Move a trailer with an ATV?

Hi, I’m new to the forum. I have a large trailer, about 7500 lbs loaded, that I need to move around in my driveway. I was planning to buy a motorized trailer dolly, but it occurred to me that perhaps and ATV could do it, and then I could not only move the trailer but also have the ATV for the fun of it!

I’m wondering if anyone knows if an ATV can move a trailer this size? The tongue weight is about 750 lbs, and I’d only be moving it very slowly in a small space on almost level concrete and gravel.

welcome to the forums no atv out their can pull 7500 pounds and even if u were to get it moving the brakes couldnt with stand the pressure probably.... but if u really want something that can pull for something u really dont want to pull out the truck for go with the 07 diesel arctic cat not the fastest or really a mud worthy atv but those things were built for hauling... and the tongue wait at 750 pounds u would probably bend the reciever on the atv or shoot the s**t out of the shocks and the whole rear set up

Yeah, that's allot of weight for an atv. I think the top I have seen is 1500lbs towing capacity.

Hmmmm,,,,,In my mind I am thinking of like a 16' Tandom axle Flat Bed Rated Rated at 7500 pounds......That being the Case.....If I were to own a Quad and wanted to pull that Trailer around....I would...

Most 1/2 ton pickups are barely rated to pull 7,000 lbs. Highest factory listed pulling ability is 1500 lbs for an ATV.

Atvs are pretty handy for moving empty trailers or maybe with some brush on them, but nothing that heavy. 

It would be cool to watch though!

Hello, in the picture, a powered trailer for two wheel tractor, the system is also used in Scandinavie for forestry with agri-tractors. I have seen on a Uk site powered trailer for Atv with 2 hydraulics engines driving wheels via rollers, they say it's a 2000kg load. I have idea to create a powered trailer that allow me 6x6 when situation become difficult.

Pulling that weight on level concrete would be no problem but no ATV could support that tongue weight.  You could build a dolly to support the trailer tongue  but then  you would need a rigid connection from the ATV to that dolly to  move the trailer.  It could be done but  a  motorized trailer dolly  is the best way to go.

The Uk site of motorized trailer for atv show a trailer with 2axle in the middle, one of them is hydraulic drived, maybe it is the reason why they put 2000kg on the trailer, perhaps it don't make too much weight on the tongue. The system i have imagined is a disconectable powered axle with a little dumper upside, when connected my quad will be changed in 6x6 quad, and 2x4 or 4x4 the rest of the time. M'y question is how to create the power of the axle, "a pony motor", an electric motor, an hydrostatic system. I think i can put on and off the axle drive with a system like automatic brake on car trailer. When the tongue is tense, the axle is drived, and when the tongue in compression, the drive is off. Anyone had seen this type of system yet?

This is the trailer i have looked for. It don't like serious in m'y opinion, i look like a toy, but the concept seam smart for me.

Hard to believe a Kymco is pulling all that weight, i guess the powered trailer wheels are doing it, how do you plan to get power to the trailer wheels.

as long as he is pulling the 7500 pound trailer on level paved ground an ATV would do it easily.  The problem  is  the tongue weight.. One thing thnat might work is trig up a mount for a swiveling  wheel mounted on the tongue low enough to allow the  hitch to settle on the hitch ball while the swiveling tire bears  most of the tongue weight.  After all,  a man can push  a vehicle on a level  hard surface.

fosco is asking about moving that trailer  around in the small space of his paved driveway,  not pulling it down a road or on a trail..  The only thing that would stop him from doing that is the tongue weight  which no   ATV  would support

So, it's my answers that "divert" the topic.... My first  question was how to tow a trailer without putting to much weight on the atv. M'y second was how to "convey" the torque to the ground in difficult condition.

To answer Gwbarm, creating a powered trailer is a long term project for me, i am reflecting about differents answer, electric engine, ad a PTO to the atv, why not convert a tiller tractor in powered trailer... I don't know... I think the powered trailer must work when taking off the trailer or at low speed only. On the vidéo i put on the site, the power trailer has his own engine.
