00 trx90 pull start with new coil no spark

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 Honda trx90 I got from a buddy for free he said it needed a carb so I put his old carb back on it to try to get something out of it and it does not have any Spark. I already replaced the ignition coil I don't know much about four wheelers but I am a technician so I do know my way around a motor any electrical help would be wonderful or specs I don't have the best digital multimeter either.

Start with the basic stuff, make sure there is not a safety tear away plug on the rear of the machine or on the handle bars.  Check the kill switch and wiggle it as well, maybe locate the wires for the kill switch and unplug them.  Do a continuity test on them and flip the kill switch for open and closed signal.
After that your going to have to check/test the stator coil.  Unfortunately the cdi cant really be tested so you may have spring for a cdi if the atv is wort it.
But get a tester and pull the stator plug off and start by testing the three phases coming from the coil in the engine.  Phase to phase on ohms setting. Write the numbers down so you can compare them to the manual later.   The numbers between the phases should all be relatively close.  Then test each phase of the stator to ground. You should get an open reading. Any continuity between any phase and ground is an automatic fail on the stator. Start there and see what you get.

@Frank Angerano what do you mean phase to phase in electrical really isn't my forte but I do have a cheap  meter

The phases are the three coils that pick up the magnetic fields as the motor spins to generate electricity to run the engine, recharge the battery, and all the other electrical stuff. Here's an easy video on testing that stuff. A cheap meter is fine it should be able to test for ohms in this range.

So the stator has three wires. Each of them are called a phase.  Test each wire (phase) as explained in the previous post.
Most stators are three phase.  If it has two wires it's single phase.  Nothing different other then testing two instead of three wires.

@Frank Angerano so i got it running the N safety switch was bad so i grounded it out an fired up. A couple days later it had no spark at all i know the motor pretty much runs off the blue an yellow wire an the red an black wire. I believe the exciter coil maybe bad or the stator but the only wires coming from the case are the black an red an blue an yellow ( not eorried about 4th gear limiter) what reading should i get from those wire volts an ohms. Honestly the more detailed the better

Quad starts fine and revs fine in my back yard. On a test ride it falters badly. No power. I have cleaned and rebuilt the carb, cleaned the fuel tank, installed new fuel filter, changed fuel line and cleaned the air filter. Any help would be appreciated.

posted a while back - it was running at one point - I have all the plastic shroud off - it's down to frame and engine now
-fuel pump: when line from petcock is attached, no fuel comes out other side to carb; the line to the carb is open (can blow through it); I thought when I cranked engine that the pump would spit out fuel on other side but it does not; I removed fuel pump and opened it up - diaphragm looks good - but internal areas had lotsa calcification build up - I cleaned this out and dried it good - the clear plastic pieces (?diaphragms) aren't broken - the spring w/ steel ball on end moves freely; am putting it back on tomorrow; but can anyone answer about the pump? isn't it supposed to pump fuel through it... to other side... to carb? puzzling
-along with fuel pump: I replaced petcock 3 weeks ago (gas tank had rusty fuel in bottom - cleaned it out prior to new petcock); when I turn petcock arrow NOT to on or reserve, fuel comes out of line; when I turn it to on or reserve, fuel doesn't come out; puzzling
-I don't know what's on back of fuel pump - it's a valve that has a hose coming out of it - looks like it goes to engine/carb - I haven't traced this out yet - what is it?
-can squirt gas on air filter and engine will run for 2-3 seconds then stop - fuel in top of carb (under diaphragm) does same
-it likely needs carb rebuild - will get to this - but something isn't allowing fuel to get from fuel pump to carb
-I THINK it has a mikuni model x carb - diaphragm is ID 26mm  OD 68mm - hard to find inexpensive diaphragm, I guess because it's a model x
-last thing - I replaced solenoid due to old one clicking; I HAVE to be charging the battery or it won't start/turn over - battery just goes dead; but if charging, it'll turn over nicely; i'm guessing it's a bad battery
-any help appreciated - I've never owned an ATV before - inherited this beast from grandparent in-law

So I’m 14 years old right now..... I’m a pretty good rider for my age, I have a 98’ 300ex that I’m tryna sell. I’m thinking of a 400ex or should I skip the 400 and just go to a 450r or something along those lines?

Hi, I just bought a used 1990 warrior and the rear is sagging low like it has a lowering kit but I’m not sure, does anyone know what it could be?

Hey y'all. I have a Yamaha ymf 250 BearTracker. I got this thing for free from people whose son tore it to hell. So it wasn't in great shape to begin with. i.e. no indicator lights (neutral light for instance), no ignition switch or key( wires were twisted together to make it run), get the picture yet?
So when it ran it ran rough and I got it running for a year or two, just something fun for the kids to ride on with me on gravels.
Now just randomly, the start button stopped working so I had to jump the solenoid, then put a temp start switch in. Kill switch would still work.
However, the thing has no spark what-so-ever. I've check continuity through the start button and it shows the contact is working, ohmed out the stator, everything is in spec, the reg/rec tested fine as well. I've replaced the solenoid on the off chance it could've been bad and the cdi unit as well, along the the little solenoid relay unit. I'm still getting no spark. The spark plugs is new as well and the coils to the plug have been tested and are good. I've tested and trouble shooted everything I can on this quad and no luck. I watched countless YouTube "no spark" situation videos and it's not helped. Does anyone have any tips or tricks I could try? Would really appreciate some input on this. Thanks!
