Hi, I’m a 16 year old that is wanting to get more into vehicle and mechanic repair. My dad has an old ‘96 Timberwolf that he doesn’t remember running since I was born. I want to get it running again as a memory for him and to help us be able to hunt together, and of course so I can learn how engines work more than the little information I know now. I’ve pulled the carburetor and gas tank off of it, and the carburetor is getting cleaned by a friend. I can post photos of the condition it’s in later, I’m just curious where I should start in my journey to get it running again. The power switch is broken off of the handlebar, so I am looking into fixing it, along with the pull cord. I’m afraid the engine is seized up, and I’m curious to hear any input anyone has. Thank you all.

Sounds like a nice project! Once you get that carb back you want to be able to crank the engine, ideally with the starter. So you’ll need to fix/replace the switch that’s broken. How’s the battery? May need a new one if it’s the original. Once you get it to crank, you can go from there.

@Ajmboy Hopefully, if all goes as planned I will have the carb back around New Year, cleaned and ready to use. I’ll have to replace the starter switch, which I’ve researched and found a good price on. I’m not sure how old the battery is, but I can check tomorrow, I’ll probably replace it just to be sure I have a good one. I have one question though. I tried to initially start it with the pull cord, but when I tried the cord went slack and won’t pull back into the spool. I tried to take the screw/bolts out of the cover to remove it and try to fix the cord, but they were previously stripped. How should I go about pulling the cover off in order to fix the cord? Should I just cut a slit in it with a dremel, remove the screw, and find replacements? Thank you for your help.

Hey @Chris Chitwood welcome to Quadcrazy.
Nice atv you got there. If the screws or bolts are exposed enough on the pull starter you might be able to grab them with a visegrip pliers.  But before you do that see if you can spray the inside with WD-40 utilizing the small red tube on the tip to get inside the pull starter and spray it good and let it sit.
If the recoil spring is broke then it will need to be replaced but it just may be rusted inside.

@Frank Angerano thank you for your advice. I sprayed the WD-40 like you said earlier in the day, and I just tried to get the cord to retract. I haven’t had any luck. I tried to use vice grips on the screws, but there isn’t enough room between the cover and the screw to do any work. I also tried to slit the head of the screw and use a screwdriver to remove it, but the metal is too soft and I still can’t get it loose. I am questioning whether I should cut the head off of the screw and use vice grips after removing to cover to remove the rest of the screw. I would appreciate any other ideas you have.

Here are pictures of two of the screws. All of them are stripped, except for the one I was lucky enough to remove. Hopefully, you can see the slot in the picture. I tried removing it with a screwdriver, but the metal was too soft. Hopefully y’all have better ideas than I have had so far. Thank you.

Sorry for taking so long to respond, I just got back in town from a vacation. I have tried both a small and large set of vice grips, but I haven’t had any luck on the screws that I can reach with them. The metal is so soft that it just peels away or bends under the pressure of the vice grips.

Hi, I just bought a used 1990 warrior and the rear is sagging low like it has a lowering kit but I’m not sure, does anyone know what it could be?

I have a 2000 Honda trx90 I got from a buddy for free he said it needed a carb so I put his old carb back on it to try to get something out of it and it does not have any Spark. I already replaced the ignition coil I don't know much about four wheelers but I am a technician so I do know my way around a motor any electrical help would be wonderful or specs I don't have the best digital multimeter either.

Hi, i'm looking for some help and advice with my arctic cat quad, its the first of the arctic cat quads as far as i know, manufactured in 1996 the bearcat 454. i have owned the quad for about 10 years now but just recently it has developed a problem with reverse gear, reverse wont engage any more like it used to 😕 the cable and handle is free but there is no movement the gearbox end, can anyone give me a heads up of what is involved to fix this? 🤔
If anyone has a service/repair manual available for it as well that would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

The title pretty much explains it all. When using the starter I can hear it spinning but not engaging the engine. The wheels also do not engage with the wheels when the clutch is out. The motor has compression if that helps.
I am new to engine work and repair and I bought this quad with the idea of fixing it up (not knowing the full extent of the damage). The previous owner said it ran but sat for a year (I don’t believe that for a second after opening it up) and had bought a few new plugs and a starter motor, none of which fixed the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have attached a few pics of what I think could be wrong.

Hello everyone, i have 2000 Polaris Trail Blazer 300 I’ve been stumped on for weeks. I’m having a lot of issues starting the quad. I cleaned the carb spotless because I thought it was a carb issue and bought a new fuel line because it wasn’t getting fuel. The carb gets fuel perfectly fine now but it won’t start. The spark plug I a little worn out but it’s good enough for just one start. The only time it does “start” is when I spray starter fluid into the carb. But it never stays on. It’ll start for a bout a second then just die out immediately even if you’re giving it some throttle and the choke is on. I have no clue what I should do. If you need more information, have questions, or have any slight idea what the issue would be and how I could resolve it. Please reply ASAP. Thank you.

Unfortunately it looks like I have some people in my new neighborhood paying a little too much attention to my auto and for the first time I'm feeling a need to add some security system(s) to old yeller.  I think just a basic remote arm system would do, not interested at all in remote start or unlock.  I'm not familiar with modern alarm systems, but here's what I 'think' I need...
      - Door switches for all 5 doors (rear hatch).  Probably a PITA to install but that's only an initial idea.
      - 'Bump' alarm (not sure what it would be called) for if a window breaks or if something is jarred
      - Geo-location function like a low track or something similar
Additionally I'd like to install possibly 2 start kill switches.  I'm not sure where inline these are normally installed but my impression is that directly in line with the key ignition switch would be common.  But then what if someone jumps the starter with a screwdriver...would this type of switch work in that instance?  So that leads me to the idea of a second ignition kill switch which would either be wired between the battery and starter motor, or between the starter motor and ground.
      And last...security lugs.
So am I over thinking this here?  What's your recommendation for what I really need and maybe a good but economic alarm system that can get this done?

I’m just wondering what year bike i got? it seems the vin has been rubbed off i got it from a auction here in Australia engine starts but seems has a dirty carb wont idle well
and also has a problem I put it in gear and makes a grinding noise but does not move it the neutral light goes out but then when I change gear it grinds more in the higher gears as well I’m guessing the differential is stuffed so wanting to buy new part for it will start the pull down next week

this is the first bike I have worked on used to dealing with cars
