I used to hunt, but now, my Raptor takes most/all of my money. I hunted geese, and deer, and squirrels. In our gunsafe, there is a Ruger 10/22 with a 50 round clip, Browning Citori, Browning Gold, Remington 30-06, TC Omega, a couple hi-power pellet guns, Winchester .22, Winchester 12ga. and a Remington 20ga.

Nice job, they look good.

Thank you!  Both took several years to finish but that was working on and off.  I'd get to a stuck screw or pin and try soaking it for several weeks.  Most times I had to just drill them out and retap the threads.

Interested to know what steps you took to remove the rust and refinish the metal. Any rust removal chemical products or just careful sanding? I take it the metal wasn't too pitted?

That is a good question.  The Garands were soaked in cosmoline so they were easy to clean.  The stocks on a 1791 Mauser i totally stripped and refinished.  However, i did not like the finished stock as it looked too clean.  I cleaned up my Carcano 6.5 mm stock to look like an Armory finish.

I have an old revolver I am working on now to re blue or brown finish.  I'll post a picture.  I use penetrating oil and wrap it in a cloth to let penetrating oil to soak in over night.

The action on the Colt .38 Detective special (top) is in very good. I have cleaned it up as it had lots of finish rust.  I am going to smooth out some more pitting then Cold Blue it.  I carry it a lot.

The bottom revolver is a Hopkins & Allen .32 cal DA circa 1912.  The action is still tight but it's a wall hanger.  Polish and Blue...

OK i forgot to mention I use my Dremel tool with a buffing or a coarse buff brush.  Herewith is a picture of the same revolver after using the Dremel tool.

I am going to consult with my gunsmith about what finish would be best.

Pretty much the only thing reused of the original guns was the receivers.  I used parts kits to fill in all of the missing or damaged pieces.  I build an electrolysis tank to de rust everything.  The receivers were horribly pitted and required many hours of filing, and sanding and I still could get some of them out.  They look great from 10 feet away lol...  Once I got the receivers where I wanted them, I cold blued them.  I have more space now so I may get into hot bluing and redo everything.

Have you ever reblued a spot where the gun had just a smaller than a match head rust.   I have a pistol that has a rust spot .  I keep it oiled of course.  it's one of my favorites and keep it at my bed so I handle it a lot.

so what bluing or  additional finishing should i do to the Hopkins revolver

Birchwood Casey has a nice cold bluing solution.  They also have a brown/bluing solution that usually comes out sort of a plum color.  Experiment with it and with different bluing solutions.  Cold bluing can be removed fairly easy.  The most important part of bluing is to make sure ALL oil is removed from the part you are going to blue.  The oil from your skin can even impact it.

The one with a rust spot could go a couple of ways.  If it's a collectable I might leave it alone and just do what you are doing.  If not collectable, I'd try using a little 0000 steel wool with gun oil making sure not to harm the bluing around it.  You could wrap the steel wool around a small pencil eraser to lightly rub the spot.  Sometimes it's best to leave it alone.  The cold bluing typically doesn't match the factory finish so the touch up would stand out.

I love My FEG B9R 380 is under my pillow has a pin point rust. in one place.  I should carry My Ruger ss 101 357.  but my colt 38 detective special fits my hand.

I should try the cod bluing on it.colt.thumb.jpg.136be376725cb3362e58f97c3d39cbb2.jpg

It looks like the Colt has been reblued at some point as the bluing looks like it goes into the pits and scratches.  If it was hot blued, leave it as it would be a better finish.

Yes there is minimal pitting that i am reducing by buffing.  Herewith you can see the one side that is pitted whereas the remining 90 % of the Colt is very good .

I will look at "Rust Bluing"

It's my favorite CC. ...I like Wad Cutter ammo.

However, my S&W M&P Bodyguard 380 is easy to hide even in shorts.  LOL

Cool to see some of the different choices of what folks choose- I have a few of the similar things in the photos above but will be a bit cautious as to how many details I want to share for now.

Recently acquired a Taurus FX .22 for some rodent population control, and I'm pretty happy with that one.

Hello

I read in this topic, some people enjoy WWII rifles. A few month ago, my gunsmith show me a K31, which is a linear rifle of those times. It is a swissmade gun. It look like a quality gun, and has a reputation of précision. I didn't have the opportunity to test it. Anyone knows those rifle?

Hi guys, I have a 2004 big bear 400. Last winter while plowing the driveway, I heard a loud pop from the left side of the engine. It continued to run as I looked for leaky fluid, but then died shortly after backing it up and won’t start now. The oil light comes on when I try to start it, no noise or anything else.
No blown fuses that I can find.
