  1. Yes the head of the starter will be exposed then the pull starter is removed
  2. A gummed up carb does sound the most plausable it may sound like its getting too much gas when in fact its getting to little. Also the machine needs good air flow to run properly change the air filter. Do a compression check to check valve seat also. More tech tips at atvwheelin.com in the tech tips.
  3. I have had the same issue and what happens is the starter gets dirt and moisture in it. Remove the pull starter assembly then expose the starter bendix (head of starter) spray it out good with carb cleaner and oil the front bushing and reassemble.atvwheelin.com More tech ideas here!
