2003 Kawasaki Bayou 250 beater??

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

this is my first post here and i have a very important question that maybe someone will tell me what they would do. My friend has a 2003 kawasaki bayou 250 that he has been wanting to sell. It needs new brakes all around and new back tires. Now heres the thing he is convinced that it has piston knock. However, from what ive found its very unusual that a bayou this new has piston problems or needs a rebuild. Ive read that sometimes the timing chain may just be slightly loose. Because he is convince it has major problems he wants to sell it to me for $200 bucks. What are the chances of me coming out ahead on this and what are the chances of me losing my ass?

thanks

ps im going to look at it tomorrow

I would say at 200 bucks you will probably come out ahead and have a decent ride out of it in the end. Good luck.

I would definitely buy it for $200. I had a 2002 bayou 220, fun machine. For that price, you can't go wrong.

* Added year to thread title.

Thanks for all your help guys. I went to ride it today an look at it. Its solid for $200. I mean the thing has some small problems worn brake pads, worn tires, slight piston knock. Honestly though i was expecting to go look at it and it sound like it was about to blow up. I honestly can barely hear the knock and if it gets too bad ill fix it. Ill never really lose money on it and thats what i wanted. I have always ridden a bayou 350 4x4 and Im amazed at how much more fun the 250 is. Its just so light and agile compared to the 350 beast. I bought it and am picking it up tomorrow along with some brake pads and some new grips.

Ya you can part it out if needed and make more than $200. I miss my old bayou 250.

We have a 2wd Bear Tracker that was flooded out by a tornado and I've since been trying to get it right. I've cleared the water out of the tank and now has fresh fuel, and I've opened the carb so many times I could do it blind folded under 10min. She'll fire up as soon as you turn the key and hit the button, even on a cold start, and idles perfectly. But the second you hit the gas it bogs down and dies. I had it running GREAT for about 10-15min once and suddenly ran like shit and limped it back to the house. I've barely got it to move under its own power since. I'm at a loss at this point. Does ANYONE know of something stupid I could've missed? The carb does have a fresh rebuilt kit that I put on about a month before the flood. It was not started until it dried, I cleared the tank and opened the carb the first time. I guess I'm just gonna pull the entire thing apart again and go from there. Maybe another rebuild kit? I'm gonna swear this thing is clean though.
      Thanks for any ideas

So we have a 2000 BearTracker 250cc. We got hit by a tornado and it got flooded out. Water was well over the handle bars and it actually moved almost 40 yards by the water. Anyway, I've pulled the carb and drained the tank. New fuel and a "clean" carb. It fires right up first crank like it used to but bogs down after you try and give it any gas. Think it could still be a carb issue? Carb had a fresh rebuild in April and might have 10-12 hours on it since. After we got it out, It was never started until I took the carb off and cleaned it along with draining the tank. Carb has now been off twice with no differences. Any other ideas?
also the water seems to never end in the exhaust. I've gotten out as much as I could but it's still steaming quite a bit like there's more in there. Could this be the problem? I've never had an ATV get flooded out like this one before. Any help or other ideas would be great. Thanks yal.

Bought a 01 bear tracker and a trailer from a local guy last week. I rebuilt the carb 2 days ago and ran damn near perfect for 2 hours. Parked it and came back the next day. It suddenly won't hold an idle at all and pops when I'm going downhill or at a slow speed. Almost like I'm dragging the whole power train with the weight of the ATV. It still has decent power (80-90% maybe as it is now) but I can't figure out why it's popping and won't hold an idle suddenly. even with messing with the idle screw next to the bowl on the exterior of the carb. No changes. . ANY ideas would be great. I'm far from a carb king, but I've never had this issue before. The fuel was bought 2 days ago and it has a brand new intake manifold as of yesterday when I rebuilt the carb (whole rebuild kit). I sprayed around the carb and did not find any leaks.

       Thanks y'all.
