 10.58 Ohms (10kohms
Ignition Coil Primary Coil 0.5 ohms (range 0.18-0.28 ohms)
Ignition Coil Secondary Coil 8.20 kOhms (range 6.32-9.48 kOhms)

Would y'all think stator and pick up coil, rectifier or CDI are the culprit?

having an issue with the unit when running under a load up a hill or in high gear, seems like the belt is slipping, there is a clapping sound coming from the primary clutch like it releases and snaps back in. i don't think I should have a noise like that. this is a friends unit and he has already replaced the primary twice with the same result.
not sure where to look next

      Hi everyone.
Let me explain the thread title.
My husband and I are very active in the nudist community, and we have stayed at many and most of the mainstream nudist and clothing optional campgrounds in the USA. We are now approaching our retirement and would like to start a podcast to share those off the road / backwoods / little known camping areas where nudity is allowed. We have purchased a 5th wheel camping trailer with a rear garage for the ATV and now need some good reports on the one to buy.
We are most interested in a side by side unit but would love to get your thoughts.
Feel free to stop by and say Hi and ask anything you would like to better understand what we are looking for in an offroad unit.
Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you.
