My best guess tells me that the fuel pump was put there for a reason. I don't know much about these vacuum operated pumps on 4 strokes. I suspect that they may be more of a fuel valve than an actual pump. If that is the case, I don't see why the machine wouldn't run off of the gravity fed fuel from the tank. I would just give it a try and see if it works, I would put a shutoff valve in the line though. I know some two stroke engines, use vacuum operated fuel pumps, but they use the alternating vacuum state/ pressure state of the crackcase to actually pump fuel.
