2003 Kodiak 450 Stalling at idle

I've got a low-mileage Kodiak - it's been mine since new and while I maintain it reasonably well, I've done zero work on it from an adjustment standpoint. It generally runs fine, but increasingly I find that it stalls out at idle (only). I've countered this by cracking the choke a tiny bit, but I know that's a band-aid fix.

My best guess is that I need to do a mixture adjustment of some sort. Is there one for idle only? Alternatively, I could probably fix it by upping the idle just a bit, but I don't think that's the right way.

I'm mechanically inclined and work on all my own cars, but new to bikes. i.e. I'll learn fast, but may not have a clue on some of the bike-specific stuff. In fact, all of my cars are fuel-injected, so aside from a snow blower engine, I haven't worked on a carb'd vehicle since forever.

Feel free to link me somewhere if this is already covered somewhere pretty well.

Thanks...

Look in your owners manual for the idle adjustment. Bump it up a hair and try a hotter plug if you want.

I used to own an 04 Kodiak 450, loved it. I had a similar issue that ended up getting worse. If it's been yours since new, with low milegae, my guess is that it sits for a while at times.

What might be happening is, the float needle is corroded, causing the float not to rise up to where it should be, starving it with gas at low idle.

Common problem on those carbs. I've attached a parts diagram for you from Yamaha. You can check this site for part #'s: My Yamaha Prompt - Parts Catalog

You can take it out and check it for corrossion. Make sure the float moves freely.

Thanks for the specific feedback. Indeed it does sit for a while sometimes, so what you indicate is certainly a possibility. I presume it's pin #13 in the diagram that you're referring to, yes?

I guess I'll be figuring out how to take the carb apart next.

You should be able to disconnect the carb and rotate it enough to take off the plate with screws 20 and 26. #13 you should check, but just check the overall movement of the float. It should be 100% free floating up and down.

From Arkansas. Just bought a 2012 Gator 850i RSX because I could not pass up the price. BUT it has an idle problem. So, to be honest, I joined just to get a service manual. I have a choice: 1)Buy a hard copy: ~$100; 2)Buy a CD ~$35.00; Get a direct download for free posting 10 times; or get a download for $29.00 (subscription). Haven't decided what to do yet.

Howdy y'all, I'm trying to fix a neighbors 2015 Brute Force 300. Came in with hard to start and won't idle except on choke issue. I pulled the carb and found the pilot jet as well as the emulsion tube partially clogged. Cleaned up everything, put it back together, still having issues...  It will start right up on choke and will also start off choke if you give it just a touch of throttle but it absolutely will not idle unless it's choked just a touch. Also, excuse my ignorance but I'm assuming the "dial" thingy attached to the carb that turns in and out is for setting idle??

I have been exploring all the options available, so many, its hard to choose. I have kind of narrowed it down to the Honda Pilot, Subaru Outback, and Kind of looking at the Outlander, although its a little small,  the new one is nice looking. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or gripes with any of these rides. I have driven Jeeps for the past 25  years and they have been great, but their price point has gotten to high. Expieriences good or bad would be helpful. Thanks!

Just thought I'd start a new thread for newbies to the site!
If you're new here, tell us who you are, where you're from and what you ride!!!
Lets get to know each other a little better shall we?
I'm not new to the site, obviously, but...
I'm Kristin from Denver!!! I ride a 2008 Yamaha Rhino. She's my muddy baby!!!!!! Several aftermarket parts on her. She's good to me! We try and ride every weekend. This weekend we're off to MOAB! :woot:

      Hey all,
I need some input on a problem I'm having with my Kodiak 400 that keeps fouling plugs. First off, I've done a lot of work to this thing, most of it all in good fun. Brake work, cv joints, u joints, carb kit, checked valve lash, compression good, changed all fluids, etc... My problem is it keeps fouling plugs very quickly. I can put a new (manual recommended plug) in and it starts right up, runs great, idles great, picks up good. Doesn't stutter at all. I ride it for 1/2 a mile, it cuts off and won't start back up. I let it sit overnight thinking maybe it got to hot. Try to start it the next day, nothing. Put a new plug in, fires right up, runs great for another 1/2 mile or so, dead. The plugs come out and look carbon fouled with dry black soot on them. I don't know if this is a fuel/air mixture problem or a ignition problem. A couple of things that I noticed is I never need to pull the choke out to start it. Also, when it starts it automatically idles high like an automatic choke would do, then it comes back down to a good idle. Also I noticed that the air/fuel mixture needle valve screw does nothing when I adjust it in or out. I can screw it all the way closed and the motor still runs and idles good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm almost leaning to a ignition breaking down the plugs??
      Thanks!
