Everyone talks about Honda atv’s. What are the other reliable atv makes? Are there specific models to target? I’m currently looking at a 96 Kawasaki bayou 300 4x4.

in my experience having polaris sportman 335 and a trail boss 330, ihave had no issues in the past 20 years with them regular maintance all thev needed, however purchasing a artic cat prowler is a complete can of worms, dealer network is pretty poor help as well

Depends if you want sport/performance, recreational riding, or work-horse, and the local terrain makes a difference when choosing. I think most of the jap bikes are very reliable.

Back in '22, the wife was looking at getting a brand new ATV. We were at a Dealership that sold both Polaris, and Honda, and the salesman kept pushing the Polaris ( which he had a LOT of stock ), over the Honda, which he said we would have to wait for. We ( I ), have a 1996 Honda Foreman 400..... I asked her how many times the Honda had broken down, or been in the shop. The answer was "Never"..  Which was basically true, as it had only been in the Dealership for the first couple of services when purchased. Ten seconds of silence, and then she said, "I'll wait for the Honda."

Yup, 20 years of neglect, with only occasional maintenance, ( It's been treated WAY better since it became my problem), and it never left anyone who used it on the side of the trail. One set of tires, and a few batteries, other than that, nada.

I've got a '97 Suzuki King Quad, and my neighbour has a Polaris.. Can't say the same for either of those.

The Honda is the workhorse

I think you're right Chuckster.. Honda are super simple and super reliable.. If it wasn't for the really steep land i live on, (which the suzuki super low is really handy for), I'd have a honda,.

A couple of thoughts on that...

My old Honda's first gear, is called ( in the manual ), "Super Low".. you don't use it unless it's uphill with a load.  For normal use, it's only the top 4 gears. ( 2nd through 5th ). The wife's 2021 had a dual range on it, low or regular. And you van pick between 2 WD, 4 WD, and 4 WD, with the front diff locked.. Also in dual range, so effectively a ten forward speed transmission. It also gives you your choice of auto shift, or manual shift. To tell the truth, the auto shift is amazing! Just when you think that it should be in  another gear, it changes as smooth as if you'd ridden it forever.

The Suzuki King Quad , ( mine is a '97 ), works out to be ( I think), around 16 different drive train configurations / ratios. Way over kill! but cool as hell if you want to yank on something big, without abusing the clutch.

Yeah.. I put heavy loads on front and rear, and can still lower myself down, or back up, on hills to steep to trust your footing on. That's one of those old fifteen speeds with three reverses..  haha.. It is a bit excessive but I have really steep land and it's brilliant.. And I've tried other quads here as I worked on them.. Hard to beat the creep along speed.

The dairy farmers though on rolling land, and all the guys at the beaches, they all love hondas..

You guys know a lot about Hondas, i have an older one 87 great machine and am looking to get a newer Honda something newer early to mid 2000s, what is the difference between the Rancher and the Foreman and why would i pick one over the other.

Posted

haha.. I'm not a mechanic that remembers model specific details..

I keep finding that a name in one year, or market, can mean something different elsewhere or in another year.

You know what I'd say though.. manual transmission, suspension/drive as simple as your riding will tolerate, carby... japanese.

Red is good.

Good call, the Red ones always run better. Worked on both also very rarely never major problems so i also never paid attention to the difference between the models.

There are several good models to choose from, I PREFER HONDAS OR YAMAHAS.  DON'T GET TOO FANCY WITH ALL THE OPTIONS THAT YOU CAN GET ON AN ATV.  BUY A PLAIN JANE.  BUY A USED MODEL, BUY An EARLY 2000 OR A LATE 1990S MODEL.  THEY ARE EASY TO REPAIR AND KEEP RUNNING.  KEEP IT SIMPLE!

1st problem, Does anyone know where I can find a stock carb for my Timberwolf, I have tried two different aftermarket carbs and they both suck. The machine runs great until it gets good and warm, then it keeps stalling unless I feather the throttle. it will even stall while I'm trying to go from 1st to reverse or vise versa. I took it to a buddy of mine who is a bike mechanic for years, and he told me try to find a factory carb. When I look online from dealers it says "NOT AVAILABLE" anyone have any suggestions ?

2nd, The small tab on the rear axle for towing is to short for even pulling my small yard trailer, I can't even turn a little bit and hit hits. I tried making an extension which worked great as far as length, but it bends the tab and then the extension drags the ground. I have an idea of what to do to fix it, but wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and see how you solved it.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

I like to ride in wooded and grassy areas. It takes my mind off the everyday routines and helps me deal with my father's cancer. Also gives me a reason to get involved with forums like this one.

I have a 1990 Bayou 220 that runs pretty well for it's age--needs a new muffler, but sounds tough.    Have had to start with a pull cord since I got it, and recently started troubleshooting the start button.  Finding a lot of information on this issue in the forum, but haven't been able to chase it down yet.  Got a new battery, new starter solenoid, and going to replace the starter relay this week, but not convinced that's going to do the trick, since I can't get the neutral light on when turning the key on.  I can start it by jumping the solenoid, but the 2 black wires to the relay do not activate the starter.  Bad ground or a short somewhere?  Is there a good way to just test the ground?

I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues.
I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance
