New Yamaha owner saying hello!

Well I am all about restoring and fixing up old neglected beaters. This will be my first ATV (usually do scooters). Bought an 87 Yamaha Moto4 225 with some transmission issues. Hope to learn from the forum here on how to dissect this little beast and get it performing in tip top shape. Also plan on doing a cosmetic overhaul to it along the way.

Hey folks. Been having forum issues of late and can't access any pages or I can just get one page into the site and it locks up.

Anyway, an update of sorts. I was able to start the bike on the weekend. Hadn't heard it running before I bought it. The noise that the PO said was an issue was noticeable as soon as I started up the bike. With in running (in neutral) I could hear a clattery sounding gear like noise. I shut the bike off right away so as not to cause any more possible damage.

I took apart the middle gear (no issues) and also the transmission on the left side of the motor. All was clean, not a metal filing or nothing. No noticeable gear chunks or bits.

I am now thinking that it must be in the clutch (maybe a spring in the primary) so I'll dig into that side of the engine later this weekend. Am I correct in stating that the secondary clutch wouldn't be spinning or engaged at idle?

Fun to see inside these beasts. Much different than my vintage scooters!

OK....another update. Torn apart all the clutch components. No dice there either. Now have the tranny apart, the clutch apart and the engine out on the floor. Looks like I have to go in deep:aargh:

From what I can tell on parts fiches, its the balancer drive gear. When I turn the drive axle, it catches here and there, skips, jamps, etc. So with the tranny all out, the clutch all out, only makes sense that it would be in the worst possible spot to get at. I guess this means splitting the case. Perhaps I'll move this thread.

Hello folks. Long overdue update. I didn't want to bother splitting the case so the bike sat torn apart in my shop all summer. Found somebody looking for a parts bike so I sold it.

Feeling like I never got to scratch that quad itch, I found a 1999 kodiak 400 and I'll be bringing it home in a few days. It's ready to ride. Just a few minor things need fixing in the future.

What's the best kids atv out there? I've seen everything from the ones released by the major manufacturers to all those knock offs. Kawasaki has a KFX 50 that is pretty nice for under $1800...

having an issue with the unit when running under a load up a hill or in high gear, seems like the belt is slipping, there is a clapping sound coming from the primary clutch like it releases and snaps back in. i don't think I should have a noise like that. this is a friends unit and he has already replaced the primary twice with the same result.
not sure where to look next

Anyone purchase or check out Rockymtnatv lately? Well I was just browsing over there and they have a pretty cool section called Ten Dollars Or Less. Some interesting things to check out if you are in the market.

      Hey I have a 1997 big bear 350 4x4
I replaced the shifter shaft and the shift arm linkage and the rod when I installed them all I was unaware that you had to line the dot on the shifter shaft with the gap on the linkage arm gap put it all back  together and rode it I can't get it to shift in the right gears  I can move the shift cam by hand and goes in different gears but with the shifter shaft in it riding I can't put it in R or N
Anyone know how to line up the shifter shaft and the shift cam s

      Hi guys
My 87 Bear 350 won't start and could use a hand.
Turn key on and Oil light turns on and then slowly fades out. (I think this is key to this) No start, not even a tick.
      battery and connections good
A Solenoid post jump turns it over
Neutral Safety Switch wire attached and seems good
It has not had a wire/switch on Rear Brake Pedal ever since I had it.
Any thoughts on some other things to troubleshoot this??
